ESPN's Michael Smith: Brady Is Not Clutch

Clutch is a myth

there's career numbers......most guys tend to play to their career numbers over time.....sometimes they play to the good side of those numbers in the "clutch", other times to the low side......over time, they tend to play to those career numbers, though

as players age, those career numbers tend to dip......both in the "clutch" and not......unless you're barry bonds

I don't think that there is ANY question that Brady is no longer the "Mr. Clutch" that he used to be. Back in 01-05, if we were behind with :50 seconds on the clock and Brady and company had the ball....EVERYONE knew Brady was going to march the team down the field and win the game...The guy was just amazing. He is NOT that same guy anymore for whatever reason. I think when you looked at his face in the SB in 07 where they still had some time left....and the PO game against the Jests....and many other games over the past few years where we are trying to come from behind.....he DOESN'T have that old CONFIDENT look on his face anymore. I think Brady is still in the top 3 QB in the league and one of the greatest of all time...just not as clutch as he used to be

Now in using the term "clutch" I am doing so in regards to come back victories at the end of the game.

As for the 07 Super Bowl, go back and look at his bomb to Moss at the end. If Moss extends his arms and goes up for the ball (something he was doing with regularity in 07), he likely makes the catch and the Pats have excellent field position to go for win or tie the game at 17. So, in this case, Brady's "clutchiness" is all on Moss. An example of how the "clutch" thing is, well, complicated.

Absurd.

He scored a TD to go ahead with 1:30 in that Super Bowl.

With no timeouts and 25 seconds left from his own 20, he launched a 60 yard bomb that was right on target.

Gee, he had 25 seconds, and was at his own 20, I wonder why he didn't have a look of confidence??!?!

ABSURD!!!!

to add to this, the truly great players just don't deviate as much from their career numbers when the pressure is on.......there's no doubt some guys grip in key moments and they deviate greatly from their career numbers/averages......the great ones just tend to play the same no matter the situation

brady, imho, tends to fit this category......we're just seeing a longer sample over time now, so he's settling a little bit......

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I thought 'clutch' meant you were trailing with less than 2 minutes on the clock, and you need a TD/FG to win....

Why do you need to be 'clutch' if all you're leading in the game, and all you need to do is milk the clock down?

Clutch to me means performing when you need to. That includes picking up a 1st when up by less than a TD with over 2 mins to go.

Webster made a good play on it; as good as the throw was, Moss wouldn't have had a chance.

I have always wondered about the playcalling on that last drive - not that it's on Brady. But with 3 timeouts, the Giants playing prevent, and only needing a FG, I was very surprised they didn't try to work the middle of the field for a few chunky gains to just try to get into FG range.

Caller wants to trade Brady .

If the link fails just go to weei.com . Some guy called jimmy is totally trashing Brady and is so mean in his remarks . I feel he has personal vendetta against him . It is so sick when your own fans are jealous of their QB that they have to resort to anything to cut him down to satisfy their ego ?

He is called Jimmy from Lowell .
Stay calm. Jimmy will still be in effing Lowell fifty years from now and TB12 will have been in the Hall of Fame for 40 years by then. Not that there's anything wrong with Lowell...

I feel like playcalling is what's wrong when we're on the drive that could put the game away. But I don't get this Brady is not clutch stuff.

Week 1: easy win vs titans
Week 2: Brady puts the team in position to win, Gost misses FG..
Week 3: This one isn't even worth talking about because of the refs
Week 4: Destroyed the bills and came back from down 21-7.
Week 5: Brady put the game away with a first down to Welker.
Week 6: Brady couldn't close the game

So it's really 1 loss where he couldn't put the game away, come on now.

Totally agree. Would take a homer to disagree. I don't know what the problem is... but he just isn't himself in the 4th quarter anymore.

Some of it definitely has to do with timid play-calling as well... but Tom is given quite a bit of freedom with that, so he shoulders at least some blame on that front too.

A couple thoughts come to mind.

1. The Cleveland Browns are tops in the league in this stat. They blow fewer 4th qtr. leads than any other team.

2. The Patriots defense does blow a lot of 4th qtr. leads.

The Bills have yet to blow a fourth quarter lead.

Unless you count the Cardinals game.... Which they still won, so I don't.

Yeah....but the Tom Brady of 2001-2005 would have moved the team down the field in position for a FG there!!!! Alright....just playing....I get your point....;)

Nope, that was at ~2:45.

It is abundantly obvious Bradys best days are behind him now. HOF career but he's not gonna get any better with age. He isn't wine or cheese. He's still better than most playing now though......

Time to start thinking about a new QB and a new coach, methinks in the next couple of years. Nothing lasts forever.

Wrong. The Yets' inability to get to the SB has been going on since January of 1969 and will last forever. They won't play in another one until every person currently living on earth is in an urn on a fireplace mantle.

Brady was brilliant on that last drive of regulation vs the jets.

This thread is fail.

Bwahahaha....

Poor Michael Smith; so much egg on his face....

he's lucky it's only egg...he should be eating five finger food to the face and mouth...repeatedly...punk

If you'll pardon me for saying so, SUCK IT, Mr. Smith. That is all.
