D & C locked out of WEEI, might be an opportunity for a Pats Apologist...

I used to like listening to D&C but have gotten out of the habit. I absolutely cannot stand that dweeb John Metaparrel and their guest hosts (excepting my man DeOssie) are unlistenable.

I'll admit that Gresh is even worse.

I hope it is not Gresch, he is painful to listen to.. Zo does not impress me either.

C'mon! Where else can you get quality humor like that? They've revived hundreds of old fart jokes, fat chicks, etc. Lets give them a bigger audience!

:(

Good riddance to D/C. Callahan is a racist and Dennis is just an idiot. They should have been bounced long ago. The ONLY reason why their ratings have been high is because of the success of the local sports teams during their tenure. People were going to listen to WEEI no matter who hosted that show these last few years. They owe their success to the Red Sox and Patriots.

MORNING DRIVE 25 TO 54 YEAR-OLDS:
1. KISS 108 (WSKS-FM) 7.4 share
2. WEEI-AM (850) 7.0

AFTERNOON DRIVE 25 to 54 year-olds
1. WEEI-AM (850) with a 6.5
2. MAGIC 106.7 (WMJX-FM) 5.4

So, the (non-sports) morning drive has a higher share than the afternoon drive. That can't possibly be explained solely by the success of the Red Sox and Patriots.

I think Pete Sheppard has earned a shot at hosting his own show. I don't know if the morning slot is best suited for him, but he is very good IMO.

I think the 4:45-5:00 A.M. slot would be perfect for him.

The ratings also stayed strong because Dennis is a solid media personality in his own right. Like I said, Callahan, despite being a turd, is a very good sports columnist. here's hoping they each go back to doing what they do best.

personally would like to see someone like DeOssie get the chance, but needs a strong partner as his views of the other sports are painful..

DeOssie is great - and his views on other sports aren't painful. The guy played college baseball, he knows what he's talking about. He's one of my favorite to listen to on EEI.

It is in the eye of the beholder, me thinks he is great on football and not so great on the other sports, he stammers too much when he talks of other sports and does not make as much sense.

I understand that the drive-time slot has to go beyond hardcore sports talk, but I've always been surprised at D & C's success. They strike me as awfully mediocre. No, their politics don't suit me, but that's really not the problem. I'm perfectly happy to listen to an occasional right-wing rant if it's a clever, funny right-wing rant. D & C just aren't that entertaining, IMO. And as interviewers, yikes! Here's how I picture them asking about the morning weather:

"You know, what really strikes me about the sky, what I think has really been emerging over the past minutes, is what many of us might consider a kind of low cloud cover. When you look at the sky, wouldn't you say that's what we're looking at right now, given that there are so many low clouds covering us? Can you tell us what you think the sky is like right now -- how you would describe the fact that there's a low cloud cover?"

I swear, those two are incapable of asking a question that's shorter than the expected answer! They just use their guests as sounding boards for their own opinions.

I see, so the escaped gorilla WAS a Metco student.

And yes, I have a sense of humor, but when you tell "jokes" like that over public airwaves, you have awful judgment at best, and you're a bigot at worst.

I know I will regret this but, did you hear the quote in question? Do you know who said it? My guess is no.

The morning radio in this city is horrible during baseball season, there is nothing worse than hearing an argument about whether it was a slider or a curve. D&C are pretty good because they have other things to discuss. Their politics are theirs, but at least they have the balls to say what is on their mind and not follow the trend. So they aren't tree huggers and don't have rainbows on their rear windows, at least they aren't just feeding you a line of BS.

Dennis drives me crazy because he can't spit his words out. He'll say, "Well the real answer to the the the the question you asked is is is that the the the...."

And the problem with that is, what???

Sure they have better things to discuss, like golf! I can only really listen beyond 7 AM in July and August because of work, but they talk more golf on that show than almost any other sport in the summer. If that is the case, give me slider vs curve talk.

Also, Callahan is the same guy who came out and got all over Julio Lugo about a domestic violence case in which he was either found innocent or it was dropped. I cannot remember which. On his "welcome to Boston" interview, Callahan used all of time to remind Lugo that he was not Alex Gonzalez, and he had been charged with domestic violence. That is a pure as shole thing to do. You could almost see the smirk on his face as he said it. I would have loved to have heard an introductory interview with Randy Moss!

I don't expect these guys to lob softballs at the athletes, that is not their job nor is it interesting radio. However, be constructive. D&C (along with Wolffe) claim that their audience is the most educated listenership in Boston. If that is the case, you can tailor the discussion towards that intelligence. Ask thought provoking questions. Your educated listenership will understand!

