So why do you watch if you're convinced that it's fixed from the top on down? What's the point?

I'm glad you started this thread because I forgot to put this in to my Idle thoughts edition this week.

I hate to point this out because it will only increase the paranoia that abounds here (unfortunately it would seem rightfully so.), but this stat is particularly aggravating. . I saw this written in some report after the Denver game. It turns out that after the Bronco game, the Pats led the league in yardage lost because of penalites with over 300 yards lost. What makes this more painful is that the team in 2nd place has less than HALF that number (146 IIRC)

This is one of those stats that doesn't show up on the game's box score. So in a game like Denver, when you looked at the box score, the 2 teams seemed relatively equal in, because the yardage gained and lost due to the penalty is never recorded.

It's funny... Every fanbase thinks the NFL front office and the refs are out to get him.
Broncos and Jets fans say NFL favors rules for Brady.
Patriots fans say... well, we all know that.
Every loss in the NFL is at least partially because the refs screwed them according to the fans.

Every team deals with bad calls. Each year, one team has to be the most penalized. Sometimes it's the good teams. Even with the refs, this team could've been 12-0 right now if they made a few better coaching decisions and a few better plays. At the end of the day, we could've still won and didn't. There is no excuse for the Eagles game AT HOME. Our "quality depth" at linebacker got gashed by CJ, our coaches decided to put a rookie in at punt returner in the snow… I can't be the only one who expected him to fumble it in this game as soon as I saw him back there.

Yeah, blame the refs a little for the Broncos won. It happens sometimes. But more than the refs, blame the coaches and players for that loss.

For the record, I'm not entirely positive the game is fixed from the top down. If I was, I'd quit watching altogether. That's why I don't understand why those of you that are convinced it is continue to watch. I've turned two games off this year because of calls and that alone made it unwatchable. The game may be fixed and it could also be that the refs are incompetent too (which wouldn't surprise me given who commish is). If I one day get verification that the fix is in or if I become convinced, that's the last you'll hear of old uncle Kontra around these parts. I can watch the WWE if I'm looking for a predetermined outcome.

I don't think it's fixed like WWE, but I think it's clear some at the top are putting their thumb on the scale. It's more of a game within the game, but for me it's ruining the actually game.

As to why I still watch, Brady and BB. We're watching history unfold, true greatness, and I'm not going to let the state of NFL deter me from watching that. Once they're gone so am I.

I will actually give you credit for this one. People need to stop insisting on saying "the fix is in" in regards of saying that we are the only team that ever gets bad calls. Watch other games around the league and you'll see we're not alone. ****ty refs are everywhere this year.

It's very understandable, but this last offseason has seemed to have gotten a lot of people around here very over-sensitive.

I don't think the game is fixed, but I do think that the reffing has been highly suspicious. The league has been out to get the Patriots, now more than ever, and I think the league office tweaked things (such as the OPI emphasis on TE) to be directed at them and probably have influenced refs to call the games unfairly. I don't think the league is flat out scheming with the refs, but I do think the league is trying to 'get the point across' that they don't want the Patriots to win.

Normally I would agree with you, but there are some anomalies that are occurring at an odd rate this year.

BTW- Stupid Jet and Bronco fans might ***** about Brady getting calls, but FACTS say the opposite. Annually Brady ranks in the LOWER third of QB's getting roughing calls. And when you point this out to them, they usually just ignore the ACTUAL truth when it conflicts with their own delusions.

Last time I checked, none of those teams spent an entire offseason and two weeks leading up to the Super Bowl watching the league office conduct a witch hunt against their team and its best player. And last time I checked, the league didn't have an ongoing lawsuit trying to tear down said player, who also happened to be an MVP frontrunner, which would be something of a public image disaster if he won.

I generally agree that blaming the refs is a loser's way of rationalizing defeat. But it doesn't take Albert ****ing Einstein to realize that we're dealing with a unique situation here, and also with a uniquely petty/vindictive/incompetent commissioner.

And oh yeah, just by the way, the competence of the referees themselves is also very much in question as part of the Brady case. The refs' union has a vested interest in the appearance that they did their jobs and that Brady was in fact guilty.

Don't shoot me, just asking a question.

But, do they refs throw the flag after the big play has happened or before/during (typically)?

Most likely we get the big plays because of the infraction not the other way around. Not seeing when the flag is thrown, though, it's tough to say.

I can think of several long completions to Keyshawn Martin that were negated by penalties committed by others, one IIRC a 50 yarder in the Denver game as well as a few others...

Might just add that other teams have not had one of their players singled out and made the point of emphasis for officials this season, resulting in numerous penalties against that player that have not been called in prior seasons and are not being called against other teams throughout the league in 2015.

Every team's fan base don't have the actual stats to back their claim... Honestly it doesn't surprise me the Pats lead in that category. The way the NFL* lied their way through deflategate makes it plausible.

Not fixed but heavily influenced. They can influence the game enough to alter the outcome.

It depends... They usually like to mix it up... keep people on the edge of their seats. And every once in a while, they will throw a flag during a potential game-winning play, only to pick it back up minutes afterward... for no reason.
