Eugene Wilson

That to me is Rodney's influence. Those were nice highlights but I don't see that type of play as the norm for him.

I've seen Asante lay out people like that from his corner spot.

And I have seen Wilson lay out people from the safety spot. What's your point?

Of course it is Rodney's influence! But Geno still needed to make the play. I really don't know what your point is here.

The point from the beginning is that he's been a serviceable player, but I've not been too enamoured with his game at FS and would like to see that position upgraded.

That is why we drafted a FS in round 1 this year. It may be a bit too soon to throw the rookie into the mix, I would prefer to at least start with the 4 year veteran. If Geno plays well then it is a win-win, if he struggles then we have options to back him up.

From what I have seen I am far more comfortable with a healthy Wilson covering Dallas Clark than Merriweather. Shockey undresses the rookie a couple times on very simple routes.

But, other than 2005 which we all agree no one was good, you have yet to explain what it is that Wilson doesn't do.

Or, better stated, your explanations don't seem to be backed up by what I have seen. You position on him is clear, but I don't see how anyone could possibly come to that conclusion unless they base 80% of their opinion on 2005.

Cutting Wilson would just be stupid as he's our best FS at the moment and doesn't have a big cap number. It's going to hurt the team if he's not ready for the first few weeks.

I agree this guy has been injury prone. Way too much for my taste. But personally I haven't seen too many bad games out of him when he is healthy and has Rodney beside him. I just hope some of you are not basing your opinion of one game called Super Bowl 38 against him. Up to that point he played like a probowler. Since then we've mysteriously seen very little from him.

Agreed. But his coverage skills have always been suspect to me. If he's left on an island without help.....he gets burnt relatively often. As a corner, he's very average.

He was projected as a 1st round pick at corner (I believe we traded up in #2 to get him). He was switched to safety before he had any chance to play corner, that i can remember.

So what do you base that opinion on?

I love the way Geno is capable of playing and would be crushed to see him in a new jersey.
You forget a few short years ago he had more talent and potential then ***ante Samuel.
He was laying out big hits in big games had a few interceptions and had great chemistry with Rodney.
I'm on board saying let's sign both him and Gay to fair contracts now and allow there injuries to get them at cap friendly hometown discounts now.
Watch Assante sweat and if he's a pat next year great!
If not we have Big Vince to lock up.
Also we have the luxury of 2 first round picks to wheel and deal next draft and find solid or even spectacular db's in the draft.

Have people on this site had private workouts wit Wilson and determined he couldn't play corner?

Here is ESPN draft tracker and the only question is his work ethic, not ability.

Again, I've only seen him playing safety, where do these "can't play corner" opinions come from, thin air?
=====================================================================
Positives: Very instinctive and aware. A natural athlete with quick-twitch, explosive movements and an excellent burst to close on balls thrown in front of him. Has a good feel for the game and is solid and aggressive in man-to-man coverage. Is good in transition and has hip flip. Excellent reactions in zone defense and overall ball reactions. Takes good angles, and times and jumps better than numbers indicate. Is willing in support and tackles. Agility is a strength, as is smarts and ball-tracking. Has 38-inch vertical.

Negatives: Only an average worker in the weight room and on the practice field; nor is he a film junkie. Things come too easily and he doesn't go the extra mile. Not a face-up tackler. Will gamble for interceptions in key situations. Played primarily man coverage in college.

Summary: Reminds some of ex-Florida CB Lito Sheppard, a second-round pick of the Eagles in 2002. Wilson should be drafted in the first two rounds because of his talent, but he needs to become more of a worker.

I agree. I used this argument when I thought Wilson might be starting CB if we didn't tag Asante. If a guy gets picked with one of the first couple picks in the 2nd round and gets switched to another position out of NECESSITY on the team's behalf, not out of a lack of talent at his original position, how can anyone think he is unable to play his original position, the position that deemed him worthy of being a borderline 1st round pick.

And we start the season with 3 cornerbacks, by most projections. And a ton of safeties.

Counting Meriweather as a cornerback is a joke, just read his comments to Reiss in the "safeties" article about a week back.

He doesn't have a clue and is happy as can be to play a position he knows how to play (safety).

I think switching Geno to playing cornerback a lot to regain familiarity is a no brainer

BB and DP admitted that they made a mistake when they gvae Geno a lot of CB work in the 2006 PS. They have no plans to put him back there. I do think that Geno has now become a FS and is just as likely to play CB as any other FS in the league. That said, I think he is a lot better FS than many here do.

I, as well, am a Eugene Wilson supporter. He is the best FS on our team as of right now and I hope we resign him next year. Even if Merriweather ends up starting next year, it is good to have quality depth, especially at a position which we had many injuries recently. Personally, I agree with the guy who said Merriweather can possibly replace Rodney next year if he retires. Either way, I would prefer to resign Geno. The guy who started the thread arguing against him doesn't seem to know what he's talking about and has no actual facts that support his claims. You can dislike a player, but that doesn't mean he's bad. Geno played very good last year (except maybe the Jets game which was mentioned), and he is our starting FS whether you like it or not.

This fellows new injury could not have come soon enough for his sake, as I believe he had a chance at being a final cut.

I understood he has a lot of value in his knowledge of our system, but IMHO, his upside stopped going up about 3 years ago.

He's been injured alot lately, but has anyone noticed he often experiences some little injury when he gets embarassingly beaten on plays.

I hate sounding harsh, but Geno has ALWAYS seemed to be the the secondaries achilles heal to me.

I'm eagerly looking forward to watching the continued growth and development of Sanders and Meriweather.
Please tell me this is a joke?

May be an exagerration on my part, but put me down as someone not too enamoured with him.

I think I may be expecting to much from him, but I'm looking forward to having Merriweather eventually replace him.

I just have an appreciation for what I've seen so far fom BM (not bowel movement, although we can use that if he becomes a bust), and like the toughness and grittiness he brings to FS position to complement Rodney.

I think Merriweather is gonna be better than Eugene. I know it's only preseason but last night against the G-men I was impressed. He was always around the ball and making tackles. He has great instincts. I think by mideason it will be very hard to keep him off the field.
