A week to revisit Ryan Allen vs. Zoltan Mesko - ESPN Boston

Allen has punted 47 times (tied for second highest in the NFL).

There's one silver lining -- if you punt, then you didn't turn it over. Still, I look back happily on the days that Mesko and his predecessors rarely got off the bench.

(Actually, there weren't such days, because a combo punter/FG holder/PAT holder finishes almost every drive, but you know what I mean ...)

As the saying goes, you're probably doing OK if every drive ends with a kick (hopefully a few from the placekicker mixed in0.

the thread title is misleading....

It's not a "Ryan Allen" stat, it's a TEAM stat. You might as well call it a Danny Aiken stat.

Deliberately so. But then, it plays in a couple of different ways against the debate as to how much a punter matters. In low-punt-count seasons, I don't think he's important at all. But the more times you punt, obviously, the more important he is.

Remember the Ken Walter days?

you WANT a beating, don't you?

Ken Walter...if a football was a brick, THAT would be what Ken Walter was kicking...a million football players and HE makes an NFL roster...never quite figured that one out...

You are correct, Sir. Almost all football stats are actually team stats, and this is one of the most extreme cases of that rule.

I would love for the offense to play better but I have to say I am liking 6-2 record and top 5 pass defense that is giving up less then 20 points a game,

IMO its much better then having to score 40 a game just to get a win, Brady is killing my fantasy team but I like seeing them win close games without Brady playing any where near he's best

Agreed. In particular, I like that the secondary and pass rush are capable enough to allow for serious game plans, in-game scheme changes, etc., rather than vanilla schemes that didn't stop much of anything.

Agreed. As someone who remembers the Ken Walter era well, I got no problem with Ryan Allen.

The Ryan Allen # of punts (46) is not just a "team" stat, but more specifically an offensive stat due to their lack of execution.

The record for Patriots punts in a season is 103, during a year we went 2-14. We are on pace to get within 9 punts of that this year, so yes--it's a somewhat disturbing stat for our offense to say the least.

Off topic--we won't need to worry about the "Allen vs Mesko" battle this weekend since Pittsburgh outright cut him this afternoon.

I always confused this guys name with a former Celtics guard :p

According to this we're tied for 4th most punts:
NFL Stats: by Team Category

Bills 50
Chiefs 49
Jets 49
Jaguars 47
Patriots 47
Giants 46

hey at least we're in good company, with such high powered offenses as KC and Jax

Always good to be listed in the same breath with the Jaguars. :rocker:

This kid is doing a great job.

I think his only error so far was a bad hold on that field goal Gostspace missed but I'm not sure about that.

Yeah, it looked like 1 bad hold on that jets game.
