Giants defense is overrated-let up 351 points

The Pats are not playing the Chargers of week 2. The current edition of the Chargers team is much improved and a very formidable squad. To underestimate them would be folly.

blah.....blahblah...blahblah.......

The Chargers just intercepted Brady 3 times and held the Pats to 21 points. Do you even watch football?

I just want your honest opinion. Do the Chargers have a better D than the Giants?

Any given sunday. The Giants have the better pass rush and in my opinion the better coordinator. Who knows what will happen

I think what you meant was 21 points + 9 minutes.
maybe you didn't watch that part...........

they also got stomped.
what was your point, again?

The Chargers had 30 INT in the regular season, the NYG had 15.

Only from the ends. The Chargers have Merriman, Castillo, Williams, Phillips... all were neutralized.

Let's play your game.

TB lost 3 of 4 coming into the playoffs. Only win, against the Falcons.

Dallas averaged 33 pts/game over the first 12 games...care to guess what they averaged in December? 15 pts/game. Tony Romo threw 4 tds and 5 ints in December.

GB looked good down the stretch averaging close to 30 pts/game, albeit they played the Raiders, Rams, Bears, and Lions. Powerhouses, all of them. They lost to the Bears, hmm, cold and windy in that game too.

I have no retort for the Seahawks, GB owns them in the playoffs at Lambeau. Good win by them.

Look, I'm not saying the Giant's D is bad, but I'm also not saying that they are world beaters. They went out and won those games and deserve to be in the SB. I just think that they really don't match up well against the Pats, especially when weather will be a non-factor.

The Patriot offense is the best in the NFL history and when it is on its game in weather neutral conditions nobody can stop them. But the Giant D is much better than the "351 points allowed" may indicate. After the Pats blew out Pitt this season, brady had some interesting comments about the Steeler D. he said they were overrated despite their #1 ranking because in order to pressure the pocket they had to blitz. He said truly elite defenses pressure with only 4 and drop 7 into coverage, and those are the Defenses that present him with the biggest challenge. As an example he gave Freeney and Mathis with the Colts. The Giants more than qualify in that regard, with the best and deepest pass rushing D-line in football, IMO much better than the overrated Carolina Panther D-line of SB 38.

I do .

I've follow giants all season aand their d-line is grosly overrated. They don't pressure the pocket as well with their front 4, as we have been lead to believe In fact they dial up alot of exotic blitzes (ex: they ran corner blitzes against the packers) and giants fan have been calling for Osi head all season.

I just want your honest opinion. Do the Chargers have a better D than the Giants?

Yes, the Chargers have the most defensive talent in the NFL. I posted prior to the SD game that they were the best D in the NFL. That said, the Giants have certain advantages over the Chargers. BB said last night on his radio show that he felt the Charger D became exhausted in the second half due to playing an extra physical game in the playoffs and the 2 cross country trips, and that contributed to the Pats ability to ram it down their throats in the 2nd half. BB said that he understood that was a factor because the Pats went through the same fatigue in the AFCCG in Indy last season. In the Sb, the Pats and NY will be on equal rest. Watching the NY/GB contest, the Giant D does not tire out over 60 minutes due to D-line depth and plays with relentless energy. Also, I believe the Charger O was not operating at its usual efficiency in the AFCCG. Part of that had to do with a solid defensive effort by the Pats, part with the Chargers' crippling injuries.

As much as I have mocked Eli Manning over the years, he put forth a heroic effort vs GB, and has been the best Qb in the postseason this year. He has yet to throw a pick. The Giant O-line is tremendous if healthy, with the 2nd best OG in the NFL in Snee (Mankins is #1). the Giants have the potential to play much better on O than SD did.

I do believe the reemergence of Seymour and the improved play of Meriweather will have a big impact on the Pats D in the SB, as well as possible injuries along the Giant O-line, with Seubert and O'Hara hobbled. But the Giants are much better than the composite regular season stats indicate, due to excellence in the trenches, some game breaking offensive talent and the emergence of a mistake-free, composed QB.

I'll give you that the Giants have a better Pass rush than the 38 SB Panthers, but what does that have to do with this year, this team, this SB.

As for the Pass Rush of the Giants this year, I'll agree that their D-line is better than the Chargers D-line, but I'll give the edge to the Chargers at LB and definitely in the secondary. We still can't forget that the Pats hung 38pts on the Giants without the right side of our O-line.

I think we're totally worrying about the wrong side of the ball. The real question is, can the Pats D make enough stops to win the game. The Giants can definitely score with the Pats if we play like we did in the first meeting.

Tuck, Strahan, Umenyiora, Robbins, Cofield are very strong. Everyone knows the Giants like to blitz, but they don't have to blitz IOT apply pressure. I agree that Umenyiora is not the best of the bunch and tends to disappear in big games vs elite tackles, although he got the best of F. Adams down the stretch of the Cowboy game- that may have been the key to stopping Romo on the last drive.

The Giant secondary cannot hang with the Pats weapons. It's that simple. If you watch the Giants, you will see that they suffer a lot of breakdowns in their secondary. The Driver TD last week is a perfect example.

If the Giants are to live and die with pressure, what makes anyone here think they can do in the Super Bowl what they failed to do in the regular season against a Patriots' offensive line that was missing two starters and its best blocking tight end?

I was looking at the standings, and saw that the Giants have scored 373 points, which is slightly above average. They have decent offense, but the defense let up 351 points.

Teams who have let up less include.

New England
Pittsburgh
Indy
Jax
Tennessee
San Diego
Kansas City
Dallas
Washington
Philly
Green Bay
Minnesota
Chicago
Tampa Bay
Carolina
St. Louis

and then teams within 20 points

Buffalo
Jets
San Fran

The Giants are in the bottom defense wise. Now they have good pressure with the front 4, but if you can keep them away from TB, you will have a field day.

I hear ya. I'm so sick and tired of hearing about this Giants defense. We put up 38 points on these guys on the road!! Good lord. They had 1 sack. Let's settle down with these guys. Jacksonville and San Diego had better defenses than these guys.

I love how people just find a way to tweak any stat in their favor. You remember, our defense didn't play their best against the Giants also. What did we give up? 35 points.

Throw it all out the window. It's the Super Bowl, *****es!

Do the Pats wait to play pressure until the second half or do they go after manning right away and hope the DBs can cover Burress, Smith etc? Should be interesting. I dont think they want Manning to build up confidence in the SB.

No kidding. Hey guess what, this was the most points our team gave up all year in a game, and 7 was on a KO return.

Also, out of 18 games, guess how many time our team gave up 21+ pts? Only 5 times. Dallas had a fumble return for a TD, Miami had a INT return for a TD, and the Giants as noted above. Only the Eagle and Raven didn't have a momentum changing type play to aid their scoring.

Our D isn't that bad.

There are just 3 points I want to make.

1) The Patriots are at their BEST, when BB and the coaching staff have 2 weeks to prepare. This does not bode well for the Giants' chances

2) The Patriots have the most prolific scoring offense in the history of the NFL. They scored 589 points, shattering the Vikings record of 566. The Pats finished the season with a scoring average of 36.8 PPG.

3) The Patriots have already beat the Giants at their best, and the Pats also put up 38 points on that defense in the process. The final margin made it closer than it was as the Pats had a 10 point lead, and the Giants scored a meaningless TD with almost no time left.

That's all for now.
