FWIW, Verner said on the radio today that the Pats are a "definite possibility". Many people believe he already has deal in place and is just waiting until tomorrow to sign with the team. If Verner already has a deal in place, this a good sign that it is with the Pats.

RT @MadDogRadio: Verner: "(New England) is definitely a possibility.. Jason's brother (Devin) has been lobbying for me (to join Patriots)"

EDIT: My title is wrong. Devin McCourty, not Jason McCourty is courting him.

I think it's a long shot. But it would be consistent with last year - giving their own guy a chance to come to terms before FA, but then moving quickly to wrap up an alternative once FA starts.

Alterraun Verner says Patriots are "definitely a possibility" during interview on @MadDogRadio. Said similar things about four other teams.

A lot of talk I will believe it when I see it. That's one of the premier corners in the market and he will demand $. Unless we want to pay a premium I dont see it. Also Clayton is "guessing" Talib ends up in Washington.

Talib GP:

2010 = 11
2011 = 13
2012 = 10
2013 = 13

Verner GP:

2010 = 16
2011 = 16
2012 = 16
2013 = 16

Yes please.

I will just repeat what I posted in the talib thread. Verner also said..

Verner: "I would definitely consider (San Francisco).. they've been winning.. I just feel like that's not a direction they're going"

Verner: "(Playing for Rex and the Jets) could be a (great fit).. Revis and Cromartie both thrived in that system"

Verner: "(Denver) would definitely be a good situation for me"

He was asked about 5 teams, said all of them would be great fits, the only negative thing I've seen was he doesn't believe San Fran is leaning his way.

I wouldn't put much stock in this normally especially since I didn't hear the quote in context, but many people believe Verner has already come to terms with a team. If that is the case, this is a definite sign that he could have chosen the Patriots.

That said, you put this quote in context and it could have been an innocuous comment that means nothing.

Well, I probably should have looked at the source Twitter account rather than the guy who re-tweeted it. Ben Volin only retweeted the Patriots' quote making it sound like they were the only team he spoke about.

But looking at more Tweets on Maddog's Twitter account, looks like the Jets and Giants may be out because he said he wants to go to a winner.

Re: Alrerraun Verner: Pats are a "definite possibilty" & Jason McCourty told him to g

Just for fun, what type of contract would you offer him?

Given his age, I might push for a 5 or 6 year deal @ 45 or 54m with around 20 guaranteed. He's only 25 and should still be in his prime for a minimum of 4 years barring injury. I know the numbers seem high but he's not signing for less than 9/yr IMO after seeing some of the deals this year.

Re: Alrerraun Verner: Pats are a "definite possibilty" & Jason McCourty told him to g

Unfortunately I think Verner is the overrated CB of this class. But, he has been healthy his entire career so far so that does say something. He has also showed improvement year over year.

Re: Alrerraun Verner: Pats are a "definite possibilty" & Jason McCourty told him to g

The problem with replacing Talib with Verner is that we're back to the smurf CB issue. I firmly believe that you need at least one guy who can match up against 6'3"+ receivers.

Breakdown of all Verner snaps in '13....impressive....but conclusion is he faced a weaker WR group than the elites

I don't think Verner has the length and strength that you need to go against these 6'2+ elite WRs. He's going to get overpaid. I think Revis, who is an inch taller and 10 pounds heavier than Verner, is the cutoff and rare exception of a smaller CB that can cover big WRs.

So sign Browner, too!

Really, that would make things a bit crowded at CB. Can't be paying your 5th CB 4 million per.

Exactly. Talib is going to cost a lot of money in FA. If we can get Verner for a little less or something similar, I would absolutely take him. Talib, statistically, is better when healthy. But Verner doesn't have the injury history or the history with the law that Talib has. If Talib is going to Washington, I would love Verner as a back-up plan.

Good post anyone wondering about Verner should check that link out
Not only did Verner primarily stick to one side, something that is not unusual for even the best of cornerbacks in the NFL, when the Titans did move their cornerbacks around, it was Jason McCourty who generally drew the tougher assignment.

Anything that guarantees that Arrington continues to play in the slot and not outside is a good plan to me. Browner/Verner on the outside, Dennard/Ryan/Arrington battling for snaps inside, and Dennard/Ryan also backing up the outside positions.

Toss a one year deal Browner's way or pull the trigger on Stanley Jean-Baptiste (or any of the other 6'+ CB's) in the draft.

Re: Alrerraun Verner: Pats are a "definite possibilty" & Jason McCourty told him to g

Verner being small isn't too much of an issue due to him being more of a zone/off-man corner, if you watch his picks most come from either jumping the route (once the ball is in the air, not much falling for pump fakes from what I've seen) and being sat in a zone and the ball coming right at him.

Totally different play style to Talib.

Re: Alrerraun Verner: Pats are a "definite possibilty" & Jason McCourty told him to g

I find the following quote the most interesting, and based on it, lead me to believe he is definitely a possibility:

"I would feel more obliged to go to a team that paid me $6 or $7 million and made me one of the highest-paid players on the team than go to a team that paid me $8 or $9 million and I wasn’t one of the highest-paid players on the team.”
