Hi all,
This is an exercise that has been done in years past, and now that the comp. picks have been awarded and the major FA moves (maybe not) are done, I thought we could revisit it.
Rules:
Using NFL Draft - 2014 NFL Draft Prospects - CBSSports.com - NFLDraftScout.com.

Round 1- you can pick a guy up to 3 spots earlier than the pats pick. I.E. patriots pick at 29 so you could pick the #26 ranked player or any player after that.

Round 2 and 3 can go up 5 spots
Rounds 4 through 7 up 10.

Patriots picks: 29, 62, 93, 130, 140, 198, 206, 244

Are trades allowed?

Here is mine after a quick look without over analyzing too much.
29. Ryan Shazier, ILB
62. Dominick Easley, DT
93. Joel Bitonio, OT
130. Antuan Exum or Phillip Gaines, S/CB (can't decide just yet)
140. Trai Turner, OG
198. Isiah Crowell, RB
206. Colt Lyerla, TE
244. Trey Millard, HB

PFA's
Tom Savage, QB
Larry Webster, DE/OLB
Gator Hoskins, FB
Gabe Ikard, C
Brock Vereen, S
Jeremy Gallon, WR
Terrence Fede, DE
Jake Metz, DE

P.S- Just doing this excercise, I think I could come up with a draft I would be happy with just from potential UDFA's. That list could be a mile long if I didn't stop myself.

I'm gonna go ahead and guess that you're trying to get 3 spots away from pick 13 and select Aaron Donald. :D

That's one option. Another is to trade back - say 29 to SF for 56 and 61. Then take OL, TE and DT (Easley).

MWPF's mock is darn good, though.

I've had that thought myself, several times. I plan on putting together a potential UDFA board as the draft gets closer. I could see being really aggressive about trying to load up on guys via a "second draft" - teams that are organized and contract agents proactively are more likely to land prospects, and the Pats have a strong history of UDFAs making the team and making an impact.

but now that the comp picks have been awarded, it becomes a little more real.:D

29. Ryan Shazier
62. Dominique Easley (torn between him and Matthews, though)
93. Joel Bitonio
130. Christian Jones
140. Phillip Gaines
198. Jeff Janis
206. Stay put
244. Trey Millard

These exercises are fun, but the huge difference is that you know where prospects are ranked, and who you can pick. In the real draft, you don't. So, looking at NFL DraftScout's rankings, I either take Ryan Shazier and Dominique Easley at 29 and 62 (and don't trade up for Aaron Donald, since I can get 2 impact players), or I trade back a bit and pick up an early 4th and then take ASJ, Easley, and Jordan Tripp/Christian Jones with the extra pick. But in reality I don't think Easley will last anywhere near 29, I'm not sure ASJ will last to around 40, and I realistically have to choose between only getting 1 out of Donald/Easley (with a trade up for Donald, obviously), Shazier and ASJ.

29. Ryan Shazier, LB/S, Ohio St.
62. Dominique Easley, DT/DE, Florida
93. Joel Bitonio, OL, Nevada
130. Christian Jones, LB, Florida St.
140. Antone Exum, SS/CB, Virginia Tech
198. Russell Bodine, OG/C, North Carolina
206. Logan Thomas, QB/TE, Virginia Tech
244. Trey Millard, FB/H-Back, Oklahoma

Variant:

- Trade 29 to Jacksonville for 39 and 105
39. Austin Seferian-Jenkins, TE, Washington
105. Jordan Tripp, LB, Montana

Miss out on Shazier, but get ASJ + Tripp instead

UDFA:

Terrance Fede, DE, Marist
Gator Hoskins, FB/H-Back, Marshall
Trey Burton (note correct spelling), WR/H-Back, Florida
Larry Webster, DE, Bloomsburg
Zach Moore, DE, Concordia
Cornelius Lucas, OT, Kansas St.
Jonathan Dowling, DB, Western Kentucky'
Brandon Linder, OL, Miami
Jake Murphy, TE, Utah
Zach Kerr, DT, Delaware
Zac Bauman, RB, Northern Arizona
Lorenzo Taliaferro, RB, Coastal Carolina

Easley, Shazier, Jones and Exum would give a tremendous set of disruptive, athletic versatile weapons on defense to augment the existing talent base, and the new secondary.

