Scott Chandler

given that Gronk is the standard, Chandler will never look like he is all that

we have the best TE group in football........granted, we had that before Chandler, but there's no need to be negative

I'm willing to believe he's still coming to speed with a receiving corp and a QB that operate entirely differently than anything he's seen before. There's a big mental leap. But, if he wasn't showing them something during the week in practice, McDaniels wouldn't be featuring him in the passing game on Sundays.

I live in Buffalo and catch a lot of their games. Chandler does not have good hands. PERIOD.

There is more than one way to score a TD. No one seems to credit Dion Lewis' TDrun to the tremendous block that Scott Chandler and Gronk delivered for Lewis' TD run.

Lets give credit where credit is due. TEs ALSO block... not just catch.

I really think over the season that Chandler will be a key part of our offense being a 5/55 guy. We can have him and Gronk running seams and good luck to the LBs in coverage

Ok since Jim Kelly Buffalo hasn't had a good QB PERIOD!:p

That's the beauty of it.

They don't need to be "good". They just need to get to "a'ight", which is what I think they'll be at the end of the season.

Most importantly though, we need Scott Chandler to be tall. I'm hoping he can manage that.

He has had some good games against us in the past when he played for Buffalo. He had 6 catches out of 9 targets for 105 yards against us in game 6 last year. He was catching balls all over the field - Showing a combination of solid route running and good hands in that game.

as long as opposing defenders sometimes mistaken him for Gronk i am fine with him

Bring back Zach Sudfeld!

I think Chandler is the victim of unreasonably elevated expectations. For some reason, some people thought he was going to be the second part of the Boston TE Party 2.0, but the problem with that is that he just isn't a great player. He's pretty decent, maybe the 25th-30th best TE in the league. He's a serviceable if uninspiring TE1, and a good TE2. Big body, pretty good speed for his size, decent-ish hands, willing blocker. To date, he's performed pretty much in line with my expectations. If he's not meeting other people's expectations, IMO it's because those expectations were unreasonable from the start.

We've been hearing all summer about how he's supposed to be a lethal threat in the red zone. Then we find out his hands fall short not only of Gronk's level, but also of Fauria's and Vrabel's.

In his two games to date, they probably fall short of Vince Wilfork's as well. :)

So I'm definitely hoping for some improvement ...

That's a bit of an overstatement. The TE position in the NFL isn't that strong.

List of TEs I would definitely take over Chandler, on account of production and/or potential:

Gronk
Jimmy Graham
Jason Witten
Greg Olsen
Martellus Bennett
Travis Kelce
Delanie Walker
Antonio Gates
Dwayne Allen
Charles Clay
Vernon Davis
Coby Fleener
Jermaine Gresham
Tyler Eifert
Jordan Cameron
Kyle Rudolph
Jared Cook
Julius Thomas
Jordan Reed
Austin Seferian-Jenkins

That's 20 right there, and there's a few more like Marcedes Lewis that are just about on the same level. Granted, some of the younger guys still have a *lot* more to prove, but I'd still take their potential over Chandler's established ceiling if I had a pick of one or the other. And that's not trashing on the guy; I like Chandler and think he will add real value to this offense. He's a good player and the team is better with him on it. But there are plenty of young TEs that have a lot more promise than he does, and plenty of TEs closer to him in age who are better.

I think Chandler will prove to be serviceable. Some folks forget that Hernandez didn't have great hands. His drop rate was very efficient though..if he dropped you - you stayed dropped.

From PFF:

Drop Rate – The Bad

What does this mean for the drop percentage? Well, starting with the bad it’s that man Pettigrew who leads the way alongside Cincinnati Bengal Jermaine Gresham. Both have dropped 11.5% of passes thrown their way, 0.4% more of catchable balls than Kevin Boss in the third spot. Packers fans will be hoping last year was an aberration, with 12 of the 16 dropped passes of Jermichael Finley’s past three years occurring in 2011. That left him with the fourth-highest drop percentage.

Rank Player Team Catchable Balls Drops Drop Rate
1 Brandon Pettigrew DET 208 24 11.5%
1 Jermaine Gresham CIN 122 14 11.5%
3 Kevin Boss KC 117 13 11.1%
4 Jermichael Finley GB 147 16 10.9%
5 Ben Watson CLV 148 16 10.8%
6 Vernon Davis SF 224 24 10.7%
7 Fred Davis WAS 142 15 10.6%
8 Marcedes Lewis JAX 143 15 10.5%
8 Visanthe Shiancoe FA 153 16 10.5%
10 Aaron Hernandez NE 138 14 10.1%

I don't think his hands have been that bad. People seem to be laser-focused on those two throws in the end zone, but at least one of them was a pretty good play by the defender. Sure, he could/should have made the catch anyway, but that's what makes Gronk Gronk and Chandler Chandler.

Three throws to the end zone for me. His bobble on his TD catch made me nervous as well.
