He might be the best player in all of football never mind just defense. He deserves it.
He's the best defensive player in the NFL.

If you adjust for importance of position then JJ is the best in the league. Basically I think his skill at his position far exceeds his peers at his position more than any other. That's an interesting thought. Would you rate him as high as *spit* Manning, or Brady, or Rodgers? Megatron? Purple Jesus? Gronk?
It's a very interesting comparison.
I wouldn't have thought so. Revis is best utilized at CB. Watt can play as a 4-3 DT/DE, a 34 DE and I hazard a thought that you could bulk him up to 310 and play him as an undersized DT in the 34.
Frankly, the guy is a freak. That's not to say Revis isn't a freak but I'm not sure he would be as effective playing Safety as he is playing Corner. 15-16 million sounds reasonable.

Even without this adjustment you have to rate him pretty high right there with the QBs. I don't think Gronk nor Megatron belong that high.
He can stock up on the 'roids now.
I hope Belichick will because most likely it will take close to what Watt received to retain Chandler Jones.
Per a source with knowledge of the deal, Watt will receive $30.87 million fully guaranteed at signing. The source says that the balance converts at the beginning of the 2016 league year.
Which means that, after two more seasons, $51.876 million will be fully guaranteed for Watt.
I meant that in the opposite direction take out the importance of each position. We always rate QBs best in the NFL because their position is more important but if you take that out of the equation and just focus on how good a player is compared to his peers at the same position than I think Watt represents the largest difference in talent between himself and his peers. If you adjust for importance of the position, you have to put QBs in all the top slots.
I like Chandler, but he isn't nearly the player Watt is. Not yet, anyway.
Barring a major uptick, if he asked for that kind of dough it would take Bill three nanoseconds to make his decision.
I agree he is not that type of player, but if he continues to develop has he has in his first 2 years he very well could be, combine his improvement with the uptake in defensive contracts and we will be faced with a decision, maybe not that much, but a substantial investment.I like Chandler, but he isn't nearly the player Watt is. That's an odd thing to say. Do you legitimately believe Watt is on 'roids?
He's only 24. Clean history and high character. Hard worker. There's no reason for his play to fall off. If anything, it might get better with Clowney on the same Dline.
This is the type of player GM's don't mind paying because their isn't a huge risk to go along with it. He's the complete opposite of Albert Haynesworth.
This shouldn't set the market for Jones. Jones is on his way to becoming a great player but Watt is significantly better than Jones at this point. That may change in the near future but Jones will need to raise his level of consistent excellence a rung or two to compete with Watt. He's worth it. He hasn't shown any signs that he's a head case like Haynesworth, he's lived through good seasons and bad seasons, and he is equally effective against run and pass (unlike Mario Williams, who is pretty much just a pass rusher). I'm not sure this quite sets a market for Jones when he's due, as Watt is more of an interior player who sometimes kicks inside. Jones is an outside player who occasionally kicks inside. They tend to have different market scales.
