I think their defense is better than their rankings because they have become almost exclusively a sub package game plan team that concedes different things depending upon the opponent and situation. They will let a team run amok if it keeps the QB from beating them and they will give up the middle at times to take away the long ball. And as noted they give up a lot of garbage yards and points. This is a good defense that should be really good by the end of the season, and if they continue to play the way they did against the fish out will be really hard for anyone to beat them.

Agreed. Not just mostly sub package, but we are playing a lot less split safety, and going with a single high which allows more flexibility and strangely enough, has allowed less big plays.

This means that the Patriots have spent 30.1% of their games in garbage time,

That is simply not correct, and I've already given an example of how it's not. There was no garbage time, at all, in the Jets game, just for the most obvious example.

Your OP is WRONG because the season isn't over you moron. It's not even HALF-WAY.
The "stats" that matter are WINS and POINTS ALLOWED. Last I looked, the Pats are 7-0 and they are 8th with 17 PPG allowed.

BTW, Could you show me where your original post mentioned ANYTHING about 3rd down conversion rate or Red Zone Conversion rate? OH WAIT. No. You can't. Why? Because you added them in a vain attempt to hold on to your pathetic argument. OH.. And 3rd Down % can be misleading. The Texans currently have the BEST 3rd down Defense allowing only 26 of 89 attempts. But they're considered the worse defense in the league. The Titans, Browns, Chargers, and Seahawks are also top 10 in 3rd down defense, but also all have losing records..

The Pats Opponents have had 66 possessions. They've resulted in 15 TDs (11 pass/4 rush) and 8 FGs. So, opponents have scoring on 23 of 66 possessions..

Furthermore, there are 12 teams that have only played 6 games. So those teams have an advantage, currently. In fact, until all the teams have had their bye, the stats will be skewed each week. In fact, after this week, some teams will have played 8 games, while most will have played just 7..

I didn't ignore anything you said. You being pleasantly surprised is irrelevant to the conversation. The rest of your post was blathering BS. I chose what was relevant. The bold-faced LIE that you told. Your CLAIM that people were ignoring stats. No. They weren't. They were going with the ones that matter. They weren't like you, cherry picking ones and thumping your chest as if you entire argument was correct..

Remember you said "They will be in the 20s in everything but scoring" All but 2 of their stats are better than that already and the Defense has improved each week..

My OP is wrong because the season is not over? "Will this defense be top 10?" implies that it's speaking of the future. It does not say "this defense is not top 10." It says "will." This also includes red zone D and third down D. It includes everything about the defense -- every little thing.

That's a really silly reason to call me wrong. In fact, if i'm wrong because the season isn't over, then you're wrong because the season isn't over too. How can you make statements about this defense but I cannot? If I cannot say this defense is not top 10 until the season is over, then you cannot say it is.

Sad you have to call me a moron because of your flawed and pointless argument there. I guess that level of stupidity can't be blamed entirely on you, your parents should have raised you better. Instead, they've raised someone who gets angry, TYPES every OTHER word IN caps to express said anger, and attacks people on message boards for not agreeing with his opinion.

It's okay, we're all going to make it brah.

So if every single category isn't top ten, you're gonna claim victory?

The team stresses playing a full 60 minutes. Even in blowouts, BB has gotten upset about the team not finishing. Happened after the Bills game. Lots of talk about garbage time for a team that tries to play 60 minutes. We've given up big plays in garbage time too, when the point of garbage time is to limit big plays and give up short plays.

If the average of every category is out of the top 10, if the defense falls apart in the playoffs, or if one major injury derails the entire D and shows the lack of depth at LB or CB. The eye test works too, although they've done pretty well from what I can see so far.

So which is it? If every category is out of the top ten, or only one? Or something in between? It would be nice if you defined your terms a little more definitively. You might not get so many people arguing with you.

Your OP offers a fairly poor argument @Interception. In fact, it doesn't really offer an argument. I dare say that's why people are taking you to task especially given the actual performance of the D.

There is a difference between giving up 19 unanswered for a team to pull within 5 with 4 minutes to go than allowing an 80 yard drive for a TD when you are rushing only 3 and there is a minute or two left in the game and you are up 13+ ponts.

By "lack of depth at LB" do you mean lack of character development in a fanfiction novel or something? Because that's the only way that statement isn't batshit insane.

Freeny and Mayo and 2nd rd pick Jon Bostic are backing up perhaps two Pro Bowl line backers with Collins perhaps an All Pro and we dont have LB depth???? Then you have Fletcher on the PUP and Flemming and Martin on the PS

Not to mention the fact that Ninko can easily take snaps at the LB position especially when you have Sheard to step in.

Yeah, I am going to go ahead and disagree with you on that "no depth at LB" thing. That aint good dude.

Toss in the fact that we only play two at a time, most of the time, and it's just...

Yeah.

This thread ought to go in the Patsfan HOF...if only for how terribly wrong the OP is turning out to be lol

What is worse is that he can't admit he is wrong and is digging his hole deeper.

Maybe we all learned something.

Interception learned that nickle is the new base maybe?
We are learned that Interception cant admit he was wrong, is either a troll or insane.

updated thru today

Jets 307 yards per game allowed (229 pass yards allowed), 19.8 ppg
Pats 346 yards per game allowed (249 pass yards allowed), 19.0 ppg

Pats should be in 7th place points allowed now. They will be in 6th if either GB or Denver hang a lot of points on either team.
