Ed Reed released by Texans ... signs with Jets

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

Belichick should have just put in a claim instead of trying to get cute after the waiver period.

If by trying to get cute, you mean making sound rational business decisions based on a player's future value and not his past performance, and if "should have just put in a claim" was sarcasm, then I would agree with you.

Or maybe Belichick isn't interested in signing him? Or maybe the reports aren't accurate? Or maybe Ed Reed isn't interested in coming to New England? A lot of possibilities exist still and the guy is still a FA, so maybe you shouldn't jump to conclusions at this time...

I don't care about rational business deisions based on a guy we are going to rent for a few months if it doesn"t involve giving up draft picks and only costs the franchise a few million dollars. If it means another super bowl then you have to push the envelope. Belichick should have known rex would get involved.

Ed reed is not the missing link to getting this team a superbowl,
Also we don't exactly have an unlimited amount of money we can just throw at players. this isn't the MLB there is a hard salary cap in the NFL and Ed reed's contract is absurd.

Stop acting like a Jet fan.

According to this article, any team that claims reed would have to pay only a total of 1.6 million - half to reed, half to houston. To me it's not worth not claiming him if that's all that it costs. 1.6 million to shore up your safety spot AND prevent the jets from getting him? Sounds like a good deal.

Ed Reed's options included the Jets (possibly) but not the Patriots, Ravens or Colts. Not sure about Saints. As of late last night.

With a couple of players that need new contracts after this and next year and a salary cap crippled by Hernandez I would say that we need the cap, more than we need a 35 year old safety who is way past his prime(which was amazing.

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

Well now that he hasn't been claimed all he'd cost the Pats at this point is the Vet minimum for the next 7 games plus the playoffs. So the bottom line it would like be, at most around a half million. This issue isn't whether he's affordable its whether he'd be an asset.

I think that even if he's only here for the rest of the month while Gregory is healing, he'd be worth it. He extends the depth chart because now, in certain situations we could us McCourty matched up on key player while Reed tries to play his usual center field.

In small doses his knowledge and still sharp instincts can overcome the step or two he's lost. Where he might become a liability is if you use him full time and/or enough that an opposing team can find him and create a bad match up. However if the Pats are the ones that can dictate the match up or situation where they want him to be, I think he can be a useful player.

The key is fully understanding that the player you are getting is NOT a 9 time all pro. This is a guy who has definite flaws, and is no longer a full time player. But if he can be a situational player getting 20-30 snaps a game in the RIGHT situations, bring him in. His locker room presence alone would be worth the investment

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

According to the waiver process teams with a worse record than us would have to pass him up, that include the Jets, so I have a hard time seeing him end up here.

um, he cleared waivers...he's a UFA at this point

just because they didn't want him at the waiver signing cost, doesn't mean they won't sign him for less now

matt flynn passed through waivers.....GB signed him a week later

Why? Every team in the NFL passed up on picking him up but that doesn't mean teams won't offer him something now (the vet minimum).

It seems fans want him more than the team does.

He cleared waivers yesterday. And there was zero chance anyone would pick him up based on his salary and lack of production this year.

You think he DIDN'T know that? WTF???

Boy you must really think little of him that he'd overlook the obvious.

Remember, with the Jets it's not about building a team; it's about the publicity & attention!

Letting him slip through waivers was a gamble that didn't payoff, if the latest reports of him close to signing with the jets are true. If they did this to save a few measly 1.6 million dollars then I don't know what to think.

I would bet the Jets are the likely landing spot for Reed, but Steinberg is a horrible source.

I don't get it. You have no way of knowing if the Patriots had any interest in signing him so how can you say they did it "to save a few measly 2 million dollars?" What if BB just never wanted him?
