Ask John Elway for some tips. Broncos have always been good at "cap management" so to speak.

Yeah but they don't win football games.

I could see them trading Chandler Jones. The writing is on the wall by the way they drafted. Two DE's and their biggest FA signing this year all play Jones position.

Flowers is a 3rd round pick. Grissom is a 4th round pick.. NEITHER has proven anything yet. There is no telling if Grissom will end up being a DE or an OLB.

Yes, Sheard is great insurance and should be able to spell either Ninkovich or Jones. But let's not get carried away.. Ninkovich is 31. He's got 1-2 years left. That puts Sheard in a prime spot to take over for Ninkovich.

Trading Jones hurts this team. Saying otherwise is foolish.. And the savings is minimal. 800K before someone else is added..

The biggest bang for their buck would be to sign Solder to an extension.

And it doesn't even make sense. They'd only free up $1.2m doing it.
Umm.. they'd free up less than that.. They'd free up around $800K and that is before signing someone to Jones' roster spot..

I think Solder will get an extension.
And yes, the 'cap is crap' crowd are again proven wrong.
I hope you're right. My fear is that they trade him for a 2017 draft pick.

The Patriots have $13,116,667 in cap dollars spent on Revis, Mankins, Arrington, and Wilfork. Our top 2 CB cap hits and top interior OL cap hit are from players not on our roster. That is why we have so little cap space.

Writing is on the wall with the way they drafted and they did it for a reason and it is to replace Jones next year who they will not be able to pay. Based off past history I could see them doing a trade before the start of the season. You should go back and listen to some of BB press conf. regarding the cap and they always like to have wiggle room or carry cap space into the next year.

Not saying I would want them to trade Jones, but based on what is on the roster I could see them doing it.

How do you know they won't be able to pay Jones? Do you know what the 2017 Salary cap is going to be??

Flip the first paragraph around, Grissom was the 3rd and Flowers was the 4th.

I agree with you on not trading Chandler Jones. I think people fail to understand that what Jones does for this team is very different than the roles of Ninkovich, Sheard, Grissom, and Flowers. Over the past 3 offseason he has consistently added weight, because they want to use him in a Seymour like capacity, they want to line him up at 3-4 RDE in a under formation, which aligns him over the LT. Outside of Easley there is not another DL who can do that effectively. The other OLB/DEs play a 7 or 9 technique and are not strong enough to 2-gap.

That Arrington contract is embarrassing. 3 mil to cut him? FFS.

2016’s cap is looking horrifying:

Tom Brady-$15,000,000.00
Jerod Mayo-$11,400,000.00
Devin McCourty-$8,000,000.00
Chandler Jones-$7,799,000.00
Dont'a Hightower-$7,751,000.00
Sebastian Vollmer-$7,023,834.00
Jabaal Sheard-$7,000,000.00
Danny Amendola-$6,866,666.00
Rob Gronkowski-$6,650,000.00
Julian Edelman-$5,156,250.00
Marcus Cannon-$4,816,668.00
Rob Ninkovich-$4,750,000.00
Stephen Gostkowski-$4,100,000.00

The ones in bold are likely to be reworked in some capacity (extension, pay reduction, or released) depending on the player.

Miguel does a brilliant job of keeping everyone up to date on the cap but I have to say that I'm not the least bit worried about any of this. The Patriots are generally conservative in their approach to the cap and they felt confident enough to go ahead and pay Gronk in advance and use that cap space now which indicates to me that they have plans to create whatever space they need to get through the season and any earned bonuses they incur during it. There's a lot going on right now but I would guess they have new deals and restructures in the works and will create more than enough space to get through the season and have good flexibility when next off season rolls around.

Cannon, Slater...

They need to trade Mayo before he shows signs of decline or suffer another season ending injury.

Some of you guys are funny. You complain that we never maximize the cap and therefore always don't maximize our chance to win a superbowl. Well, guess what we did? Relax guys. This is not BB's first rodeo. There's a lot of things we can do going forward. Trade/extend Vollmer/Solder. Cut/restructure Mayo next year. Trade Ninko next year. Not resign Chan Jones (do we get a complimentary pick?) Cut Hooman, Wendell next year probably. Extend hightower and Collins. Cap is also going to grow.

Pats need to draft Miguel or take him via eminent domain

"With their seventh-round pick the Patriots draft . . . [email protected], Cap Analyst." :p

"Boss, you wanted to see me?"
"Yeah. I just got this letter saying that you've been seized by eminent domain. You're now to go work for the Patriots."

He's already signed for 2016, so they have to trade him to get out of his 2016 $. After this year's trade deadline, at the next chance the Pats have to trade him, his 2016 salary will be fully guaranteed.

[Please note: I am not recommending the Pats trade Jones this year.]

SO where are all those who were screaming and complaining about the cut of Revis, positive that THEY could have fit him under the cap....Currently our top salaried CB is making 2 mill.....so where is the other 16 mil plus going to come from for this year....not to mention the contracts for Soldier,Hightower, and Jones next year,,,What would you have sacrificed this and every year of his contract....The argument was and is still totally without merit....Total BS...

It is not another 16 million. It is another 20 million. The only Revis way is a 2015 Patriot is if the Patriots had picked up his option making his 2015 cap number $25 million. I have inferred the previous statement from Revis' comments. The Patriots were never going to win a bidding war with the Jets. The Jets' adjusted cap number of $156.1 million is $11.5 million more than the Patriots adjusted cap number giving them more ability to afford a high 2015 cap number for Revis.

The whole Patriots could have signed Revis argument presumes
1.) that he wanted to reach a deal with the Patriots
2.) that he did not want to go back to the Jets
3.) that the Patriots and Jets were on the same level playing field.
