I think this is possibly a worse signing than Edgar Rentieria.

I know, I know, that is pretty bold, but here me out......

Imagine you take a guy that has been in the big leagues for 8+ seasons and someone told you that........

1.) he reached 100 RBI only once in his career, and it was exactly 100
2.) he has no sense of team loyalty, the highest bidder will get his services
3.) and brings serious health concerns

......and you want to pay him more money than your star player DAVID ORTIZ?

I've always thought this was crazy.

I thought it was a bad signing during the offseason, and his performance thus far has only magnified it.

As much as I agree he seems to be a bust, his recent slump clouds just about everything.. IMO think we have to wait until the end of the season to see what he has done, how many games he has played.. I am skeptical, but a lot of these guys have not hit their stride yet.

while I agree that a lot of the guys have not hit their stride, there is nothing that JD Drew can/will do this year that will warrant him being paid more than Big Papi.

.
i didnt like the drew signing either .i wanted nixon back.but i think we have to wait and see what drew does .its still to early and hes still adjusting to a new league.the rentieria signing wasnt a bad move even though i would have liked to see o cab come back .the redsox were to impatient with edgar .he had injuries in 05 and hes been playing great for the braves .i think hes hitting close to 340.

Play right field??

Its not fair to look at JD's salary relative to Papi's. Papi was spinning his wheels with the Twins to the point that the Sox planned to have him back up Jeremy Giambi when they first acquired him. Then he turned into the most feared hitter in all of Baseball. Maybe he thinks there's something in the water:D and will work cheap to stay near it?

JD Drew was a terrible signing before it happened, as was Lugo. Drew's never played more than 140 games in consecutive seasons. I'd have signed Nixon and worked more AB's for Pena who is rotting away. As for Edgar/Lugo, the Sox never should have left Cabrera go. Teams like the Redsox and Yankees can afford to make mistake signings like these since they have the money to rid themselves of such mistakes. Drew & Lugo are lucky right now because the Sox are 13 games up and cruising. Imagine if they were in a tight race. Ouch.

it's also not fair to compare salaries because when Ortiz was signed 13M meant more than it did when drew signed. the free agent market of this past offseason can't be ignored.

Drew has been awful. Hopefully he turns things around. We're getting to the point in the season where you have to worry about him.

as for the original points, RBI are an awful stat and his lack of them is directly related to point #3 anyway. Also, no matter how badly fans have wanted it, he's never been a traditional slugger. He had good, but not great, power. The fear is that he has degraded to "moderate power," or even worse.

as for point #2, get a clue about sports. for every curt schilling or tim wakefield who knows he's set for life and has other concerns there are a dozen guys concerned first and foremost with money. Two of the biggest 2004 heroes (Foulke and Manny) came to Boston for money and nothing else.

as for point #3, i'm with you. worth noting is that he admits to not taking care of his body in his youth, his only injuries the last few years have been of the freak variety (getting hit by a pitch in the wrist) and you can't really blame him for that, and he's been healthy so far.

Count me in on the "Dump Drew" parade.....again.
They should put Pena in but his glove sucks.

Yeah, Yeah.... I hear ya fella. Nothing bites my balls quite like a team thats fuking .700 approaching 1/3 of the way through the season  .

Lugo and JD are ho-hum so far, BFD. Lets wait and see how the season plays out. You ain't paying directly, so sit back and enjoy the ride for the time being.

When they signed him, I said he would be a good #5, but he would be a disaster if he was meant to replace Manny at #4.

It appears I was overly optimistic of his abilities even in that #5 slot.

I think he fits well in the two hole with his talents. He's got speed, a high OBP, and handles the bat real well. What's the BFD is right though, they're 15 games up and a lock for the playoffs.

The Renteria Signing wasn't bad he just wasn't healthy. I bet they would like to have Renteria back. He leads Atlanta in average, runs, and hits, and went 4 for 5 today with 2 runs. Drew sucks and knew he did, and couldn't believe the Sox were wasting so much money on a mediocre player. I'm not suprised by Drews play, and the Drew signing is way worse then the Renteria signing.

Ok, for the JD Drew sucks and was an awful signing crowd:

131

267 (36 ABs)
92
122
162
110
133
158
148
125
82 (2007, so far)

The first number is his career OPS+. The others are his individual season OPS+s. This doesn't even consider his defense, which is great.

Fell free to say he's sucking so far this year, but acting like his current state of crapiness was predictable or is likely to continue is silly. The guy has been very good his entire career and judging him based of on 1/3 of a season is downright stupid.

JD Drew was ripping it up early in the season but lately not so much. My biggest complaint with him was his injuries. I remember there was also some question as to how he'd fare in Boston, given it's such an intense venue.
They're still coasting along as the best team in baseball so JD Drew's troubles aren't costing me sleep by any stretch.
He showed good stuff early on and there's still lots of baseball left to play. He may bounce back to his early form. Is he worth the money? We'll see what he's made of in September.

Put me in the Drew sucks crowd - and no, it's not "stupid" to say so after "just" one third of a season because even if his numbers get back toward normal over 140-150 games, he still will be the last guy you want coming up to bat with the game on the line! He seems as detached as possible from what's going on around him. A pop up with the bases loaded, Wang on the ropes, and my team just now tying the score? So what, he seems to say, I'll get another at bat - yeah, in the ninth when were down by six...

Drew's failure to deliver, again, in yesterday's game was another back breaker he's handed to his teammates. He virtually never comes through. Even slumping players like Lugo now and Manny earlier would provide key, rally extending hits (Lugo was 2nd or 3rd on the team in RBI for May). God forbid Drew hits a dagger in heart type of bases clearing double like his complete opposite Posada. Blah, Blah, Blah, all you want about how we're asking too much for this team to be doing any better, but every single game counts and we would have likely won or the rest of game would have at least been a real battle had Drew delivered a hit after Manny loaded the bases, with the score 3-3.

Drew stinks and is crazily overpaid. If Theo really is considering trading Lowell, he is out of his mind becuase the second half of the order will just tank if Drew is left to be main driver.

Here is what I'd like to see TeeToe do with the order right now (assuming Drew's hamstring doesn't keep him out, but of course it will)

Lugo - need his speed up top
Pedroia - never strikes out and has the right 'tude
Papi
Manny
Youk - think of the pitches Manny would see with a guy batting .350 behind him
Lowell
Tek
Drew - he'll go nuts down here where he's not counted on
Crisp

If you need any evidence that TeeToe reads this board, look no further. At 2:07 Saturday afternoon I laid out a change in batting order (see above) that would benefit the Sox - including the likelihood of JD Who sitting out the game (of course, that's like saying Lindsay Lohan will be seen in rehab). Bingo - there it was 2hrs later. Can somebody get me a gold star?:D

I think that I am happy with how the Sox are going, and if the offense gets going, while the pitching picks it up a little bit, then I think the sox will be in excellent shape. If Manny and Drew start hitting on all cylinders, then this offense is scary; I can't complain about a player when the BoSox have the best record in baseball.

I'm not sweating this small stuff.
