Mallett's Market Value

We'd be lucky to get a 3rd round pick for Mallett at this point. He hasn't had a chance to play in the regular season, and he hasn't looked good in the pre season.

He hasn't looked good in the preseason because the Patriots specifically used the preseason to work on his weaknesses (short touch throws) rather than show off his skills (throwing down the field). Both O'Brien and McDaniels, the two most likely suitors, would have a pretty good idea of what he's capable of because they could see it every day in practice for a year and two years, respectively.

We still have Brian Daboll even too i'll rather have him as the NeXT OL coach IF (god forbidden) we need a new one.
My best guess is that Daboll is the clear top candidate at OC if McDaniels is gone.

I'm still holding out hope that Brian Ferentz is their next OL coach. He has three years of coaching under Belichick, including the distinction of being the TE coach for the best season by one team's TEs in NFL history. He's currently coaching the OL under his dad at Iowa, ironically also working with DJ Hernandez, the Iowa TE coach.

Agree, something in the mid 70's is what I'm hoping for

I'd say current WR coach Chad O'Shea would become the next OC, he;s been praised league wide for his work with rookie WRs this past season. He'd also keep the Irish tradition going (JMcD, BOB, JMcD) hahahahaha

Even that seems unlikely to me. Maybe now with more guys having gotten hurt but I just don't see it as very likely

I'd expect the Browns to have interest in him this off-season, especially pre-draft with Lombardi loving him, even without a JMcD signing or BOB signing

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Might be wise for Cleveland to have a strong armed qb given the conditions they play in for many games.

The Texans would be insane to pass up Teddy BW and trade for Mallett. 0% chance that happens IMO. Mallett is a guy you bring in to compete for a job. You certainly don't pass up a guy with TBW's talent and potential for him.

You might if you're salivating at the prospect of pairing Clowney with Watt. Or trading back for a bunch of picks like St. Louis got.

Yeah having O'Brein in Houston should help. I could see them going Clowney and grabbing or trading for a QB.

In the National Football League the quarterback position is about 10 times more valuable than a D lineman. Especially when you already have a stud pass rusher.
If they think they can trade down bc they like one of the other three top QBs then I suppose that's an option...but it's risky.

He might fetch a 4th rounder

Is a QB 10 times more valuable than a franchise pass rusher?

2006 NFL Draft

1. Mario Williams
2. Reggie Bush
3. Vince Young.

Like Williams, Clowney has that once in a generation athleticism. I'm not saying they won't take Bridgewater, just that getting a dominant defense has to have an appeal.

I'm not sure what Mallett's trade value is. There is just so little actual real game tape on him, that it makes it very difficult for any team to judge his true value. But the fact is that there will be a market for him this off season, and this will be the time to move him. The QB crop this season looks good but not great. There are no Lucks out there, but a lot of Tannyhill types

It will all depend on how the rest of the league views the Pats QB development program. Cassell was a 7th round pick who never started a college game, and he's had his moments both good and bad. The same could be said for the undrafted Hoyer, who was deemed good enough by BB to be Brady's only back up as a rookie. and who flashed in a positive manner in his time with the Browns. But he'll be coming off an ACL.

Regardless of whether the Pats trade Mallett, I think the back role will be well filled because either Hoyer or Cassell will very likely be available this off season, maybe even both

I think if we want anything significant for Mallett then it's McDaniels/Mallett to Cleveland or bust. Certainly the fact that Lombardi liked Mallett in that draft, the reported interest last year and the interest in McDaniels suggests the possibility of Mallett to Cleveland. The other side of the coin is that if McDaniels goes to Cleveland and they don't trade for Mallett then you can kiss goodbye to any picks other than day 3 ones.

Can't see a reason why Vikings should cut Cassel, he's under contract and could be a mentor for the new QB they get. He won all the games Vikings won this year, plus Ponder have shown he's not the answer.

Hoyer is a Patriot ( Lombardi loves them ) there in the few games he played won. Cost 1.25mill next year. Again could be a mentor or WHO knows, mayby they go with him ?

I might be wrong, but wasn't Mallett a "BoB" pick? Can still trade for him, but i doubt he trade for that QB mayby another.

As a BOB fan, if he thinks Mallett is a starting NFL QB, then this draft is perfect for him. He could afford to give up the #33 pick, because he would be in position to trade down and more than make up for the lose with a basket load of picks he'd get from some QB hungry team who falls in love with one of the good but not great prospects that will come out this year.

When with 2 picks between 27 and 33 the Pats would be in great position to get 2 big bodies within the same talent grouping (ie a first round DT and a top rated OG, which would go a long way to setting the Pats up for 2014 and beyond.)

For BOB it couldn't work out better. He can get a QB with first round talent PLUS 3 years of experience in an NFL system on the relative cheap, and still have a reasonable shot a Clowney, whose draft status as dropped a bit, after a very underachieving season. The thing is that while there are still questions about Mallett, there are just as many about each of the top QB prospects coming out. Given all that, why NOT take the guy who has been in the NFL for 3 years. But the Texas can get that great basket of picks and still stay in the top 5 where Clowney is likely to go.
