One thing that I have noticed over the years is that the leagues best pass rushers look for advantages outside of their talent. They want to give offensive lineman very little to grab on to. Justin Tuck even went so far as to change the design of his facemask multiple times to ensure that offensive lineman couldn't grab at that either

another thing I've noticed is that the shoulder pads on some of the best pass rushers are small. their shoulder pads don't hang off the outside of their shoulders, making it difficult for Olineman to hold them on the outside of their shoulder pads.

Chandler had a little "Hang Time" on the outside his shoulder pads in that thursday night game. he was held a few times also.

My question is, do you think chandler should wear smaller pads during the season?

It might be a small advantage but it's an advantage nonetheless.

Tuck looks like he should be playing hockey not football with that mask.

Good observation. Makes sense to me.

He doesn't need smaller pads to dominate :)

It's a good point and when I saw your thread title on the main page I immediately thought of Tuck, Osi, et al. I could also argue that if Jones turns into one of those guys skill wise, the larger pads might help draw penalties. Of course if high school refs continue to officiate in season, I think he should switch.

If it will provide a competitive advantage BB and P Johnson will point it out IMO.

I hadn't thought about that. Good point. I think it would help his pash rush but I'm not sure about the downside. Would it lead an increase in injuries to the shoulders? Would it somehow hurt his run stopping ability?

That's a great observation, I hadn't noticed that but I agree completely, the player and the pads are connected so when you touch the pads you touch the player.

Less is more.

Also, credit to Tuck as well, I think his modified facemask makes a ton of sense, even if he does look like a Hockey player.

Tuck's helmet is friggin' absurd. He just uses it to intimidate opponents, like he's Jason or something.

I can't recall an instance where It's been a disadvantage. It also looks like smaller pads might provide a smoother range of motion for someone with arms like his.

1 - Intimidation is a good thing.

2 - That mask will make it difficult to know what his eyes are looking at.

3 - The mask will prevent one from getting poked in the eye.

4 - It makes it more difficult for an opponent to manipulate your helmet using the face-guard.

Great insight, I hope Chandler reads these threads.

The guy is a beast. If he thinks it will help him i'm really not going to doubt him.

Tuck's face mask is going to cause someone to lose a finger, it's freaking ******ed and should be illegal as a health concern.

There are several spots big enough to stick a finger in there and instead of sliding out like on the normal mask they will simply wedge between two chunks of plastic.

While I agree with you, it may be the opposite. The new refs might be inclined to call more phantom holding. In that respect larger pads might actually be an advantage in getting holing calls.

I'd wait several games before making a change based on the officials - even when they settle down they'll evolve.

This and he's going to have a hell of a time looking for a ball at his feet.

Maybe they gave Jones those pads and told him to fill them out. Good observation OP.

Good observation! Hopefully the Pats are aware of it. Some guys, like Jared Allen, don't seem to do it, so maybe it's just a preference thing?

Jones should play in what he finds comfortable.

Never seen a pats player use the small pads. If your teaching them to tackle properly it's foolish to open the up to shoulder injury risk.