Lastly, of the three daytime shows, the morning show is the least informed sports-wise. I cannot tell you how many times they say, "we'll have to look that up" when discussing something that is fairly common knowledge among sports fans. Last fall they had to "look up" who the pats played next. I could almost hear their entire listenership scream "Cincinnati!" (or whoever it was.) They have to "look up" who will be pitching a game two days away or when the Celtics are playing next at home. Ummm...shouldn't you kind of know these things or at least have a schedule on the wall you can turn to?

Most maddening, though,is they have to "look up" an answer to a caller's point that is central to the show's sports-related theme. When your show is going to revolve around one topic, you may want to take the time to prepare for that topic. Learn all there is to know about it. Anticipate questions and have answers at the ready. D&C do not. They ride the coattails of their ratings. In my line of work, if I had to look up an answer half as often as they did over the course of four hours, let alone my entire work day, I would get nothing done. It is called show prep. You have a six minute break ever 25 minutes. Use that time to have some answers. Doing this allows them to hang up on callers, say they will look up an answer and get back to it later, when the caller is not there to follow through on his point.

I think the difference is Howie Carr vs Tom Finneran...

15. WRKO-AM (680) 3.1 (Howie/Afternoon)
15. WRKO-AM (680) 1.9 share (Tom/Morning)

I don't think you get a lot of people switching from talk to music. I wonder what it was like when Imus was on...

that is rather unfortunate because even though I didn't agree with them much, I was a big fan of listening to D and C. I think they spice up the show with their attitudes toward callers. Let's face it, it's kind of boring when everyone agrees with everyone else on a topic.

I like C on the air. Not his political views, per se, but I just think he is talented on the radio. Plus he is a great writer.

D, on the other hand, is a talentless putz.

Oh, please. Both of them served a two week suspsension over the comment.

Bigot. You want to see a bigot look at Sharpton and "Rev" Jackson.

Sorry, but 1 stupid comment doesn't make you David Duke.

People need to get a little thicker skin. But then again this Mass home to Ted "what bridge" Kennedy, and John "Purple Heart" Kerry...

This is the problem with removing these guys, the people who pay the bills don't like change. They know what they get and changing from edgy to cozy as suggested in this article could make the advertizers change their ad compaigns.

Hey, its football season and they still refuse to talk about football on that station. I find myself listening to music more and more because I can't stand listening to them talk about baseball. D&C changes the dynamic in the morning. They talk just enough sports to get the regular guy and just enough politics to get the political types. The fact that they lean a little to the right attracts even more people who want to get pissed off about what they are saying, debate them or just find out what the other side thinks, kind of like reading the editorial page of the Globe or Herald. They attract a listener base that is different from every other morning drive because of their personalities.

If they leave for another station it will be hard for them to get the same listenership. People are loyal to WEEI and will listen to just about anything they put on, but they will give D&C on the other station a listen and maybe decide that folksy Dale and pretentious Numie are boring, or that they don't talk enough current events, or that they don't get pissed off enough at them, or that they are too fill in the blank. It's a pretty serious game for Entercom to be playing, they could lose the morning over a few dollars. It will be interesting to watch it play out.

Industry sources say several advertisers have already taken steps to either reduce the ad rates they are currently paying or pull their ads entirely from WEEI.

Pretentious Numie... he has been off the mid day show for about 3 years now, and is replaced by Holley.

Pretentious Numie... he has been off the mid day show for about 3 years now, and is replaced by Holley.

He has been on a few times over the past few weeks, and he has done Felger's show a couple of times. Besides, he is probably too old to change the way he comes across.

This decision will be made based on ROI. If the return on investment out weighs the money invested, D&C will be back. If they think they can replace them with little or no effect on the botton line then D&C will go to the new station and compete for ratings with WEEI. Since I have a day job, I don't get to listen to Dale and Holley all that often, but any change in the morning drive dynamic is a possible change in the ratings book. Because the amount of money they can charge for ad time is directly related to the show's ratings, this is a big gamble for the station. Enticom has already diluted the WEEI product by putting the Red Sox on WRKO. Removing the top rated morning drive product, a known quantity, for a new team that may or may not attract the same listeners is a potential career ending decision. I don't knwo what D&C are asking for, but in media change usually isn't a good thing. The fact that they will be allowed to go to a station and directly compete against the new morning team is a big gamble.
