Patriots Agree To Terms With RB Donald Brown

at least Trump likes his name

Eh, he's okay I guess. I hope he's not getting more than the vet minimum and/or nothing guaranteed, because IMO that's all he's really worth. My guess/hope is that he isn't guaranteed much of anything yet, and the Pats are planning on addressing RB in the draft. Which would just make Brown insurance against the possibility that the draft board unfolds in a way that leaves the Pats without a good opportunity to pick a decent one.

Even then, I don't love the deal, as I'm not convinced he's a significant upgrade over James White, and White is really cheap.

OK is being way too kind, in fact SUCKS ASS is being way to kind.

I hate it. Blount is purely an inside the tackles power runner who is useless against good defenses and Brown shouldn't play for a good HS team. This is the worst I have seen this unit in the a Belichick era. I'm about as big an optimist as they get and I don't believe they can win a SB with this RB unit. I love Lewis but he is coming off of a no contact blown ACL and the rest of them are useless in the run game. I have zero confidence in this RB unit and believe they can't fix the OL if they are throwing 50 times a game. They are going to have to strike gold in the draft or this season could be a lost cause.

Can't disagree with much here.

Luckily RB seems to be a pretty "easy" position to draft relative to some others.

Meh...he's a camp body. Guess he's here to push Dion.

I'm sure they're not done at RB. Still think one or even two of Blount, Starks, Foster, Morris or a Draft Pick will be soon to come.

The argument is not if Brown is a bum. Hes a legit NFLer. Its that Brown is a waste of a 90 man slot here. Here is why.

Blount is a better runner and has power
Lewis is a better runner
Bolden has more overall value

With that said, Brown is a much better runner than White but better receiver in this offense? Debatable.

Develin is coming back but they obviously do not play the same position.

Pats need youth, power and speed in the backfield and a player who can create his own yardage on half the occasions he has the ball. Creating his own yardage is not a strength of Brown's

Its a depth signing which is fine but I'd be shocked and disappointed of he is on the roster in December.

I'd rather keep White and draft a 3 down RB who is a much better runner than Brown.

Strawman? People called the signing LAUGHABLE.
The guy is an NFL caliber player. He has been on a roster 7 years and been active virtually whenever healthy.
Laughable would be signing Tebow, or Ras I Dowling.
This guy will compete for a job, and has a track record that says he belong in the league and on the field as a back up. Teams need those kind of guys.

I really don't think people would mind were RB not such a dumpster fire at the moment.

Provided they make additional moves to shore up the position, which I'm sure they will, I can live with the signing.

Not as down on this signing as most here seem to be. With our current RB situation, he's probably got a spot on the 53 (could very easily be stolen by a rookie or later acquisition).

28, signed for over 3M annually 2 calendar years ago, former first round pick with some big games under his belt. He's only fumbled 3 times in his career and they were never recovered by the other team.

He has never been very good, and is pretty much the definition of a first round bust, but he's quite possibly better than all other healthy options on the roster.

Well we don't have Blount, and the 90 man roster is also to account for injuries.
Brown is a capable NFL RB. There is no reason not to have him in the mix.

I agree, I hope they find two really good backs in this draft. I'm of the belief that while the rookies had some problems last year the real problem with the OL was the lack of a real run game once Lewis went down. After that teams literally had no concerns about the Patriots run game and the passing game outside the hashes and it made them really easy to defend, and good defenses handled them pretty easily. They have to have a good run game those season or Brady is going to take a beating, I'm disappointed Belichick didn't fix this in free agency, I would have coughed up the money for Miller or Forte and really don't get him going for scrubs. Brown makes James White look like an ALL PRO.

Definitely agree that a Ridley/Vereen-type double dip appears likely.

If its more than 1/2 of the $3m he made last year its pure stupidity.

Reminds me of the Joseph Addai signing a few years ago. Longshot to make the team.

This will be our best signing of the offseason or I will quit posting on patsfans.com forever. You have my word on that.

Lets hope he actually doesn't quit during the conditioning test

Depends on what if anything is guaranteed.
If its 2mill salary with nothing guaranteed and we pay it to him because he made the team, then it was a good move.

If Brown makes the team that means they came up empty in the draft in acquiring a 3 down threat.

He most likely is an upgrade over White as a runner but not as a receiver.

With that said I bet they went with Brown b/c of his ability to play STs over burn outs like Foster.
