Vince Wilfork asks to be released

Which football team would pay $8 million to this guy:

1.) Going to be 33 years old next season

2.) Coming off a major achilles injury

3.) played poorly last year when he played

4.) Overweight

5.) Family history of diabetes

No one....that's who. Time to move on.....it's the right thing to do for the team.

It comes off as a bit childish from Vince? Kinda like i'll break up with them before they break up with me, so it looks like I was the person who ended it.

They asked you to restructure, which by all means is fair. You said 'No', which you are entitled to do. The ball is in the Patriots court right now, either they stick with your salary for the season or they cut you.

Asking them to release you because the asked you to restructure is silly.

If they release him now, as he requests, he can get a fair price on the market while it's still early and teams are still in need of players they can spend good money on. If the Pats do this, it would be out of respect.

If the Pats chose to play hardball, they won't release him until the last possible minute, before teams have to get under the cap prior to the start of the season this fall, to prevent him from going to a contender or staying in the division.

yeah, I'm sure his decision to asked to be released had nothing to do with the Pats wanting him to take significant pay cut.

Yea, but as business with the Patriots as with a lot of posters in this forum, Vince isn't worth 11.5 millions anymore.

The Patriots probably wanted to extend Vince a couple of years and then guarantee his 2014 base salary and spread it out over 3 years to lessen the 2014 cap hit. The Patriots were probably not willing to pay 8 million per year base salary in 2015 and 2016 and were not willing to offer any additional
guaranteed money.

he would be pretty scary in the middle of Richardson and Wilkerson with the jets, I wish him the best of luck he was a great patriot

It's sad but Wilfork has always been about money. You can't fault a person for that, but you can't fault me for feeling less sympathy either.

talk about deflating a balloon. Forget the cap charge...I don't see anyone available who can replace him. Yeah, he's coming off an injury and is on the wrong side of 30 but still, what he brings is a hard commodity to find. The Pats need better DTs and this severely weakens an already weak position. D-line more important than WR right now.

Agree that D-Line is more important than receiver. Disagree that what Wilfork brings (or is likely to bring) at his age coming off an Achilles is difficult to replace. Easy enough to find stout bodies that can hold up in the run game but don't offer much pass rush. Hell, look at Siliga. The problem was the scrubs they had to plug in at the other DT spot. They can easily upgrade there at the draft and/or in FA.

Sometimes the interests of the team and the player don't align. This is one of those times. Good luck Big Vince.

P.S. I've always got a kick out of when we release or trade players and guys like Seymour or Wilfork would say "This is a business" then get butthurt when they find out the same laws of business apply to them as well. Funny.

What I just dont understand is, I dont see many teams paying him 11.5million$ if he gets released. what he signs with for another team would likely be similar to what the Pats would restructure his contract to.

I love Big vince, and it seems out of character for him to not put the team first over himself and re-structure. I wouldve thought similar to Brady he would be happy they brought in a guy like Revis to improve the secondary.

He wouldn't even be a starter. Damon Harrison played at a ridiculous level last year.

Thinking about it, it's quite disappointing really that he didn't ask BEFORE free agency - the Pats could have got Arthur Jones, Randy Starks or Lamarr Houston if they'd have known in time!

actually, your right...he hasn't officially signed with the Packers. everything seems to indicate that they have been close to a one year deal. Raji seems to be hoping for a little better deal so maybe his ears just perked up today.

The deal is in limbo. He was considering it on the 6th, but he decided to enter free agency and test the water. At this point, they are not close especially after the market showed he is likely to get more than $4 million a year.

I don't think he'll go to Denver, even for spite. Even Elway isn't dumb enough to pay him that when they could spend elsewhere. If we release him, my bet is he goes to some JAG team for a decent pay day and we never hear from him again.

Daniel McCullars remmeber that name :)

GREAT!

Best outcome for both parts. I hope Vince finds another job, even at Jets. I wish him the best.

Now lets sign the beasts.

His article a week or two ago was the set up for this.
