Patriots sign WR Chris Hogan

Brady is almost 39. Why can't we find him a playmaking WR who can literally go up and make a play even if Brady doesn't make a perfect throw? I am not talking about breaking the bank and signing a superstar, but an Emanuel sanders level talent, who by the way was signed for fairly cheap.

Why is that? If we are incapable of drafting a good WR then perhaps we need to change something in the front office to allow us to scout wrs better
Id suggest reading Bedard's article on the complexity of the Pats offense through the lens of the WR/TE.

I didn't say we are incapable of drafting a good receiver ... don't change what I said. I said drafting one who can step right in is not an option ... the offense is too complex. Not only is it too complex but said drafted player is not going to get 1st team reps in practice which makes it even harder for them to fit right in.

I don't know how other teams do it but the offense on this team is all about getting the 1st team reps in practice ... it's heavily weighed that way in terms of time - which makes sense because the offense is heavily dependent on timing which is why some good receivers come here and never fit in ... they never had to do it that way and how many do it that way in college ... very few if any.

So how exactly can we scout better for the draft ...
Which colleges are running precise timing passing routes with a future NFL caliber QB?
It's a best guess at best ...

Yes but 7.5 million? This guy has put up practice squad numbers.
That is not accurate. His last two seasons were not PS numbers.

You need to look at the market and study what he got and compare it to what his peers have received for contracts.

As an alternative, what did you want them to do?

Too much money. Great workouts sure, but can he produce on the field? He hasn't shown he can. We needed to go after a WR who can stretch the field, which will open up the underneath passing game. Hogan cannot do that. I don't think our offense is complete. One injury to gronk or Edelman and our offense becomes very mediocre.

A stretch the field receiver is a decent regular season concept ... a useless commodity in the playoffs.

Patriots fan here...they signed a WR..that's good news...will get a lot of looks at practice this summer. Hope he works out. Been a fan since the Pats first game...seen a lot of bullshyt in the past. The Belichick period has taught me to STFU and leave the job to the PROFESSIONAL who has taken this team from the shytdump to perennial contender the past FIFTEEN YEARS!!

For all you phuckin' "knower of things" "fans" that only post here to make yourself look like some special kind of all knowing always right "superfan", if the Patriots moves/nonmoves stress you so much, TAKE A PHUCKING FLYING LEAP or find another team to blabber on about YOUR supreme knower-of-things-ness.

Inflation, man.
Would love to really get in the mind of an old time NFL coach like Belichick at this time of the season ... seriously it's got to be so hard ... I can see him throwing up in his mouth a bit this time of year. They say senior citizens in Florida will drive an extra 10 miles to get that super low breakfast special price ... not because they cannot afford a $1 more ... it's just that they're too used to frugal.

4 Super Bowl trophies .... not a one of them with a high priced stretch the field receiver ...

Yet every freakin free agent period ... some members just cannot help themselves ... as sure as rain.

Its required reading for every Patriots fan who thinks every WR on the planet who can run a 4.4 and has been productive somewhere else can play here.

To the poster's point you wish it wasn't so complicated and that hypothetically would allow a greater pool of players not as experienced or as intelligent but off the charts athletically to excel here but that just isn't the approach they take here. Oh well.

Having a complicated system means being able to have a hyper successful and efficient offense every year. Having a barebones basic system that any idiot athlete can play in requires dumb luck to go the distance with, typically...

The thing is though, that it's not just "every Patriots fan who...", it's BB too. The WR's he drafts are fast 4.4 (or 4.3) guys who tend to be off the charts athletically. Athleticism does seem to be important to the organisation. Maybe that's where the disconnect exits and that the pool is too narrow to for guaranteed success. There are only so many smart WRs in the draft and only so many athletic WRs in the draft. Finding one that is both is always going to be tough.

Thats the trade-off that I endorse down to my bones. However they need more players that can get open quickly. That requires smarts and talent.
