Like many of you, I found Easterbrooks article to be severely lacking.

He says that the Pats were 60-40 Passing to Running. Its actually 56.5 to 43.5.

What he also fails to mention is that, through the 1st 6 games, the Pats actually were a RUN HEAVY team. In fact, here are the breakdowns:
Week : Pass / Run
Week 1: 28/37
Week 2: 31/32
Week 3: 29/38 *Maroney goes down
Week 4: 32/34
Week 5: 38/32
Week 6: 46/29 * Morris goes down - is IRed
Week 7: 28/22 * Maroney returns, Cassel has 2 PA, Gutierrez has 1 PA
Week 8: 41/35 * Cassel has 3 PA
Week 9: 32/28
Week 10: 41/29 * Cassel has 2 PA, Eckel and Evans combine for 18 2nd half carries, Pats throw only 12 times in 2nd half
Week 11: 54/16
Week 12: 38/24
Week 13: 46/22
Week 14: 27/35
Week 15: 33/25
Week 16: 42/26

As we can see, it wasn't until week 5, when Maroney was out of commission, that the Pats started going to the pass MORE. Yes, it culminated in the 54 pass to 16 run game against the Eagles, followed by the 38/24 (pass/run) against the Ravens, and the 46/22 (pass/run) against the Steelers. 3 of the best run defenses in the league. Why would you run against them?

I fixed it for you.

(I hated giving the link so he gets hits but ......)

>>>In fact, the NFL's passing yardage leader has never gone on to win the Super Bowl in the same season.<<<<

2006 Drew Brees Saints 4418 Lost NFC championship
What he fails to mention is that just last year, Manning had 4397 yards, 21 behind Brees...

Oh and 3 of the last 11 who failed to win the Super Bowl lost to Patriot teams, '96 Jaguars, '01 Rams and '04 Colts....
On the other hand, no team had ever gone 16-0 in the regular season. So the Pats have already set new precedents, in particular, the precedent of breaking old precedents.

Easterbrook is either a complete moron or didn't even watch the game.

The previous play was a PLAY ACTION pass, the TD score was a totally different play that was designed for Wes Welker and because he was double covered, Brady found Moss on the sideline..

I think he got caught being lazy.

This thread proves at least two things -

1) Members here are capable of insisting any piece of writing is trash

2) The very obvious point that virtually any argument made (including those by the folks protesting in this thread) can be undermined by some other fact or theory

Amongst the knee-jerk hatred its hardly surprising none of the posters in this thread mention TMQ quotes from the same column they lambaste like-

the New England defense is much better than appreciated

For two seasons, Mike Vrabel has been the league's best linebacker

For XLII consecutive years, the passing yardage leader has not been the quarterback to hoist the trophy as the Super Bowl concludes. Never. Maybe this year's Patriots will be the exception.

Brady, the Patriots receivers and especially the New England offensive line are all such good players -- and because Wes Welker blocks better than some offensive linemen on other teams

It's not that New England cannot rush, the Patriots finished 13th in the league in rushing yards

Yup, real Patriot-hating trash there. The guy is offering up something to think about in this column, not declaring that he has found the end all, be all. I feel sad for the angry dudes who posted here - your missing out on some fun free thinking.

Way to miss the point, which is that he doesn't care about facts, only his own agenda and double-standard. I have the same problems with him when he's not going after the Pats, too.

I'm throughly impressed that he took the time to point out that New England is good, though; real cutting-edge stuff right there, and it means he's entirely objective.

Another FACT he missed, the Pats played in a "wintry mix" against the Dolphins? Hmm, I was there, I remember 50 degrees, overcast, little wind and rain for about 1 minute during the 4th quarter.

In that game, Brady was forcing the ball to Moss, he threw 5 passes deep to Moss in the second half, 2 picks and 3 incompletions. I think he was taking chances against a team he didn't fear would come back. The only reason it appeared the Pats ran the ball in that game is that Maroney had two huge runs, and they actually threw the ball more than they ran (34/21)

I really hated Eastabrook for the Spygate articles, and thought he was a deranged stalker with an agenda. But I don't really see an agenda in this recent article. His facts weren't 100%, but his point about pass-happy teams not being historically successful in the playoffs is a valid point for an article. Plus, he was complimentary about Vrabel and some other Patriots points.

