Observations From Being At The Bears Game

Observations from being in my family room watching the Bears Game on HD Plasma.

It looked like a small cloud of dust coming off the carpet as players made moves? Could this be due to the fact the field turf was put in so quickly, and did not get a chance to settle?
Somebody last week that had experience with this kind of surface from playing soccer mentioned annoying small black rubber bits. Looks like there's tons of it down there, as a closeup of one of the field goals (Gostkowski's I think) showed a lot of stuff go up into the air when his foot grazed the ground. Are they part of the process? I thought about the players inhaling that stuff. :( Hopefully, it's been fully checked out by now though.

That rubber is what they topdress the turf with. It provides cushion as well as holding the "grass" fibers up. I believe they used Nike Fill, which is made from recycled sneaker soles, which in this case was (supposed to be) brown to provide a more realistic look. It does settle after awhile. In theory it's been cleaned and screened as part of the manufacturing process so one would hope there's nothing unhealthy about it.

You cannot ignore physics.
All the stands ESPECIALLY the 300s are further from the field than in loud stadia or in old Sully Stadium.
Add that to the typical non-participation from the red seats and the quirky OPEN ends vs CLOSED end stadiums and you have a DESIGN problem for acoustics exacerbated by red seat corporate yuppie scum.
I congratulate the RSCYS for for once geting into Sunday's game.
When I made my first visit to Gillette last year, I could not *believe* how high the 300 sections are. For reference, there's a section in the Oakland Coliseum called Mt. Davis...an addition to the centerfield/sideline seats that includes two levels of luxury boxes and then some serious nosebleed seats. When compared to the highest seats in the rest of the stadium, Mt. Davis is ridiculous as shown at the link below:

The 300 seats at Gillette is Mt. Davis on steroids...both sides of the stadium. I'm surprised those fans can be heard at all.

Chris

Most new stadiums are similar designs (Pitt/Tenn--actually Tenn is identical) yet theyre loud.

Funny you say that, my daughter (9) just asked me why our seats in 315 are so steep! I told her so that they could keep us closer to the field. That was just a guess, but she bought it.

This past Sunday was my first time at Gillette. I've seen the Pats in the Meadowlands and in Philly before, and in old Foxborough as a kid.

I'd read a fair bit about the lack of crowd noise, and though the consensus seems to be that we were louder than usual, where I was sitting (first row of the 300s, but hey, they were free), things still seemed to be pretty quiet.

What was odd, was that I looked around my section, and saw that everybody was on their feat, hollering and stomping, but it still didn't feel that loud to me. I also felt like the seats felt a little more exposed than in the Meadowlands -- I was wondering if the problem with crowd noise is caused in part because the crowd doesn't hear itself as much in Gillette as other stadiums.

Nothing exhorts a crowd to get louder than feeling like it's being loud in the first place.

I have seats in 125 and 315. 315 always seems pretty quiet. There is so much air and nothing to keep the sound in that it just seems to vanish. I find it twice as loud in 125 where the sound really bounces around.

I have no idea if my theory is accurate.

We just suck. ;)

I don't think the season ticket holders that post on here are the problem. Well with the exception of one or two (one guy claims the season was over in March and the other believes that the crowd should only respond to the way the team is playing, because the players don't need a boost from time to time) the problem is the average casual fan that thinks it is hip to go to the game or just simply doesn't get the emotional up or down from the game.

I was at the game in section 329, row 25 out of 26. Up there up there. I thought the crowd was into throughout, although I was so far removed. One thing I did notice was the red seats were full for the first half, then they all went inside due to the "cold." I live in LA and had my 10 year old brother with me up in the jetstream and we were fine. That says a lot about those fans. I guess this is what happens with success.

Thanks, CT.

I sat in 300 something (don't remember) and no one around made a peep and I was constantly recieving dirty looks for yelling. Honestly is soured my entire Gillette experience.

It's nice to know our crowd can be loud when they want to be....I just wish they wanted to be more often.

However, it was ONLY the crowd reaction that told me Gost's second FG was good. Otherwise I would not have thought it went through. I had to hand it to the crowd there....saved me from sweating through the replay, because even the officials seems unsure.

Of course it was hyperbole, but Vinny has a long career of exceptional physical ability dwarfed by horrendous decision making.
Vinny is the epitome of the $1,000,000 arm and 10 cent head.

I can completely understand Vinn y was brought in because even with his flaws, and age, his arm is the best that was on the market. There is no way I will ever believe he was brought in for any contribution to the thining part of the game. It is his major weakness.

By the way, lets hope Brady steers clear of Vinny, because the only advice, experience and knowledge Vinny could offer would be a detriment. I dont want Bradys approach to the QB position to move an iota closer to Vinnys.

All that said, if disaster happens, Vinny is a better option than whatever else we could have as #3, because BB knows him, and will manage the strengths and weaknesses.

Shhhhhhh! You are ruining everyone's conspiracy theories! :D

I've heard from a reliable source named after a six pack of beer that Brady and Vinnie are constantly comparing notes! That's what they do, you know! The third stringer and the franchise QB compare notes on everything around here! ;)

I had no idea but I thought it was good when the refs looked at each other - usually that means neither saw it miss and they're looking to see if the other said "no good".
