If they knew beforehand, why didn't they just call the Pats and say we hear you may be playing with underinflated balls and if you are, you better stop? Who wants to bust people?

You know that answer to that question.

This never would have happened under Tags or Rozelle.

Actually, it probably is. Rule 2, Section 1 of the Official Rulebook (as opposed to the Operations Manual) defines the ball and says, among other things, that the ball is to have a pressure of 12.5-13.5 PSI.
Doesn't it say when they are given to refs or something? Surely they would not say "during play" that would be impossible. Actual I'm not sure they wouldn't crucify someone for failing to achieve the Impossible.

Adam Schefter on Michael Kay: "The NFL is having a hard time implicating anyone in this, any fall guy. I don't know if they will ever find someone responsible. Therefore, the NFL might just decide to fine the Patriots as an organization without any proof of any wrongdoing."

If that happens, I'd be livid.
Yes, fine the Patriots and label them cheaters for ****ING NATURE AND THE LAWS OF PHYSICS! **** YOU NFL, **** YOU!

I'm sick of talking about this. Maybe when I wake up this time the NFL will have released the report and we can move on.

Schefter citing the obvious

@NEPD_Loyko: "If this was the Titans or Jaguars or Steelers or Raiders this whole thing would not even register on the richter scale" -- @AdamSchefter

I like Schefter, he's breaking stories left and right without the ********. Him and Reiss might be the only two sensible people left at ESPN.

The NFL is praying for the most exciting Super Bowl ever that Seattle wins. During the national euphoria of the Pats losing they can release a statement saying it WAS that ***** Mother Natures fault and alls well that ends well.

God I hope we win this one. I might want this more than the 2011 one.

Liked schefter since his NFL network days, ESPN hasn't corrupted him yet

Yes indeed, always been impressed by Schefter. It's kind of reassuring to see that he is not on the "Pats are guilty" bandwagon. He has been reporting for over a day now that the NFL doesn't have much of anything. I trust him more than any insider.

Right -- Goodell drives this crap. If this happened 10 years ago, it wouldn't even have been a story.

I guess this won't be the year that the Pro Bowl finally gets good ratings then, since no one even remembers it's happening anymore with all this inflation nonsense.

It'll be interesting to see so many aholes with egg on their face if the NFL comes out that there's nothing to see here, maybe our referee's didn't measure the psi before the game blah blah

This is my dream. This is my prayer.

Late next week we learn that the reason there has been such an extensive investigation is because the balls were planted in a hair-brained scheme concocted by a drug-addled Jim Irsay after a long weekend chasing the dragon with a Vietnamese prostitute. Brady and Belichick are completely exonerated but are radio silent leading up to the game, trying to regain their focus during the media firestorm. The NFL enjoys a publicity arc the WWE had only in its wildest dreams. Commercial rates for the Super Bowl approach $10 million per 30 seconds. The high point of the pregame broadcast comes when 150 reporters cram into a 20 by 20 room to witness the pregame ball testing with experts to comment on the scuffing and wear of the balls and speculating about the rituals that quarterbacks go through to prepare these sacred game balls. There is Brady worship enough to make the longtime Pats fan wince; Gruden may have to change his trousers; every time Collinsworth calls Brady "a class act" you have to take a drink. During the game, the Patriots roll out completely new looks; I'm thinking a hybrid wildcat with Edelman and Blount in the backfield with Brady. Gronk used primarily in a decoy/enforcer role to contain Chancellor and Thomas while Wright and Lafell own the flats. We have not seen the last Nate Solder touchdown. On defense: Collins, Hightower, Jones and Nink shut down the read option like mind-readers. Branch, Siliga and Vince meld to become an impenetrable wall of meat for Lynch to grind against. Pats win by 28 going away. After the game, amidst all the confetti and hoopla, the Patriots make no comments, walk off the field and deny media contact, requesting the trophy be mailed to them at Patriots Place. Robert Kraft stands alone on the podium with his good buddy Roger Goodell.

Please Lord, if you are a just and loving God, make it so.

I hate Goodell but you are wrong here. Kravitz posted this on Twitter around midnight Sunday. By 8am Monday this was already out of control. The issue is the source who told Kravitz. If this all happened out of sight they could have come to the science answer and put this to bed. The world has changed dramatically in 10 years and Kravitz started this at the behest of the coke king in imagine.

I can see this scenario: Nfl cant prove the pats deflated the balls and fine with 25k and a 6th round pick, that will prevent the patriots from another tom brady with the pick 199.

They won't be able to even fine them. There is nothing at all to base it on. This is a reffs screw-up unless proven otherwise.

Schefter is who Jay Glazer wishes he was and is bitter about not being.

Kind of like the relationship of Steeler fans to Patriots fans.

I'm not wrong. Do you think the likes of a Rozelle or Tagliabue would've convened this overkill of an investigation into such a minor prospective transgression and reinforced all this "integrity of the game at stake" nonsense? The commissioner has latitude in setting the tone on such matters. Goodell has a checkered history of inappropriate reaction -- way too much or way too little. His compass is off.
