I actually didn't watch much of the game last night. Like Ken, I become less interested in the preseason every year. It really tells us nothing. I will point to two examples why.
As pointed out, in the second game of the 2004 preseason, the Patriots starting defense played so bad that Belichick forced them to play well into the third quarter and they still got beat badly by the Bengals back ups. The Pats went 14-2 and won the Super Bowl that season and that defense was one of the best of the Belichick era.
In 2008, Matt Cassel was monumentally bad in the preseason. I mean an absolute train wreck. Not only did people want him cut from the team, but people thought he was done in the league. People complained when the Pats didn't cut him. Then Brady went down in the first quarter of the first game and Cassel played pretty well as the Patriots' starter getting the Patriots to 11-5 and the first pick in the second round in compensation in trade.
