Why is it that the only time someone chose us over another team this year itwas a guy who plays a position we were just fine at? I like Scott Chandler but I can't say he fills any need.. meh.

We were free agency winners last year, and we won the SB.

Actually, a lot of people felt that the Tampa Bay Bucs were the free agency winners last year. They handed out huge contracts to Alterraun Verner, Michael Johnson, Clinton McDonald, Anthony Collins, Evan Dietrich-Smith and Josh McCown.

Of course, any sane football fan knows Josh McCown is a poor starting NFL QB and Lovie Smith is a bad coach so all they were able to realize is free agency winner.

You can't honestly believe the Pats were fine at #2 TE.
Is #2 TE suddenly a huge need? Is a #2 TE more important than running back, OL, receiver, corner, defensive tackle?

It would be if TE1 gets injured.

Filling needs isn't as static as "This is our #1 need, we will fill this first -- any way possible." You have to take into combination talent available, cap space, available, free agency and the draft.

So basically what I'm saying is, In Bill We Trust.

I'll be suprised if Johnson signs here.
Been a pretty underwhelming off season for the pats thus far.

Can't agree with you here. After QB, Chandler was my top choice precisely because it fills such a big need.

Was Scott Chandler the absolute best player available either? Again I like the guy but..

Yeah, the "NE won free agency last year!" rhetoric is entirely hindsight. Prior to Revis' arrival, people were just as angry as they are now. Even with him, I could wallpaper my office with articles chiding NE for not keeping up with Denver.

Yes it is.. Bill is trying to diversify the offense...maybe give brady more big options in the red zone to avoid some of the mental lapses he made last year at the end of the half. Finding a defense that can match up with gronk and chandler is impossible. He will make a huge difference in our red zone offense

This would only make any sense at all if the Patriots could only pick one position to improve in free agency.
But those five needs that I listed remain unfilled!

What the hell does "absolute best player available" have to do with anything?

I have a feeling unless he has Superbowl to trump money, location, playing time he will be a Charger.
Would love to be wrong.

Okay, but free agency isn't done yet and there's a draft. Throwing big money at JAGs who are maybe marginally better but significantly more expensive than the JAGs already on your roster is what a lot of teams do in free agency; see how that worked out for the aforementioned Buccaneers.
