Darryl Stingley dead at 55...

Wow. RIP Darryl Stingley. I just read his memoir a month ago, and he was one of the strongest individuals I have ever heard of. He had a real drive and determination. I agree with the poster who said his body became a prison; I hope he finds peace and solitude in heaven.
.

I completely agree! From everything I read about Stingly he was an incredible person. He NEVER was bitter and held nothing against Tatum. He was at peace after the injury and is fully at peace now. He was just an incredible man.

The way you lived your life has been a light to many Darryl. God Bless

I was a kid when Stingley played for the Patriots. Not living close by, I used to write the players and asked for autographed photos. Pretty easy...the player signed a photo and the team mailed it.

Darryl actually took the time to write me a little note. He was the only one who ever did that and I really appreciated it.

RIP Darryl, you're a class guy!

I don't think this is neccessarily a sad thing at all. I believe death is a beginning and not just an end. In Darryl's case I also believe it was a release from a body that became a prison.

I hope Jack Tatum also finds some true peace about what happened.

You are at a higher level of enlightenment than I, and I say that with admiration. I too believe that death is a beginning, but Darryl Stingley was doing wonderful things with his life and was still a young man, and I wish he could have continued doing those things for a longer time before he went to meet his Maker, but that is not for us to decide.

I am also afraid that I still cannot forgive Tatum, since he has never done anything but play word games around his accountability for what he did.

As for any "release from a body that became a prison," I think only Darryl Stingley could have made that assessment. It is not for me to judge.

I remember that game
My best wishes to the Stingley family

A very sad day for Patriot nation. Rest in Peace Darryl.

The Pats really need to do something to honor former players ASAP. Some sort of ring of fame or something. Darryl's name should be there.

Rest in Peace Mr. Stingley.

RIP D. S. #84.

Rot in hell J.T.

I would be extremely dissapointed if we did not have Darryls name or initials embroidered into the uniforms this year or a sticker on the helmets.

He may have ended up as one of the best Patriots WRs ever if not for that horrific hit.

God Bless Darryl..We will miss you and may you rest in peace and hope you will be catching some passes again up there in heaven where no one has disabilities.

This years 2007 team is for you Darryl,May we take it all the way in your memory.
:rocker:

Respect. Stingley found something positive in a tragic situation. I can't say that if I was dealt that hand, I could do half of what he did after being injuried.

It is sad that in death, we realize what a great individual we lost and reflect on his life. Individuals like Stingley deserve our admiration in life as much as in death.

It isn't difficult to resent Jack Tatum for delivering the hit that paralyzed Stingly. I wish nothing good for Tatum and feel nothing for his problems. I wish him no wrong, but feel he deserves no good. May regret weigh heavy.

Mr. Kraft is the best owner in the NFL. He is generous, values loyalty and people of high character. There are very few people of better character than Darryl Stingly. I am sure Mr. Kraft will honor him appropriately.

Oh agreed completely. And I've heard Jonathan say they are debating what to do. My point is Darryl's passing gives the need for a way to honor Patriots of the past more urgency.

He was a class act not to be ruined by bitterness and anger and self-pity. I don't understand it myself.

I hope the Pats send a large entourage to his funeral as a show of respect. He was a high class guy who suffered tragically.

RIP my friend.. RIP

I wonder what Madden will say???? I really believe it changed Madden's life...in many ways..they were quite close...
I agree I wish I could say anything at all good about Tatum.....can't...

DEATH be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadfull, for, thou art not so,
For, those, whom thou think'st, thou dost overthrow,
Die not, poore death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleepe, which but thy pictures bee,
Much pleasure, then from thee, much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee doe goe,
Rest of their bones, and soules deliverie.
Thou art slave to Fate, Chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poyson, warre, and sicknesse dwell,
And poppie, or charmes can make us sleepe as well,
And better then thy stroake; why swell'st thou then;
One short sleepe past, wee wake eternally,
And death shall be no more; death, thou shalt die.

- John Donne

I can still recall thinking, as a young lad, that Stingley/Vataha was the best wide reciever corps we ever had.

I remember when the Pats drafted him in the first round in '73 out of Purdue. I had no idea who he was! (Then again, I was 7, and just becoming a Pats fan, so I didn't know a lot of players!)

I believe I read somewhere he was inducted into the Purdue Hall of Fame.

I DO recall when Tatum laid him out. Obviously, we didn't have the media we have today, but it was on the morning news and a picture in the paper two days later of the trainers all around him as he lay there on the field motionless.

Maybe Daryl never blamed Tatum, but I hated "The Assassin" - and the Raiders - for that cheap shot. Pre-season no less!

He brought us some great moments, albeit far too few!

I am glad he's out of his pain.
