Kamerion Wimbley - FA fit for Patriots at OLB ?

Re: Kamerion Wimbley Patriots OLB ?

he got 9 sacks as a 3-4 OLB cause Seymour was in front of him he gets 4 sacks on the pats with the DE's he would have blocking for him

And that's why the Pats #1 need in the draft is actually a stud defensive end and not the 'sexy olb' that most people clamor for.

Re: Kamerion Wimbley Patriots OLB ?

What do you guys think of Mathias Kiwanuka? He is set to become a free agent and the Giants may only offer him a one-year deal. Would you take him, if he checks out medical (he was placed on IR in 2010 with a neck injury)?

I certainly wouldn't be opposed to this, but if Ty Warren and Leigh Bodden come back at close to 100% to where they were and it solidifies an improving secondary with McCourty and the front 3 w/ Wilfork and some good, young prospects don't you think a "sexy" OLB would be able to do very well. The only reason I mention this is because of the success that Clay Matthews had in GB. The Pats and GB both run the 3-4 and have what should be comparable secondaries. GB's front 3 are:
  • Left end Ryan Pickett, 340 pounds.
  • Nose tackle B.J. Raji, 337 pounds.
  • Right end Howard Green, 340 pounds.

What I wasn't sure of is how many sub-packages GB uses compared to NE?

In the sub package, Wimbley moved up to DE, sometimes with his hand on the ground, next to Seymour. I am sure that anyone playing next to Seymour benefits by his presence, but Wimbley does have pass rushing skill. It was not just Seymour's presence that resulted in Wimbley's 9 sacks( or Shaughnessy's 7 for that matter)

Re: Kamerion Wimbley Patriots OLB ?

Ok...... here we go. Let's take a shot with a young kid who has a 17% chance of playing at a recognized higher level in the NFL by league average(this Cousin is your odds)? If you Draft 10 guys, 1.7 will play to a higher level other than a jag, be lost by extended injury that stalls a career, or just were over-valued by those who do such like Gholston, Russell, and some of our picks like Chad Jackson, Lawrence Maroney who were all top 60 type selections. We have nine selections this year. On league average, 2 of those will play at a high level. More will make the Team but certainly replaceable the following season. It takes three years by league average to cultivate those players.

Let's take the 2007 NFL Draft class. Let's use the top 100. 17 are top yield players, one or two more are iffy border line. Some have promising careers that are questionable by injury like Sidney Rice (by the way a FA) or Ross or Posluszny, some are not with their original Teams already and most are serviceable (is that what you want the Pats to Draft? .........or a proven NFL player that can be tweaked to perform even better like a Vrable, Harrison or a Moss and maybe this year Woody ?), roster fillers or just O.K. players........ and many are out of the league after only three years, so....just .....17%!

Our Draft was 58% successful of last years class according to roster which was over triple average. Some are still border line like Deadrick, Price and even Cunningham as to where the go into the next level or just become Jags to bring that number back to earth.

FA's Wimbley or Manny Lawson are two who might be more ready to jump to that next level more readily than any Draft pick. A mix of FA and picks are preferable. It's a bigger crap shoot to Draft. There have been Pats Drafts in the last ten years where you Cousin or I would have been much more correct and opportune in our picks than the Pats F.O. .....who are EXPERTS! For every Thomas (who had at least one decent year), there is a Vrable, Dillon or Harrison. For every Brady there is an O'Connell (third rounder?).

TB is another year older. This is more of a win now season or two, rather than three or four years from now.

I get your point, but A) I still have a decent amount of faith in the Pats to pick the right guy and B) I'm not all that high on Manny Lawson or Wimbley

I don't think anybody is that high on either of them, just looking for a significant upgrade at that spot from the 2010 starters.

The same thing happened here for 8 years.

You still need talent to beat one on one matchups.

For the most part, Wimbley played OLB in the Raiders base 4-3. Seymour played DT. Shaughnessy/Scott played DE on that same side.

Cullen Jenkins starts at DE for the Packers, and is definitely their best lineman after Raji. Green was a rotational guy.

Thanks for an overall good analysis of Wimbley. Doesn't look like as good a fit as it did on the surface; 4-3 LB's don't transfer into BB's system as well as might be hoped. While pass rush is important, it is only 1/3 of the job as far as BB is concerned. When the Pats D was functioning at its best, you didn't know where the rusher was coming from. McGinest was the closest BB ever had to a "dedicated" pass rusher, and his game was much more complete than that. BB's philosophy is much more about pressure and hurries and route disruption and coverage. Sacks are good, but you can't intercept the ball on a sack.

Re: Kamerion Wimbley Patriots OLB ?

Wimbley's confidence was shaken the last couple years in Cleveland playing against Joe Thomas every day and opponents usually focused on shutting him down because he was one of their only weapons. And he isn't very good in coverage.

I wouldn't mind him becoming a Patriot, but he will probably be too expensive in the open market, if he becomes available at all.

I'd rather like the Patriots to go after 49'ers Manny Lawson. He isn't the greatest pass-rusher in the world, but does so many other things very well. He could thrive in BB's defensive schemes.

I've heard Brian Robison of the Vikings thrown around as a good potential FA that we could grab as an OLB, does anyone know much about him?

You should spend less time typing and more time watching football, or being instructed on how to evaluate players

If he is available I say why not, surely our coaching staff can coach him up and get the best out of him, plus we could still draft some young guys to groom.

The Raiders have used their franchise tag on OLB Kamerion Wimbley, two league sources said.

wimbley would be a nice fit for the pats. but id much rather see BB use some of those draft picks at the OLB position. cunningham, banta-cain, and ninkovich arent going to cut it.
