Field Yates: Pats' Passing Offense Will Be One of the Best IF ...

The two complaints I have with Vereen in the passing game is the sloppiness running the wheel route (which has still been reported since OTA's started) and his ability to track the ball on deep routes, such as the catch that he dropped in the regular season game against Denver last year deep on the sideline. If he can fix those two things, he'll be an excellent weapon on third down. Not sure where he lined up on that play in the Denver game. If he was in the slot, then I think he was running a 9-route.
The funny thing is two of the better games of his career 2 playoffs ago and week one last year included two ridiculously good wheel routes for TDs and I thought it was going to be his best asset but he definitely struggled with it after returning from injury last year. I think he will get it back and the route will be one we use plenty. I am more worried about his health than his route running and/or catching.

Vereen did not score in week 1 of 2013.

I think not having Edelman and Amendola as your only receivers on the field will make a huge difference, having players like Dobson, LaFell, Thompkins, and Boyce who are threats beyond the 10 yard line will be instrumental in the offense being more effective.

Unless we are in a 4 WR set I would prefer not to see Edelman and Amendola on the field together.

Maybe the play I am thinking of didn't actually score or maybe it was a different game but I am pretty sure it was vs the Bills.

Either way I recall a few nice wheel routes which made the struggle on a few late last year seem weird.

I think he caught on against the Bills in week 17, I cannot remember what the route.

Well we all remember the extremely pretty one for a td in the playoffs 2 years ago. I think his speed and hands should make the wheel one of his staples.

I think those who suggest Vereen cannot make that play are keyed in on the play against the Browns when he was wide open and the ball bounced off his soft cast and he could not pull it in.

Vereen has tremendous talent, he is probably one of the most talented back in the NFL, many overlook that he played all of last season when he returned with a broken wrist covered in a soft cast.

Pretty easy to do when the coverage is that blown, though. The one in the playoffs against Houston was much more impressive because the coverage was tight, but the route was perfectly run and the throw was even better than the route.

By all accounts, James White had a very solid OTA/minicamp. Doug Kyed notes:

White had a noticeable drop in Wednesday’s minicamp practice, but the rookie running back, overall, showed better hands than Shane Vereen this spring. White also appears to be an experienced route runner, and he was known for his pass blocking at Wisconsin. Vereen is the better athlete, however.

Hopes are high for Vereen next season, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility to see the Patriots give White an equal chance to earn the “starting” third-down back spot in training camp.

The Vereen-White battle is reminiscent of when the Patriots appeared to be “phasing out” a contract-year Wes Welker in favor of Julian Edelman in 2012 before the latter suffered an injury. That’s not to say we saw any sort of phase-out for Vereen this spring, but given his contract scenario, it’s possible that the Patriots approach the position in a similar fashion.

I think Kyed's "Vereen-White battle" is overblown, but I like the idea of (1) having more than one receiving RB in case of injury, (2) having an option with Vereen going into a

Aye, but I was wrong on the route. For some reason, I thought that Vereen lined up in the backfield on that one but he actually lined up at split end. Still, the route and throw were absolutely beautiful.

He's gotten wide open on that play more than everyone else playing that position the last 10 years combined, so I don't think he is weak at the wheel route.

It's night and day when Gronk is on the field for us. The guy is a monster.
