Re: I'm popping the champagne......

I hate the Dolts as much as the next guy................ BUT,

If Peyton ever deserved to put the Peyton-face on, it was today. What a ****** move by Caldwell. "Hey, let's struggle for a half against a good D, then right when we think (but don't know) we figured our offense timing issues out, we'll pull the plug on this close game and go on to lose in embarassing fashion. That way we can limp into the playoffs".

Seriously, I'll give him a pass here. When your coach makes a d-bag move, you have every right to be frustrated. Just don't be a d!ck about it after the game (he wasn't). Reggie and Dallas had the WTF???? look too.

Re: I'm popping the champagne......

So now we're turning into the '72 Dolphins (only, without the Super Bowl ring)?

I agree with what you're saying of course, BUT I still think that it is and always will be, quite an accomplishment.

I realize that we didn't win the SB in 07, and it's god-awfully horiible to watch or even think about, etc. But I am not going to let a 1/100 lucky catch off the side of the helmet ruin an entire season, great memories, etc. There's been 43 SB's, but only 1 team who ever had a perfect 16 game season.

Who knows? In 10-15-20 years down the road, long after anyone cares about SB 42, we could still be the only team to ever have had a perfect regular season (in the 16 game modern era). Not only did we go all the way up to 18-0, but no ones ever gone past 14-0.

I will always long for that 'missing' SB, that's a given. But at the same token, some of this 'failing' talk arose from the media too. Remember how the last regular season game was on every network, it was THE most important thing in the media. Then when they accomplished it, the mediots starting talking about the 'new' next standard. I believe having the only modern day perfect regular season is still a great thing. In every SB, you'll obviously going to have a winner and a loser, but losing by a FG that day shouldn't ruin a whole season's worth of memories like it has for so many people.

(edit:) that said, I'm not going to start threads about popping champagne either)

I'm popping the champange...to celebrate another AFC East title.

As for 16-0...I guess that's a nice distinction, but still empty.

Re: I'm popping the champagne......

For the first time since the SB loss to the Giants I feel like I am officially out of my fog as a fan. Something about seeing the Colts admit that the pressure of trying to make it all the way undefeated made what happened to us sting a lot less. At least I know that our coach would ever pull some crap like that.

Re: I'm popping the champagne......

The Colts were nothing like the '07 Patriots. The '07 Patriots dominated the vast majority of the games and carried the "could they be perfect" burden from about week 8 on. The Colts needed something like 7 4th quarter comebacks in their first 14 games to remain perfect and the media did not consider them a potential undefeated team until much later in the season (and they shared that "burden") with the Colts for all but one week. To see the Colts franchise make the decision that going for an undefeated season was too risky/strenuous whatever should give Patriot fans a lot of pride in what the '07 team accomplished with the target on its back (and don't forget the "spygate" burden as well).

The '07 Super Bowl loss will probably be the worst defeat any fanbase has to go through in most of our lifetimes. The Patriots played their worst game of the season, yet still should have won that game. If one of maybe 7-8 plays in that game goes the "right" way, the Patriots win and go down as the greatest team of all time. I feel bad for the players on that team who played great all year, yet missed out on "all time" recognition because of a helmet catch, some dropped interceptions, and other assorted plays.

I won't be popping any champagne, but today was a reminder (at least to me) that the '07 team faced a heavy burden and accomplished some great things.

finally someone who gets it.......to go 18-0 may never be repeated....Yes the game that can never be mentioned again will never be forgotten......But I am proud of what that 2007 team accomplished.....and will recognize it every year when the last team falls in reg season or post.......just not as obnoxiously as the 72 doofins! GO PATS 2009 AFC EAST CHAMPS!!!!

Re: I'm popping the champagne......

its sad that no one mentions that we are the only other team to go 16-0... That win streak the colts have is a fraud... we won 21 actual games, we went 16-0 in the reg season... I want the colts in the playoffs one last time...

Re: I'm popping the champagne......

I'd want the Colts too, but I'd actually rather see the Jets beat the Colts in the playoffs. Is there a way Santa can make that happen?

Re: I'm popping the champagne......

Payatons getting OLD looking.

Funny, I saw a recent photo of Tom and I thought that Tommy is
no young guy any more and is starting to show some aging.

It's not so much about celebrating that the Pats 16-0 regular season is safe (which is still kind of nice); it's more about celebrating the fact that Indy has no chance of going undefeated anymore. They have no chance of being "the greatest team ever".

That's my thought too. It would be insufferable watching the Colts complete the accomplishment we were so close to completing and failed.

A note on the whole Dolphins' champagne thing. Before 2007, I always sort of liked that part of the NFL season. When the last undefeated team fell, there'd be a little mention of the Dolphins, they still stood alone, etc. Teams should be proud of their accomplishments.

But that changed in 2007--not because I'm a Pats' fan, but the Dolphins were yakking all year, disparaging the Pats, which is a lot different than being proud of your own accomplishments.

As for the Colts' losing, I can't get over how lame it is they didn't try. (And by the way, spare me the face, Peyton. If he wanted to play, he would have been playing. Please.) So I guess in a way, it is a cause for happiness, because the Pats' accomplishment does become more impressive, even though they failed to reach 19-0.

A few posters early in this thread gave some responses that I thought were a little odd, "we aren't the '72 Dolphins" and "the 2007 Pats season still rings hollow" and my favorite, "it's nice to visit the practice squad". Really? You guys can't see how Pats fans would find this whole Indy thing a little amusing? Of course the thread starter isn't going to be popping champagne (it's sarcasm) and of course the Colts losing yesterday doesn't make the ending to the Pats 2007 season loss any less painful. But it's sports and part of the fun of being a fan is rooting against your rivals. Seeing Colts players, fans and media so upset and dejected is great. Obviously not as great as if the Pats beat them but it's still enjoyable. If you're a Red Sox fan you root against the Yankees because that's part of being a fan and vice versa. Having somebody to hate and root against is much better than being indifferent. So no, as a Pats fan I don't feel a tremendous sense of pride or elation by watching the Colts lose in such a disheartening way...but I do find it funny and if that makes me immature, well so be it. I've been a die hard fan since 1978 and I've got no problem admitting to chuckling to myself as I watched "The Manning Face" come round again.

Also, who knows how this decision affects the team in the playoffs. It probably means nothing in the long run, but it might...

Either way it was enjoyable for the average or the hard core Pats fan. Just my opinion.

I'd be pretty pissed too if I know we threw away an easily winnable game. I don't blame Peyton one bit. Horrible coaching decision imo.

I'd be happier if the Jets beat the real Colts and not the pre-season version of the Colts.

Hey as long as the players and coaches aren't doing it, it's perfectly reasonable and expected for us fans to openly root against other teams breaking or tying our 07 season. I'm happy that we are still the only 16-0 regular season team. To each his own.

That really was one of the worst coaching decisions of all time. A moment that will live in infamy.
The Colts had a chance to make history, and their coaches decided to punt it away.
Our only consolation as sports fans is that Peyton Manning and the Colts fans probably feel a lot worse about this than we do. :)

I don't know, but in 2007 I would have preferred to see the Patriots lose with Brady IN. I wouldn't have gotten much amusement out of them losing with Brady OUT, because well....that's not a true loss.

Wouldn't you rather see them lose with Manning IN, in other words, a legit loss?
