Sloppy field is a disadvantage for a team that depends on precise route to be ran by the receiver. When running in mud or walking on ice you just can't go full speed you need to keep your center of gravity. Trying running in mud and snow sometimes. When a team is built on speed and beating the man in front on you that's hard to do.
Actually, I believe the playing surface was changed because the NFL complained that it was so bad (due in part to the dual revolution use). The Pats won 3 SB's on the grass surface, they didn't really need to change it (as it was a perceived strength, although maybe not an actual strength)
