This kinda bummed me out - Chandler Jones kickin ass (so far)

He's always showed up early on. Let's see how he does later in the season and in the playoffs. I hear the Patriots still have an APB out for him in Denver.

Exactly! CJ had spurts here but never did much in the playoffs. I guess he will fit in perfectly with Arizona (see Carson Palmer)

You would think by now that educated football fans would understand some schemes are a better fit for a player ... that is what the numbers reflect ... he's still the same player there that he was when here but he's allowed to go forward more.

The Cardinals defense (scheme) has allowed 101 points which puts them below average. Total defense puts them at 24th ... even worse than the points stat. So has Jones made an impact for that defense? He has a special skill but he's a liability against the run just like when he was here.

jones has ALWAYS looked good this time of the year. the key will be how he looks in November and December

Yes, and the decision to send him away can't be properly evaluated after four games of season #1. It becomes clear after season #3. But who in this world of instant gratification and twitter has time for that?

Hes going to fizzle out as the season winds down, then disappear in the playoffs (if az makes it). Im pretty sure he started out last year similarly hot

The decision to trade Jones can absolutely be evaluated after one season since with the market for DEs being what it is there's no way we would've kept Jones past this season anyway.

I wish CJ well in his future, he is a Pats SB winner after all.

I am waiting to see what happens to the money the Pats were able to set aside by not holding
on to Jones. If they cannot hold on to four of the following I will be quite disappointed: Butler,
Ryan, Shead, Collins, Hightower, Bennett. 2017 is a rare year where the Pats will have lots of
cap space. If a couple of these guys are not signed before this year ends, the Pats may only retain one or two of them.

Sometimes a change of scenery is what a player needs..

In Jones case his alleged flirtation with Synthetic M was not the type of baggage that the Pats wanted to assume..

Was never sure how the Pats were going to pay him, Hightower, Collins, Ryan and Butler et al.

Logan Ryan? Pay him instead of chandler? The guy whose burnt toast?

pur pass rush has been on existent in 3 of the first 4 games this year. From our interior line they have been terrible rushing the passer. Malcolm brown Alan branch Vince Valentine have been getting hammered out there.

I don't understand why when I watch Denver games they get so much pass rush from there D line, while our D line interior gets zero penetration. Why?

Jones had a strip sack in the game against the Pat's, he tipped a pass on Thursday, that ended up getting intercepted by another lineman. AZ was losing 7-0 at the time, he gave them the ball at the SF 20, they scored in the next play ( with their back up QB), and didn't look back after that. Jones makes game changing plays, strip sacks, blocked FG, sacks, he is an impact player.

The Pat's could have had him play this year and then still got a third round pick for him if he left in Free Agency. It was a bad trade, especially when you consider that they are paying Cooper pretty much the same salary that they would have paid Jones.

I'm a bit surprise at all the Chandler Jones hate in this thread. His trade was NEVER about the player, it was all about the MONEY. Trading Jones was just a typical symptom of the salary cap era. It another example of how hard it is to keep good teams together for more than 3 or 4 years, and how remarkable what the Pats have done over the last 16.

Jones was not horrible against the run, as its been alluded to here in this thread. And his pass rush stats (sacks/hits/hurries) were good given how his pass rush opportunities were often limited by the fact the Pats scheme required him to be in coverage at times, and our penchant to "control" rush running QB's.

That trade turned out spectacularly for the Pats. It created the opening that brought us Chris Long. It gave us the draft picks to add two starters in Mitchell and Tuney. It will give us the cap space to sign more of our FA's this off season. (and that's not even considering Cooper's potential contributions)

What I don't understand is why some of us feel the need to try and diminish or qualify what Chandler has accomplished in AZ in order to feel better about the trade. There is no rule that states, in order to make a trade good, not only does YOUR end have to work out, the trading partner has to get screwed. ;). This one (so far) seems to have worked out very well for both sides. They BOTH seemed to have gotten what they wanted and needed. AZ needed a pass rusher. The Pats need the cap space, and draft picks (which turned out to be remarkably productive).

He'll fade down the stretch like always.

You are right about Jones being an impact player at times. But you are DEAD wrong about it being a bad trade for all the reasons I mentioned in the post above. How can it be a bad trade when it created to the opportunity to bring in Long, add 2 starters with the draft picks we got, and create the cap room we will need to sign the MANY FA's we have next season.

I was never about the ability to pay Jones THIS year. It was the likelihood we would lose him in 2017. What we got for him THIS year has been much more productive than any potential pick at around 100 in the 2o18 draft.

I don't think we got enough compensation for a double digit pro bowl sack artist in his prime

Had we franchised him we still would have gotten a third when he left us next year. Is a third that much different than a second? Our pass rush on our d line has been abysmal in 3 out of 4 games this year, especially the interior. I would have liked to have jones for one more year then lose him for a third.

You couldn't be more wrong if you tried.

1. A third IS a LOT different than a second....for a bunch of reasons. First that 3rd is at the every bottom of the round somewhere between 33-42nd pick of the round or around the 100th pick in the draft as opposed to some where in the 40's for the pick the Pats traded. Second, you are would have to wait until 2017 to get that pick. Third, and most important, the Pats turned the pick into TWO starters for THIS season.

2. The Pats rush has NOT been abysmal this season. It is what we needed it to be. The Pats are currently 4th in the NFL in scoring defense. That's AHEAD of both the Broncos and Cardinals, the 2 two teams that lead the league in sacks.

3. That 3rd round comp you so casually throw around, is NOT a given.

4. Finally, the trade created an opening that brought us Chris Long. Given the scheme limitations that Pats defense puts on their DE's that limit pass rush opportunities, who is to say that he hasn't been JUST as good for the Pats as Jones has been for the Cardinals.

Clearly your emotions have ruled you head on this one.

Last year, the Patriots were one of the best pass rushing teams. It hid the problems in the secondary that are showing up this year. Keeping Chanler Jones for another year probably would have been a good idea.