29 traded for 46 + 78
46 Jimmy Ward S NIU
48 Aquired for 62+93
48 ASJ TE Washington
78 traded for 88 +120
88 Joel Bitonio OT\G Nevada
120 Phillip Gaines CB Rice
130 Justin Ellis NT LA Tech
140 Bryan Stork C FSU
198 Zack Kerr DT Delaware
206 Michael Campanaro WR Wake Forest
244 Jake Murphy TE Utah

29. ASJ
62. Easley
93. Tripp
130. Exum
140. J. Ellis
198. Patchan
206. L. Thomas
244. Urschel

It's hard to predict what opportunities, as far a trades are concerned, will be available. I'd be open to moving up or down depending. I personally don't really love any of the prospects around 29 which is why I "reached" for ASJ. If we were picking with the same players available that are available in the CBS game I'd strongly advocate trading down.

If you cannot trade and you have to go with the original picks, this is what I have –

- 29-Ryan Shazier
- 62-Dominique Easley
- 93-C.J. Fiedorowicz
- 130-Bryan Stork
- 140-Justin Ellis
- 198-Jeff Janis
- 206-Colt Lyerla
- 244-John Urschel

1-29. DT RaShede Hageman
2-62. C Weston Richburg
3-93. G/T Joel Bitonio
4-130. LB Christian Jones
4-140. CB Antone Exum
6-198. WR Jeff Janis
6-206. TE A.C. Leonard
7-244. S Alden Darby

Admittedly don't know too much about the prospects this year.

Those new rankings killed me.

29 jace Amaro TE
62 Richburg C
93 Yamin Smallwood ILB
130 Andre Williams RB
140 Brian Stork OC/OG
198 Deardre coleman DT
206 colt Lyeria TE
244 T. Boyd QB

Oh man I am sorry! I looked all over to see if this had been started already. Sorry I missed it, my bad.

Not a problem- just joking. New rankings and comp picks make the other one obsolete- as this one will be in about 2 weeks when the rankings change.

I will say that I've never seen the rankings on so many players be all over the place as we get close to a month to the draft, as this years. I think it shows the talent and depth of this year draft.

The Heatster's Shot

29. Ryan Shazier - DW Ohio St. I shall stay put at 29 and take Shazier. He is designated as "Defensive Weapon", as I don't want to put him in a box - he's a pe*******, you've got to let him fly! He will play some linebacker and some safety and blow up some returners.

62. Trade with Tampa for 69 and 143

69. Donte Moncrief - WR Mississippi. Forgive me if I don't put all my Fast Outside Receiver eggs into the Aaron Dobson basket. Good size, speed, and production, and he might become the best NFL WR not named Sammy Watkins in this draft. And, if I may recycle my line from another thread, he could also provide the type of routes/mismatches that Bristol County Inmate 174594, who is unfortunately ineligible for work release, used to.

93. Anthony Johnson - DL LSU. Productive SEC player to add some youth to the middle of
the defense.

130. Adrian Hubbard - ER Alabama. Continuing the youth trend at Edge Rusher, with a
physical specimen out of Saban University.

140. Anthony Steen - C/G Alabama. Provides an experienced body for depth inside, and can
push for a starting job in 2015 as a guard, but I wouldn't rule him out as a center either. I have a sneaky suspicion that Logan Mankins isn't going to be a Patriot after this season.

143. Crockett Gilmore - TE Colorado St. Deceptively quick TE who can contribute in both
phases of the game.

198. Max Bullough - LB Michigan St. Great player, and seems to be moving up the boards.

206. Corey Linsley - C Ohio St. File this under "It's never a bad idea to get an Ohio St
lineman." Bull of a player.

244. Antonio Andrews - RB Western Kentucky. Strong, productive, north/south runner who
would likely replace Ridley, Boldin, or both, on the roster in 2015.

Top 10 UDFAs:

Jeff Matthews QB Cornell
Stephen Morris QB Miami
David Fluellen RB Toledo
Isaiah Burse WR Fresno St
Jake Murphy TE Utah
Gator Hoskins TE Marshall
Cornelius Lucas OT Kansas St
Zach Fulton G Tennessee
Austin Wentworth G Fresno St
Keith Reiser CB Florida Atlantic

I really like your first two picks, less thrilled by the rest. Still, it's always a good thing to have different names thrown in. Johnson is interesting. He looked like 6'2" of muscle at the combine, incredible build, and yet he tested poorly and his film underwhelms too. Strange prospect.
