Kamerion Wimbley - FA fit for Patriots at OLB ?

Re: Kamerion Wimbley Patriots OLB ?

I haven't watched him play, so I don't know the answer, but # of sacks doesn't always tell the story of a guy's pass rushing skills. There are 2 possibilities why his sack numbers are down:

1 - for whatever reason he has regressed since his rookie season.

2 - He has been just as good, but his lack of sacks is a reflection of things outside his control - such as poor running defense, QBs getting rid of the ball quicker, him playing more coverage, etc.

I suspect with his old coach being in KC, the Chiefs would be all over him if he was a good fit for this defense.

Option 3, like any young player once you make a splash opposing coaches start paying more attention to you. I haven't watched enough of Wimbley to say that's the case here, but it's possible he started getting more attention in the opponent's gameplan after 11 sacks.

Re: Kamerion Wimbley Patriots OLB ?

Hindsight is 20/20 but it sure would have been nice to get him in here last year.

CLE traded him for a 3rd rounder. Pats traded a 3rd for Burgess in 2009. Maybe BB was a little gun shy.

No knock on Taylor Price but Wimbley would have been an upgrade over anyone who played ROLB. Plus he knew the principals of the defense from RAC and The Rat..

The Raiders kept him at strong side LB and he played very well last year.

As long as the comment about liking Silver and Black isn't all true, there is no reason the Pats shouldn't go after him in 2011 (when the CBA permits)

I liked him coming out of college, however he hasn't had the impact that he hadn't on the college game.

I know sacks are not the only indicator of how good a pass rusher a player is but 35.5 sacks in 78 starts isn't shabby at all. That is 8 sacks a year during the regular season.

That would rank him #1 over any Patriot since 2006.

Re: Kamerion Wimbley Patriots OLB ?

I'd rather draft someone that pick up Wimbley

Ok...... here we go. Let's take a shot with a young kid who has a 17% chance of playing at a recognized higher level in the NFL by league average(this Cousin is your odds)? If you Draft 10 guys, 1.7 will play to a higher level other than a jag, be lost by extended injury that stalls a career, or just were over-valued by those who do such like Gholston, Russell, and some of our picks like Chad Jackson, Lawrence Maroney who were all top 60 type selections. We have nine selections this year. On league average, 2 of those will play at a high level. More will make the Team but certainly replaceable the following season. It takes three years by league average to cultivate those players.

Let's take the 2007 NFL Draft class. Let's use the top 100. 17 are top yield players, one or two more are iffy border line. Some have promising careers that are questionable by injury like Sidney Rice (by the way a FA) or Ross or Posluszny, some are not with their original Teams already and most are serviceable (is that what you want the Pats to Draft? .........or a proven NFL player that can be tweaked to perform even better like a Vrable, Harrison or a Moss and maybe this year Woody ?), roster fillers or just O.K. players........ and many are out of the league after only three years, so....just .....17%!

Our Draft was 58% successful of last years class according to roster which was over triple average. Some are still border line like Deadrick, Price and even Cunningham as to where the go into the next level or just become Jags to bring that number back to earth.

FA's Wimbley or Manny Lawson are two who might be more ready to jump to that next level more readily than any Draft pick. A mix of FA and picks are preferable. It's a bigger crap shoot to Draft. There have been Pats Drafts in the last ten years where you Cousin or I would have been much more correct and opportune in our picks than the Pats F.O. .....who are EXPERTS! For every Thomas (who had at least one decent year), there is a Vrable, Dillon or Harrison. For every Brady there is an O'Connell (third rounder?).

TB is another year older. This is more of a win now season or two, rather than three or four years from now.

I'm still very optimistic that Cuningham can be good, but he could also became the next Chris Singleton too- who had a better rookie year than Cunningham.

Very true. I just thought with his numbers in college he'd be one of the top players. That said, if we could get him for a decent price then I'd be happy with it.

First 5 years of their career:

McGinnest 30.5 sacks
Colvin 28 sacks
Vrabel 10 sacks

Re: Kamerion Wimbley Patriots OLB ?

It's a philosophy. Some people believe that spending big money on a pass rusher is foolish. Some don't. Both sides have plenty of data to support their arguments.

IMO a good pass rusher can thrive in any defense as long as what they require him to do is similar to what made him successful prior to his acquisition.

Lets look at AD. Playing the OLB position at BAL, in 72 starts he had 38 sacks.

As a Pat, in his first 9 games he plays ILB and has .5 sack. In his next 19 games, he recorded 13 sacks.

Same with Colvin. It's understood that 2003 was a lost year, but in about 70 games he had 28.5 sacks. Not that great I would say, but when he was close to 100% in 05 and 06, he had 15.5 sacks)

We can agree that in the long view, both deals backfired somewhat, but the Pats got production. However, when the players were either healthy and put in the right position, they brought pressure to the QB.

So while it cheaper going the way of the draft for rushers, it's less of a sucess rate while FA gives you a higher % of success, its obviously more expensive.

Good post. Nice comparison. If this kids got 35.5 in the same time period, not bad at all.

A 34 OLB is not just a pass rusher. 34 OLBs that make big money can (1) rush the passer (2) set the edge against the run (3) hold their own in zone coverages against WRs.

Re: Kamerion Wimbley Patriots OLB ?

No thanks. Woodley or Hali or bust.

Re: Kamerion Wimbley Patriots OLB ?

I actually watched ALL the Oakland Raider games this year and concentrated on the DE/OLB position(don't ask) and I can tell you one thing. Wimbley can certainly rush the passer. He is very quick. Doesn't have a whole lot of pass rush moves, but can turn the corner and dip down under the tackle and beat him to the qb. That is almost his whole pass rush r'epertoire. Quick off the snap, get the tackles outside shoulder, dip under and he is at the QB. He just relies on his quickness and athleticism. But that is all he needed this past year. He is that quick and athletic. That being said, he is not good at all vs the run. The Raiders run a 4-3 and have a pretty good DL against the run. Houston(DE), Kelly(DT), Seymour(DT) and Shaughnessy(DE) all play the run real well. You would think with that line, no one could run aginst the Raiders. Problem was almost everyone could run against the Raiders. Wimbley and Groves(and other) OLB's would just get washed out or blown away on running plays. McClain MLB started to come on later in the year but the OLB's were just horrible against the run. If the Pats are looking for a one trick pony, Someone who can get after the QB, then Wimbley is certainly one of the ones to look at. He is like a shot coming off the edge. (Trevor Scott from Oakland before he got hurt, was similar but with more moves. Good/Great pass rusher//bad run defender) IMO I think BB wants a more all around player. I think the Pats could use a pass rush specialist but BB doesn't seem to go that route and he has forgotten more about footall today than I will ever know. So I will defer to his judgement.

Re: Kamerion Wimbley Patriots OLB ?

I like Wimbley & Manny Lawson. Lets get it done.

That part is understood.

Guys that get 10+ sacks who are marginal in coverage and setting the edge also make big money.

Yeah... I don't agree that that type of player is worth the money. And if Wimbley is that kind of guy, I don't want him.

Lawson is interesting without a doubt. Also good to very good in coverage as well as quick off the edge. Probably comes much cheaper than Wimbley because he has not had the same sack production.

Re: Kamerion Wimbley Patriots OLB ?

he got 9 sacks as a 3-4 OLB cause Seymour was in front of him he gets 4 sacks on the pats with the DE's he would have blocking for him
