Whelp there goes the 5 TE set I was hoping they'd run.. I guess they could still do it with Solder.

How did the trade help the Patriots win the SB?

It gave them cap space to sign Blount, Ayers and Casillas.

Of course, it isn't up to me to demonstrate why it helped them win, it is up to you to demonstrate that the team would have done better with Mankins. You are also introducing an arbitrary restriction of the single year when two of the benefits, cap space and the draft pick, have as much or more value moving forward.

Bottom line is simple, the trade had no barring on the Patriots winning or losing the SB, so them winning should not be the basis for your viewing it as a success.

If Mankins had no bearing on whether the Patriots won or lost the super bowl, then getting out from under his massive contract is automatically a success.

I know it's still unlikely that he makes the team, but all jokes aside, what if Bequette is showing something at TE? He's an excellent athlete for a man his size, and should at least be a capable blocker. With Davis and Derby and Hooman, he has some good and/or talented players ahead of him. Even without Wright, the competition at that position looks to be one of the most interesting of camp story lines.

NM... back into hiding...

IMO..no man. It's Gronk, Chandler, Hooman, Davis and Derby on PS. I don't see Bequette playing above above any of them.....but JMO.

I agree it's a very long shot, I just am gonna have fun watching the position develop

I'm starting to think this thread should be changed to Manlove for Mankins. Move on.

Bequette moves up the TE depth chart!

FWIW the Pats signed two TEs today, also releasing Zach d'Orazio.

So then why trade for him in the first place? It's not like Wright's inability to block comes as a surprise to anyone.

They needed a receiver TE last year, they had no one behind Gronk other than Hooman who is a joke as a pass catching TE

He produced for them.. he didnt produce huge numbers or anything, but he produced 6 TDs, 250 yards and they got a 4th rounder out of it that they drafted our future LG with

I had them actually straight up cutting Mankins just for the cap relief because of all the moves they had to make soon, so getting anything for an over the hill LG is worth it.. Look what the Eagles just did with Mathis, they cut him and got NOTHING for him.. so to get a 4th rounder, 250 yards and 6 tds isnt awful.. its not great, but its not awful either.

Should be pointed out that the Eagles just released Evan Mathis, who makes LESS than Mankins and is, at this point, a much better LG.

They got nothing for him - zilch - and saved less against their cap. They won't even get a comp pick because they released him.

Trading Mankins saved the Patriots 6.5 million last year, which, I believe, is more than they paid for Ayers, Castillas, Branch AND Blount combined (and they'll also be getting comp picks for the first two, while the other two are still with the team).

The Patriots also have 14 million more dollars over the next two years, instead of an aging and declining interior guard. CAP flexibility is a good thing. A very good thing.

And they won the Superbowl. How can that not matter? They won it without Mankins and their OL performed well throughout the playoffs 9and against 2 of the top defenses in football).

Like I said earlier, I find it VERY hard to hate the Mankins trade, as much as I respected Mankins as a player.

I did not feel attacked personally, probably the wrong choice of words. I meant that you chose to go after the way I was making my point, rather than my point. In the above post, you argued points rather than just said "no" or "anyone can see that", the last of which was patently untrue, for I am myself someone.

As to the strawmen, staying on topic, not changing the subject and not implying anything extra is simply not making a strawman argument, no matter how many times you assert that it is. It's not.

Your arguments were of strawmen. I hadn't made the claim that Mankins getting injured didn't affect his play for a while, for example, yet you made that an argument of yours, as if I had. I also didn't compare Mankins to Vollmer with regards to age, value or position, yet you argued that. All I'd said was that Mankins had been the team's best OL for some time.

That's just the fact of the matter, no matter how many times YOU assert it's not.

Wright served his purpose. Trade value was worth it at the time. The Mankins LoveBoat has sailed. Move on.

Dam..i liked him...not like he was a big part but was a fan...but at TE we have plenty...Gronk and SC will be weapons in the RZ

There has to be more to this situation because otherwise I cannot see a reason to cut Wright at this juncture of the offseason. He did not cost much and he could have at least been someone who could have some trade value later in camp.

I would just like to point out that the Patriots still have the cap room to carry Logan Mankins cap number, so the trade was pretty much completely worthless.

I forgot if Mankins deal was up anyways this year or not.. but if he had more years on it, then it got the accelerated cap hit out of the way earlier by trading him away.

Its also only June, so by the time the season starts they could have signed other players to extensions using that cap space which I believe will happen for at least 1-2 players. They had no intention of carrying Mankins beyond this year, they wanted to move on and get younger along the offensive line and reallocate that monster salary cap hit to other positions.

They still got something out of the trade... a 4th round pick that they used, coincidentally, on a young Guard from the draft. They also got 6 TDs and 250 yards out of Wright so that is some production as well...

Oh yea, and they WON THE SUPERBOWL

Fred Davis worries me though. He has had a lot of issues in Washington and before that at USC with PEDs, DUI, domestic violence, and even being late for practices.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Davis_(tight_end)

It would be great if he did suddenly "get it" given his substantial athletic talents, and I'm HOPING for it for sure.

Very low risk since hes going to be the 3rd or 4th TE on the depth chart. They aren't relying on him to play any major role, so even if he acts up and they can him it won't affect anything all that much. They could go with 3 TEs again, especially since a position has to be cut to make room for the 3rd QB that they normally don't carry on the roster, at least until Brady's suspension is resolved