And most of all, I liked the part about the Colts breaking a moral rule by laying down and screwing Cleveland out of a playoff spot. Where's the outrage over that?

With the Charles rule, I don't disagree with changing it to 5 yards but no first down, especially if the contact is incidental or accidental.

With the faceguarding penalty, I thought that play was almost identical to the Hobbs on Wayne play in last year's AFCC game. I didn't see contact.

I disagree, I officiate college football, I thought this one was an easy call, the one on Hobbs I thought was no contact. I really look at the officiating unobjectively, despite being a fan.

Man we have a lot of soft spinless wussies on this board!! To all of you wondering where the props, love, quan, or respect is here is a message from true fans. Who gives a rat's ass??? Our team is the best where it counts and I like many real fans like them nasty and unforgiving on the opposition. thats football play the sport once in a while and you'd know that god get over it please your making me sick!!

Don't honk at TMQ for writing a bad article be mad at yourself for being stupid enough for reading it again

If a player from another team had done what Wilfork did, you'd all be screaming bloody murder. Kind of like how everyone whined here about the Colts last year, and the Steelers in Super Bowl XL ("oh the injustice!"). Typical double standard. The Pats can do no wrong!

So the guy wrote something you don't agree with, this is America. Get over it.

This is silly, the guy wrote an article on a national sports website run by the biggest sports media company in the world and it was inaccurate, all we are doing is pointing out the inaccuracies. I for one, don't think he's either rooting for or against the Pats, I just think it's disappointing that a person with his reach isn't putting forth the effort to be accurate.

I don't care if no one in the world sees how great the Pats are, I'm enjoying the hell out of it.

People are harping on a nationally-known writer making things up and passing them off as fact, not his lack of man-love for all things Patriot.

Take your meds.

thats exactly my point he isn't saying he loves the pats so he must be an idiot he is making stuff up and yet people keep reading him on here then making comments stop reading him for crying out loud. He is only nationally known because he is contriversial, see it for what it is and move on. Like I said I like my guys hated and nasty thats football thats how its supposed to be till Soccer moms and dads starting watching it :rocker:

Yeah, it was football when only real men like you watched it. I only wish I weren't so metro.

Dude, you have no clue what you are talking about. If you did, you'd damn well know what you just said was BS.

I honestly would have had no problem with Wilfork getting a penalty there. But to somehow justify the BS non-calls that the Colts got away with last year or the absolutely pathetic display of officiating in SB XL that the Steelers benefited from shows how much of a hater you are. And how little you know about the game.

For the record, I've been extremely disappointed with the Officiating during the play-offs over the last 4 years. The quality just isn't there.

With this kind of logic you've taken away my ability to argue, because I have no idea what you're saying.

Change the Charles Rule: ...

What a holeass. Now he wants to change the "Charles Rule" when he was the biggest proponent of the re-emphasis after New England beat the Colts in the AFCCG.
.

The guy is obviously an anti-Pats tool who loves the Colts. The 5 yard rule is great if it helps the Colts, but once the Pats adjust, suddenly it isn't fair anymore?

He's just like other hypocritical morons who said Manning had the best QB season, then say Roger Craig had a better best season than Marshall Faulk because Faulk's stats were inflated by a Dome turf.

dont worry you can change! but seriously why are people so sensitive to this jackass, who cares what he or anyone that doesnt write about the team on a weekly basis think? be hardcore and watch the game for what it is a brutal sport that is full of nasty snarling men looking to rip the other guys head off on every play. You'd have more fun that way

See, this is what I'll never get. Humiliate the league for doing... what? Catching the Patriots in the act of violating the rules?

I tell ya, the whole thing's a big mystery.

It wasn't the fine or the pick. It was the faux-shock and the self-righteous responses from everyone that annoyed me at the time. After the Pats started wrecking fools, there's no way I was going to change the sig. Don't eff with a winning streak! :D

Whatever you say, Conan.
