Report: Josh McDaniels Plans To Leave Patriots, Pursue Head-Coaching Job In 2017

I understand this. Several teams are likely thinking of firing their HCs early. Knowing Josh would be available they may/should delay firing & promoting from within.
Perhaps Matt Patricia is the heir apparent, if there is one at this early stage.
Losing both would be a real bummer.

I hope you aren't right about Josh purposely putting out the word he is available for an in-season change, hopefully Canfora is just speculating and stirring the pot a bit.

I wish Josh well because of his contributions to the Patriots. I hope that he doesn't jump at the first job opening, I don't think that will be the case but I guess you never know.

The ideal position for him would be somewhere with some talent in place that is underperforming (otherwise they wouldn't want to get a new coach), with a good front office and ideally a promising young quarterback. I could see Tennessee being a possibility. Maybe Green Bay? If he could bring his own quarterback and GM (like he tried to do last time) maybe the Rams? If nothing else, he would look like a genius compared to Fisher.

I just don't want it to be the Colts, I'm sure getting rid of Grigson (who I hope gets a life-time contract with the Colts) would be a pre-condition, but I would still hate to see him there, Josh might be able to really improve Luck.

This is like "lets create a new headline when there isnt one" .Really pathetic. Nothing in mcdaniels quotes suggest that he clearly said he is moving on but still lacanfora has to say it categorically "“After years of hedging his bets and giving strong indications he was most likely to stay with Bill Belichick, McDaniels is prepared to move on if the right opportunity presents itself.”
Really sad state of making up news.

As expected.

Actually in this regard I feel like we are playing with house money since he was a= strong candidate in the past 2 off seasons. Opportunities were there, maybe not the best ones, I think it was smart from his part to learn more under Belichick, if he indeed gets a HC job, he would do much better now than 2 years ago. These Patriots teams from the past 2 or 3 years, lots of rookies and undrafted rookies making the team, veterans being cut or traded, this has been a total coaching hands on experience, all the coaches on the staff should be thankful for being part of this project.
Several things to consider on the possibilities of Josh leaving.

1. His experience in Denver was HORRIBLE. It was almost like BB's Cleveland experience with the press.

2. It was also very tough on Josh's young family. THEY weren't real happy in Denver.

3. His family LOVES living in NE. They have roots here, and to uproot them to move to a job somewhere else is something he is going to have to consider.

4. If he wants to be a HC THAT badly, he knows he can take over for BB down the road. So he can stay here and still know that being a HC is in his future.

5. Part of the problem for Josh is that he's seen the kind of authority BB has had, and how important that is to make it work for the long term. It is unlikely that he is going to get that kind of authority in most places.

That being said, I'd be OK with Josh leaving, though I'd rather he didn't. And he can take JG with him....IF he's willing to part with a couple of first's and 4th. ;)

There were rumors that McDaniels was going to go to Tennessee this past offseason with Jon Robinson being named the GM. I don't think he even interviewed though. One thing to keep in mind - Belichick always advises his coaches to look for stable ownership that would support them. Tennessee is a mess right now; the NFL might make the Adams Family sell the team due to ownership structure problems that they have not yet resolved. You typically don't see unsuccessful head coaches get 3 chances, so McDaniels really needs to pick his landing spot carefully.

There is no salary cap on coaches. If management thinks he is the heir, pay him HC money to stay as OC. If he wants a new challenge that bad, there is nothing that can be done.

Good point about the ownership mess in Tennessee, that would need to get resolved for that to be a good destination.

This wouldn't surprise me at all, frankly he's overdue and deserves another shot. I dunno if I'd take Jason LaCanfora's word on it being a near certainty, though.

If accurate this should not a surprise.

He was interviewing last year.

He turned down requests in 2014.

Good luck to him and hope he gets what he wants.

Him going wherever and Jimmy in tow would be his best situation.

Couple of things that were said that the media is ignoring to get a sound bite...IF the RIGHT opportunity presents itself. Josh clearly loves his job, loves the area, and is in a great situation right now. Incredible skill players and working with the GOAT QB again next week, with the best run organization in football. 2nd shots at being a HC are very rare and 3rd shots are unheard of so I am positive Josh is being very very careful with his decisions. Most teams looking for a new HC are the type of ****ty organization I am sure are crossed right off the list. The Browns, Redskins, and Lions of the league. The only type of job I could see appealing to Josh would be something like Cincinnati if they are tired of Lewis' mediocrity. Decent QB that could be coached up, an all pro WR and a generally underperforming team that just needs a few tweaks. Plus look at the job security, how many 8-8 seasons has Marvin Lewis survived? Short of that I think the Pro's of NE far outwiegh the Con's and Josh is going nowhere. As others have pointed out he does have a young family that loves the area so it's going to take a massive offer I do not believe he gets for another couple years.

Josh should be ready to succeed. He might be better off at a place with a proven GM. The Jaguars have a number of good young players.

He needs to finish this season without getting distracted.
That's a recipe for ending up like every other coach in the NFL. The biggest thing Bill has proven is the importance of total control of the system.

Not so fast on the Lions. They need to make a decision on Stafford and their GM is fmr Pats FO guy Bob Quinn.

Historically they are a fairly patient family with coaches and GMs that suck.

It's been a mini miracle he has stayed the last two summers.

With that said, anyone surprised a ratbird insider is the one breaking this? Laconfora has exactly zero contacts in New England.
