Pats Eye Welker (Reiss)

When I watch him play he reminds me a lot of Tim Dwight, and I don't see a lot of people wishing that he had stayed.

Tim Dwight never had a 67 catch season like Welker had last year.

Also, Welker had 89 punt and kick returns last season.

Re: Per Patsfans.com Messageboard: Pats interested in Welker

I will say he is very versatile. He is a known commity. say the pats do get him and he ends up being here, productive for the next 5-6 years. I think that would be worth a 2nd rounder.

I think they should look at DJ Hackett too if they are considering giving up a 2nd rounder.

Giving up a 2nd rounder is that big a deal if you consider this as your draft pick.

Some of you must be drinking the kool-aid with the added alcohol ingredients.
If you think Welker has even a chance of being a solid #2 WR that will take care of our WR needs, I respectfully think.....you're nuts.

This guy's value is a slot receiver and ST's returner. He will not grab 80-90 catches a season....not even on dump offs. And if he is our #2, we are in trouble. I prefer Gaffney anyway to Welker as a WR anyway.

I am as excited as anybody that the Pats are making moves and have their front office game face on....but let's not make this, if it happens, the WR upgrade that puts us over the top. I think Beoli is thinking more ST's. Especially since they won't be putting Moroney out their on kickoff returns next season....at least I hope not.

He could fill the troy brown role

Don't look at Welker's emergence as a sign of his ability as much as it is a sign that Chambers, Booker, and McMichael all pretty much sucked last year.

The same could be said for caldwell and gaffney due to the lack of talent we had at WR. Regardless of the reasons why the player made the stats and contributed, they still contributed and got the job done. BTW, living on the west coast, I watched Dwight for a long time.

Aside from both being short white dudes, the comparisons could end there.
Dwight has been injury prone his whole career and was only a white boy with speed. He didnt have all of the intangibles that welker possesses, not to mention, Welker is a hell of alot younger then Dwight. Thats why no one is whining for Dwight back.

NOW pft is talking about the Pats using da poison pill to screw over the dolphins.

I like Patrick Crayton as well - a lot of big third down catches for that boy. And it's out of our division.

yeah you can add him, i've been impressed with what he's done, not sure if he has alot more upside tho

Dwight is a good special teams player, or at least he was, and he plays with the same reckless abandon as Welker. He also had a lot of big catches the year he was here.

He has never been forced into the role where he is a team's number one receiver. When Dwight was here he was a number three and ideally that is where Welker should be.

BB is gonna do it.

If the Patriots use the poison pill, then the league will immediately work on getting that provision out of the CBA at Polian's behest, I'm sure, which wouldn't be too big a loss.

I guess the Pats aren't messing around anymore. BB must be ticked

You're right-the Patriots are in a dealling mood this weekend!

We don't need anymore young receivers who will take a season or two to learn the system, we need guys who can come in and be impact players, and Welker is just that. No one said he is going to be a #2 or whatever, but you need guys who can adapt quickly to a system, look at Gaffney for example, he comes in during the middle of the season and then by the end of it is the teams best receiver, thats what we need, not young guys unlike his first name is Calvin and last name is Johnson.

I wouldn't mind drafting a WR, but to rely on them next season will hurt us more than help us.

According to that ESPN link, Len Pasquarelli thinks a second rounder for Wes is a steal.

The fact that the Pats have two first rounders gives them some room here.

If the Patriots were to do this I would probably support it because I trust Belichick and Pioli, and their knowledge of the situation. What I'm saying is that with my limited knowledge of the situation I think it doesn't make total sense. But I am not going to pretend I am an expert or know better than them.

Right. A slot receiver, kick returner, punt returner. Exactly what the Pats need with Troy Brown's imminent retirement.

Personally? I'm jumping for joy at the thought of finding the next Troy Brown. That's an important role in the Pats' system.

Look at it this way. If Chad Jackson ever gets on the field or if you draft a "marquee" type WR, the only thing they will be good at in their first year or two is deep fly patterns. Fine, so get Chad on the field or draft some kid. But, where is your sure-handed possession route runner? Answer: Wes Welker.

A good receiving corp (and, in fact, a good team) is the sum of many parts.

I like this move. Welker has proven himself in the NFL, even with sub-par QBs. The draft is always a gamble, so I think he is worth a 2nd round pick.

Go Pats!!!

libalu53 here. I watched Welker play Superbowl Weekend in a flag football game (NFL sponsored) on Hollywood Beach Florida. Flutie was the quarterback and a lot of great current & former players on both sides of the ball.
!! The kid Welker is fast...always open...and has GREAT hands. I think he is only 5'9", but in shorts and a tank top...the kid is chiseled.

Wouldn't be a bad pickup

libalu53 here. live in Ma., was in Hollywood Fl. for superbowl weekend
