2014 Draft Contact List

I don't know if this is an official visit or a workout but this doesn't surprise me one bit. Fits the mould of a Patriots' QB

Tom Brady is getting older and Ryan Mallett has been in the wings waiting, but they need a third quarterback. Well the Patriots have interest in a small school quarterback, who I feel is the best small school QB in the draft. Jeff Matthews will have private visits with both the Cardinals and Patriots in […] The post Patriots are one of three teams meeting with Cornell QB Jeff Matthews appeared first on NFL Draft Diamonds.

Whilst there's still a month to go, does anyone else think it interesting that the only OL we are reported to have worked out is Trey Hopkins of Texas. That's it apparently (some suggestion that Matt Patchan got a look at the BC pro day).

I don't read much into visits, etc.

That said, we kept several young OL last year, depending how much they do (or don't) like Cave, Kline, Barker in the interior there may not be much room, we already have 3 tackles.

Going back over the last three years of visits, the Patriots look at a lot of prospects at the position they end up drafting. I don't necessarily focus on the names, but more often than not, the positions they look at can be telling.

That is interesting given the very large number of WR they've looked at.

I wouldn't sit tight with last year's rookie crop and two slot guys with injury histories. We tend to fall in love with the young prospects and think they'll have a linear or sometimes exponential leap the next few years but that isn't reality. Sometimes they cap out and I'm not 100% even with Dobson. Thompkins and Boyce I don't understand why anybody would be certain at this point. I'm not saying they can't\won't progress but to be certain? No.

It's a heck of a WR class. While the position doesn't look like a priority, there's a real opportunity to find a starting-caliber wideout with size and speed even after round 2.

I am a big believer in "not that bad" does not equal "good enough" so based on that I agree with you.

But it's still difficult to slot new guys in. We usually only keep 5 + Slater.

Edelman, Dobson, LaFell would seem like locks.

If we keep 5 and draft one that leaves only one of Amendola, Boyce and KT.

It's possible we could keep 6 + Slater which relieves the pressure a little. But if not, we have to pick one of those three. Keep Amendola, get rid of Boyce and KT. Maybe we can flip Amendola to O'Brien for a late pick. I understand the roster bonus thing but maybe they want to move on from Amendola and take the entire hit this year, who knows.

I know one thing, Boyce showed too much athleticism to move on from this quickly unless he's a complete dunce in the meeting room.

If we read this into WR, I would assume we'll keep 6 + Slater, those would be Dobson, Edelman, Amendola, LaFell, Boyce, Draft Pick. But it's a tight squeeze.

I agree with you on Boyce. I think KT is the one that could be upgraded.

Agreed but even upgrading KT means releasing Boyce or Amendola or keeping one more WR than usual. Not that I have a huge problem with one extra WR, we usually keep at least one player who almost never makes the 46 active roster. OTOH if we keep Mallett and draft his replacement we'll be one roster spot down to begin with.

I agree with you on Boyce if he's healthy. I think Thomkins or Boyce could land on 'IR'. I can also see Amendola still getting traded or cut.

I've said this a couple of times and it doesn't generate much of a response but I'd like to see Boyce be Vereen's backup. They're both the same size and Vereen is more receiver than RB anyway. That would certainly help with roster space.

And this guy needs the ball in hand:

I don't think Amendola's getting cut but I do think they're studying his potential replacement for 2015.

Many think DA is safe due to the bonus. But he's not. First, they couldn't make him a post June 1 cut if they didn't pay it -although they may want to get rid of his hit all in one year. Second, apparently his $2M roster bonus had offset language so the up to $2M would be moved from our cap to the new team (traded or released) unless he didn't sign with anyone.

And I want him to replace DA as Edelman's backup - so there :)

Regardless, if he gets the playbook we really need to get the ball in his hands in open space.

That works too.

Certainly more likely. I wasn't saying he will be cut but if he comes up lame in a pre-season game I think they might cut bait.

Getting the playbook really is the key for him. I can see him backing up Vereen as Manx suggested and taking reps from DA.

What do you mean "if"? Don't you mean "when"? :)

I honesly think Patriots looking for outside Guys only, we have all the inside small Guys in the World + Tight Ends, what we need is another big body on the outside.
