does anyone know how to compute passer rating? i would like to know what he needs to get this weekend in order to gain enough to get the record. or if it is even possible.

Not even close to possible thanks to the birds, propellorless aircraft and aquatic mammal games

i think he is four or five points off the record, wasnt sure if a perfect or near perfect rating would do it

Perfect can't get him there. It's 1/16th.

Well, the record is 121.1 and he's @ 117.2. So that's only a 3.9 that he needs to bring it up by. I'm sure that if he has a stellar game it could happen.

I must be doin' something wrong to figure out the average... when I add up his ratings and divide by 15 (number of games played not counting bye week), I come up with 114.6, not 117.2. So I'm not sure how the average is calculated... It seems plausible though to say he can pull it off with another high completion day with a 3+ TD day and 0 picks...

there is a website http://www.primecomputing.com that does the calculations for you.

As for the season it is not the average of the 16 ratings but one rating for the entire seasons totals etc. Brady would have to set some (quite a few) single game records to get the record season rating

No, they don't do it game-by-game, they take his total attempts, completions, etc for the entire year and do a calculation based on that (as if they all happened in the same game). Otherwise it would be an average of averages.

Ahh, thanks for the information and the site :)

Agreed. I was simplifying, assuming an 'avg' for the 2007 season # of attempts, etc. No way he can make it given even an outstanding game with a perfect rating.

Were he to throw 40 passes, complete 75% with 4 TDs and no INTs and get over 300 yds, his rating would still be the same

To get to like 122 ish he'd have to have 600+ attempts, 450+ completions, 5000 yards, 52 TD's and 8 INT's... oh well...

Edit:

If it TOTALLY lit up the TD record... like threw 7 TD's and no INT's he could do it. I.E. 35/40 for 400 yards w/ 7 TD's no INT's ending with these stats...

576 attempts
401 comp
4850 Yards
55 TD
8 INT

Gives a final rating of 121.2.... So it "can" be done but I doubt he'll have a 40 attempt day. As much as I'd love to see he pop off a 400 yard day with 7 TD's, I guess we'll just have to deal without that record.

He could make it, he would have to have a similar game to the first one against Miami again though.

well SoCal; three of those are remotely possible...

No he could not

EDIT: Look down at the next two posts

Actually, season passer rating is based on total number of attempts, completions, TDs and INTs over the year, and is NOT averaged by game (so games with tons of attempts or TDs or whatever mean more than games with fewer attempts, TDs, etc.). Anyway, it would take a monster game, but he could do it. Since the formula takes into account many things, there are different ways to get there. I played with it in my RTG spreadsheet for a bit and ended up with some interesting ways it could be done:

First, if he repeats his Miami game from week 7 he would do it:
21 of 25 for 354 yards and 6 TDs

Gives him a season rating of 121.4 for the all time record!

Some other lines that would put him at 121.1 for the year. They keys seem to be lots of TDs and a VERY HIGH CMP %:

22 of 28 for 375 yards and 6 TDs -- similar to first Jets game, but with more TDs
29 of 31 for 400 yards and 5 TDs -- with only 5 TDs, the CMP has to be near perfect
28 of 31 for 350 yards and 6 TDs -- this is somewhat reasonable
38 of 40 for 400 yards and 6 TDs
34 of 40 for 400 yards and 7 TDs -- too crazy I think from here down
35 of 40 for 380 yards and 7 TDs

I just redid MY math and you guys are correct. It is possible.

Me, I'd have the big one if Brady had a 6 TD game. It would be worth it. Good way to go.

Please learn what you are talking about.

Current Stats:
366/536 4450 yards 48tds 8ints

+ the same stats from the miami game would give him

387/561 4804 yards 54tds 8ints

which equals 121.39 rating.

21 of 25 for 354 and 6 TDs (Miami in week 7) would give Brady the final season stats as follows:

387 of 561 for 4804 yards 54 TDs and 8 INTs = 121.4 QB rating

Check it here

Again, piling up TDs or yards in blowouts really helps the season average since they season rating is not averaged by game to game ratings.

Well sweet. Even if he only passes 25x as long as it's high completion and high TD volume... lol

Yes, see previous post

thanks everyone for answering the question quite thoroughly, and not hijacking the thread:)
