Is there anyone in the world who thinks he is a bust?

He just needs to work on consistency. It's exciting to have an lb on the Pats with his abilities.

It's hard not to love this kid. I'm gonna buy a 91 jersey next week.

[Post edit: Woops, didn't see the already existing thread on this - - merged in]

This is rare territory for a BB public quote about one of his current players:

http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/new-.../belichick-on-jamie-collins-lucky-to-have-him

".......
An energetic Belichick raved about linebacker Jamie Collins, whose contributions to the Patriots in his second season have been invaluable.

“Look at the Jamie Collinses, it’s not like there’s like two or three dozen of them in the draft every year,” Belichick said. “We’re lucky to have one.”

Belichick indirectly compared Collins to Hall of Fame outside linebacker Lawrence Taylor, based on each player’s impressive athletic abilities......

“There’s Lawrence Taylor, the prototype for an outside linebacker, where’s the next Lawrence Taylor?” Belichick said. “These guys don’t grow on trees.......”

His ceiling is so high. He has the potential to be the best in the league no question

when the pats Drafted him I seen him as a good coverage LB and a OK pick I did not think he would turn into a Patrick Willis type player in his 2th year

A poster on this board has said he was a terrible pick, we had no need at his position, and he is at best a decent 3rd down cover LB who cannot take on blockers or tackle.
I wonder where that poster is and if he'll ever admit he was completely wrong.

If Collins plays for an SEC team instead of an 0-12 C-USA dumpster fire, where does he go in the draft with his measurables? Top 10?

Also, where would he go in a re-draft?

Tough to find a lot of names you would choose over him.

I'm sure if one were to search the archives one would find many Collins is a wasted pick/bust etc type posts.

All that was required to appreciate Collins' athleticism was watch him play a handful of times. His biggest barrier to being elite was learning the defense and really the position as a whole. There's a lot of things happening at linebacker, especially at the NFL level. Now that he's understanding the position and the defense he's allowing his athleticism to flourish. He is the archetypical defensive chess piece in his second year in the league. In another two years he will be to linebacker what JJ Watt is to defensive line and Gronk is to tight end. There's four guys in the league with transcendent positional talent right now and two of them are second round draft picks on the Pats and under 30. But yeah, Belichick can't draft.

Who's the other one?

Jamie Collins is what happens when a pick like Tavon Wilson or Duron Harmon works out.

Man, it must really be killing Bears fans that the Pats took Chandler Jones and Jamie Collins right after the picks where they took Shea McClellin and Jonathan Bostic.

As far as how Collins is panning out relative to the rest of the '13 class, I think he's top 10 for sure. Hard to say much beyond that, lots of good defensive players in particular, plus a couple of awesome interior linemen (Frederick, Warford)

Gronk too. Let's imagine a world where Gronk re-injures his back as a rookie. After all, that was was a widely acknowledged risk, and pretty much the only reason why he fell to the 2nd round when guys with half his talent routinely go in the 1st. I'm sure posters here would have had a ton of restraint in acknowledging the such a risk was warranted due to his unlimited ceiling. He definitely wouldn't have become a punchline on par with Ras-I Dowling, and clear evidence that Belichick is a failure as a GM.

As a general rule, I'm fine with picks like Dowling and Tate because they produce an occasional Gronk or Vollmer. I'm fine with picks like Wilson and Harmon because they produce an occasional Collins. These guys are so good now that it's easy to forget that the Collins, Gronk, Vollmer, McCourty, and Jones pick were all widely panned at the time.

Yep. The problem is that people remember Bethel Johnson, Ron Brace and Chad Jackson more. Plus, you miss more as well thus making the draft a ridiculously innacurate science which is why BBs philosophy is to amass as many picks as possible.
