Maybe thats what has to happen for them to give up Bay, but an expensive SS with a career .645OPS is not what this team needs. Especially since he's still controlled for next year.
with a bunch of unknown prospects mixed in. Apparently this is very close to happening.

Stanton is awesome looking but I think he's either staying with Florida or going to Pittsburgh.well, not really unknown prospects thrown in...i just read in the globe that one of the Marlin prospects that Boston would keep is Mike Stanton. This guy is a stud in the Marlins farm system.

According to Will Carroll (the guy who said Santana to Boston was a done deal, so take it with a hefty grain of salt), the deal is done and Boston gets Bay and John Grabow for Manny and a prospect. Depending on the prospect that could be about as good a deal as they could ask for.

The Manny Ramirez trade conversations are expected to continue into Thursday, according to a source. Because it's a very complicated deal, involving a player who has the right to veto the trade and other parts, it is still unlikely to happen. But the negotiations will go on.
Some reports are saying that Boston actually gives up 2 or 3 prospects in the deal. Yikes.I have a feeling we'll find out as soon as this awful game is over. Orsillo just hinted that we'd find out one way or the other as soon as the game's over.

by Will Carroll
The Commissioner’s Office has been informed of a deal involving the Pirates, Red Sox, and Marlins. The Commissioner has to sign off on any deal involving cash considerations of more than a million dollars and there was clearly going to be cash involved in any deal. There’s also some formality about Manny Ramirez waiving his 10-5 rights and no trade clause and I’ll admit not understanding the technicalities.
So here’s what Pee Wee Herman would call the “big but.” The teams, I am told, have not agreed on the specific prospects to be included in the deal. It’s expected that in addition to the principals, the Red Sox would get John Grabow and give up two prospects while the Marlins would get one prospect and give up two. There’s still a lot of haggling but my scribbling notes make it look like the structure of the deal is:
Marlins get Manny Ramirez, one prospect (BOS), and cash (likely Ramirez’s remaining salary)
Pirates get Jeremy Hermida and three prospects (two FLO, one BOS)
Red Sox get Jason Bay and John Grabow
There is still potential for this to fall apart over the prospects, though things appear closer now than ever before.
Some reports are saying that Boston actually gives up 2 or 3 prospects in the deal. Yikes.
Heres the actual post from Carroll:

"so the Sox are going to have an extra 15 mil on hand next year to maybe make a run at Sabathia."
Why in the name of Christ would the Red Sox back up the money truck for that overated tub of goo, who never has and never will be a money pitcher?
Unreal.
After the trade the Angels pulled off with the Braves, they are FAR and away the WS favorite at this point.
I don't ever recall a Red Sox team that has gotten swept as many times as they have this year, AND there's still two effin months to go. They absolutely blow on the road, now they can't win at home either, a whopping 4-8 out the gate for the second half of the year, getting swept twice by the Angels and almost by the Yankees, 1-5 at home vs two of the top four teams in the AL.
They are about to get passed by the Yankees, who were what, 10 effin games out and now they are one game behind the Red Sox?
Pitiful.
