How about trading Mayo to LB-starved 49ers

I don't know where people are getting the "too much talent at LB" or that I think it is some kind of problem we must resolve. I really don't look at it that way. It is great we have this amount of talent.

However when I look at the team and ask what is the better D.

Base -DL - Nink Easley Siliga Jones LB - Collins Mayo Hightower DB - Butler Chung McCourty Arrington
Nickel - DL - Shread Easley Siliga Jones LB - Collins Mayo DB - Butler Chung McCourty Fletcher Arrington

or

Base - DL - Shread Easley Siliga Jones LB - Collins Mayo Nink DB - #1 CB Chung McCouty Butler
Nickel - DL - Shread Easley Siliga Jones LB - Collins Mayo DB - #1 CB Chung McCourty Butler Arrington

Give me the 2nd option. I think that is the better defense. We can agree to disagree.

Oh, ok. I guess I just don't see where the #1 CB is coming from in the transaction. If you tell me that you can get a proven top-15 NFL CB for Mayo, sign me up! (A draft pick won't do it -- I'm not expecting a 1 CB to be available even at #32 this year.)

Now if we can not get a player that make it worth doing then don't do it. I am not saying give away a good player for a lesser player. I am saying if a fair trade is possible I would do it.

Where is Hightower in your preferred defense?

I didn't see Nink a lot as a 4-3 OLB in 2014. I'm struggling with that one.

You also could see some 3-3-5 config too. For that you may need 4 LBs

OK, a lightbulb just went off for me. I've been puzzling over how anybody could think we have "too much talent" at linebacker and can easily spare one, when I see precisely 3 linebackers on the roster who I have any confidence in. Now I get it: you see Ninkovich and Sheard as options at linebacker. I don't. IMO Nink has evolved into a clear DE, and Sheard even more so. (You do NOT want Sheard playing in space.)
The only type of LB that I see either Ninkovich or Sheard play is as standing ends like we used a lot against the Broncos in 2014 where they drop from time to time, but their coverage is more supposed to catch the QB of guard more than anything else. I also see them cover the RB like we have our ends do sometimes. But that doesn't make them real linebackers that could replace anyone of Mayo, Collins, or Hightower as I wouldn't want anyone of Ninkovich, Sheard, or Chandler Jones in actual coverage.

Well that is the rub really. I am pretty sure everyone would agree the right guy is worth trading Mayo/Hightower for but what is the right guy? What value is worth it?

Almost everyone on here would agree Mayo/Hightower are worth a top 15 CB.. Are they worth top 20? 25?

Depends on how much you value them.

Also how many draft picks are they worth? How high would they need to be?

Would I trade Mayo for the #1 pick overall? Yep. #5? Yep. #10? Probably. #15? Maybe #20? IDK.

How about a late 1 and a late 3rd?

How about 2 late #1s?

IDK if it can be easily answered. Each person has their own line and I understand if some want more or less than me.

I traded Hightower for the "#1 CB". I chose him cause Mayo's name is shorter so I could type it faster : P

I wouldn't even think about trading Hightower for a top 15 CB. Not a chance. That would by highway robbery by the team that traded the CB.

With a healthy Mayo we have the best LB corp in the whole NFL. Seeing how the best secondary in the NFL was just dismantled I'm hard pressed to also dismantle the LBs too.

Also SF has Bowman, Smith, Brooks, and Lynch they're hardly in desperate need of a LB. If they were they could sign McClain, Spikes, etc.

Yep I agree. It be a step back at that position. We would not be as good in the 3rd LB spot. I think that is pretty clear and no one should disagree there would be a cost to it.

I am curious. What do you think Mayo or Hightower is worth? Is it the same for both? What kind of deal would it take?

http://www.patsfans.com/salary-cap/?p=1354 may be helpful. Patriots could have Mayo on their roster for less for less than the dead money charge that would incur from trading him.

If he is healthy to be traded, then why trade him? For cap space? More cap space can be created by lowering his salary.

Actually, in Nickel, it's more likely to be:

Nink, Easley, Chandler Jones, Sheard, from left to right across the front.. Sheard was best playing on the weak side if I am not mistaken..

Amendola's 2015 cash decreased by $2.25m. Ninkovich's cash increased by $2.3m. Yet we hear that Ninko's deal done because of 89% cash floor.

Well like I said it would depend on the deal. I would need to think about what I would trade Hightower for. I am sure I would do it for 3 first rounders though.

There isn't a person on the roster I wouldn't trade for 3 first round picks hehe

You can throw our the "what if a LB gets injured card". I am not saying that wouldn't be an issue. It would be. I just do not worry about my backup LB situation when I have a chance to fix starting CB.

I think Belichick and Patricia would find plenty of ways to get all 3 onto the field though, its more to do with talent.. Mayo is one of the best players on the entire roster, so with him going back into the middle, they could move people all over the place.. They wouldn't need to go 4-2-5 with Collins, they could get away with using him in pass coverage on a 4-3-4 look.. he was covering Wes Welker with success last year.. I think they were doing more 4-2-5 simply because they had more talent at defensive back than they did at LB, but in 2015 I think the opposite will be true so they'll try to get their best players on the field

I wouldn't trade Mayo for Keenan Lewis because Mayo is a better linebacker than Lewis is a CB, so unless the Saints were throwing in a nice draft pick to sweeten the deal it would be an overall downgrade of talent
