Chandler Jones & Akeem Ayers

I think this forum over rates Chandler.
He is a good DE, not an elite DE nor verging on elite.
I saw him fail to pursue on several run plays early on the season, plays you see a Ninko or whomever chase after. He disappears sometimes and sometimes in big games.
He is not someone like McCourty or Revis who are elite level. Few are. Again, I'm speaking to the over the top expectations of many here who short out over any critique.

As to yesterday, I thought he played about as well as could be given the blatant "collaring" by the Ravens OL. Kept up the pressure but as in many games made none of the plays that distinguish an impact player from a competent starter.

I think most people have missed the point of the OP. Its not about criticizing or defending Chandler or Ninko, its about the legitimate question of WHY or why not Akeem Ayers didn't get any run with the regular defense, even if it was to give the guys a blow, or provide a change of pace.

The guy has been productive in several games this year, yet for some reason can't get on the field for even 10 or 15 back up snaps. Is he injured? Hasn't he practiced well? Isn't he studying well or working hard? We all saw Ninko and Chandler run out of gas chasing Manning around in the 2013 AFCCG and commented on the need for finding a legitimate #3 outside rusher. After Buchanon went on the IR, we THOUGHT we found the answer in Ayers. But for some reason, evidently not.

I completely agree. Chandler is more than good enough to be a starter, but not bad enough that you should be looking to replace him with someone that could be elite. I don't think he is contract extension worthy, however at this point in his career but I'm still happy to have him as our starting RDE.

When the time comes I'd extend him in a similar style that we extended Ninko plus $ allowing for cap inflation.
but by that time, perhaps he'll bloom into the player many of us hoped he'd be.
Let's see how a healthy injury free C Jones does next year.

Chandler is going to cost a lot more than Ninkovich. In my opinion he will be absolutely worth it. He got held constantly last night and still brought pressure.

At this point i don't think CJ is the impact rusher we need. Ayers has earned time imo.

Jones was almost as bad pass rushing yesterday as Ninkovich usually is.

Maybe we could get Chandler and Ninko some help. I looked at the 29 4-3 Defensive Ends that had 5 or more sacks on the season which covered 16 teams. Ninko was the only one that played more than 1000 snaps and had the highest percentage at 93.8%. C. Jones in 10 games and 8 starts played 52.3% of the snaps. If he would have been healthy I have no doubt he would have topped the 1000 snap mark as well. Just sayin they may need a break or two.

DEFENSIVE END

Chandler Jones -- 77 of 77
Rob Ninkovich -- 76 of 77
Akeem Ayers -- 1 of 77

Is it just me, or is anyone else disappointed with Chandler's play last night? He was facing an UDFA rookie LT and really could've changed the game around for us. 100 year old James Harrison was giving this LT fits, what's the deal?

Could any argument be made to play Ayers over him? I'm still shocked Jones didn't go off last night.

Also, Ninkovich was facing a 4x All-Pro OL in Marshal Yanda. I think he deserves a pass.
Yanda is 4 time all pro guard not tackle.

That's kind of a stupid statement as Ninkovich wasn't against Yanda every down.

Next time C Jones shows up in a playoff game will be the first time he showed up in a playoff game.

Most overrated current Pats player.

I am super disappointed, especially since I legitimately feel Ayers played just slightly better and was a more consistent disruption than Jones. I really like Jones a lot, but I really also feel like he is not consistent enough (not counting the plays when he's being held . . . which always seems to be the worst against B-More). Anyway, next week is a great week for Ayers to be more involved. If NE does not get pressure on Luck, it will be a long day for the secondary again.

I think ayers and jones need to be on the field on 3rd and long and lets not forget James Harrison maybe old but he was once DPOY so lets give jones a break his only like 3 weeks back from a hip injury and the rest of the pats DL other then wilfork sucked as well

I posted something somewhat similar. I don't know if I'd take it so far as to use the word "most" myself, but he's pretty high up there. The guy does make some plays, but I don't think he's a consistent force yet. Maybe he will become that, as we almost have to give him a pass this season because of the hip. Let's see what he can do in the remaining playoff games and next season. He has the gifts and seems to possess the passion and drive to be great. I'm not anywhere close to writing him off.

where did all this hate

So now all this hate comes out?

What will it take for you guys to realize that Jones is likely playing hurt right now? Look at Jones earlier this season before injury compared to right now and tell me he looks like the same player.

I swear it seems like half of the people in this thread forget that the injury even happened.

I honestly think Arrington and Chung had better games than Revis and Browner last night.
Chung got abused early but played much better as the game went on. Arrington had a great game, perhaps the best of his career. That Revis PI was garbage, but he did get beat for a TD and that hold came at a bad time.

I was disappointed to not see Ayers more, I'm beginning to think Jones is overrated. At this point of his career he should be dominant and he clearly is not.
I feel the same way about Mayo too. It would be nice to have him this year though.. to see if he would have had a pro bowl season. Chandler is playing ALOT lighter. He looks skinny out there.

I'm not sure what's going on here. By Kyed's numbers, Jones had 2 of the Pats' 3 hits, 8 of the 20 hurries, and 10 of the 23 total pressures. He also would have drawn multiple flags with any competent official. So we're blaming the guy who was by far the most productive pass rusher for not doing more? How can a player be bashed this much when he was so obviously the closest thing they had to a solution?

We are seeing a chandler jones that is not fully healthy. He lacks burst, he lacks power and he lacks the ability to anchor.

Ninkovich is clearly run down from all the snaps.

This game against Indy with luck passing 80 plus percent of the time is a perfect game to get ayers and Moore some reps and some rest for jones and ninkovich.
