Enough "pink" already!

The NFL has heard your complaints about their meagre and incongruous attempt at public service. Next week they will rebrand October as Chevy Truck Awareness Month, a topic which will not upset their core demographic and will make them much more money than the sale of garishly-colored equipment.

Did you know millions of Americans suffer from lack of torque? Schedule an appointment at your local Chevy dealer to learn more.

People complained so much to Safeway stores about how they felt they were being harassed to donate that Safeway will still be taking donations, but only if you use your debit or credit card and the machine will ask you if you want to donate..

What I want to know is what color would officially go with Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. I suspect blue. After a decade or so of doing the breast cancer gig, I think the NFL needs to switch "awarenesses." Prostate cancer research needs $$$, and men need to be educated. But the NFL will never go there, of course -- weak marketing potential.

I don't think anyone here is saying it's an inherently "bad thing." But how much of a "good thing" it actually turns out to be, in context of the over-the-top image being projected, is open to question.

What is the possible harm of what they are doing? Fans might not like it? I'll believe that will matter when fans start turning off their TVs in protest.

Meanwhile there is a very real benefit to what is being done.

You're a good poster but this is a silly thread probably stemming from some football purist views that don't matter in the real world or even in your own football viewing habits.

Again, no one is suggesting the campaign causes "harm." Much of the discussion here involves the league's (suspected) ulterior marketing motives. There are some very thoughtful posts in this thread.

Pink penalty flags. Pink first-down line. Pink shoes, gloves, towels -- :frusty:

Yes, breast cancer is a worthy charitable cause and yes, the NFL deserves credit for flying that flag (at least initially). But several years in, this pet "cause celebre" has assumed a weird life of its own that has crossed into cynical marketing overkill. When people like my fiancee even complain about it (she's a registered nurse), I think it's time to take notice. Why not prostate cancer awareness? Colon cancer awareness? Let's face it, the NFL has big-time influence on society and could be casting a wider net, especially after so many years of pushing "pink."

Colon cancer awareness is the brown ribbon...right

Remind me to start my cancer awareness program asap! I'll be the CEO of it and pay myself a few million a year. One of these days we will find the cure! We need your money to find the cure though. The more, the better!

Cancer is a universal bad thing everywhere, but, obviously you can see what I did...and what they do.

Pink it's my new obsession Pink it's not even a question, Pink on the lips of your lover, 'cause Pink is the love you discover

Pink as the bing on your cherry Pink 'cause you are so very Pink it's the color of passion 'Cause today it just goes with the fashion

Pink it was love at first sight Pink when I turn out the light, and Pink gets me high as a kite And I think everything is going to be all right No matter what we do tonight

You could be my flamingo 'Coz pink is the new kinda lingo Pink like a deco umbrella It's kink - but you don't ever tell her

Pink it was love at first sight, and Pink when I turn out the light Pink gets me high as a kite And I think everything is going to be all right No matter what we do tonight

Pink it was love at first sight Pink when I turn out the light Pink it's like red but not quite And I think everything is going to be all right No matter what we do tonight

Sink the pink! :rocker:

I find all the pink so annoyingly distracting that I may just take the month of October off from watching the NFL on TV. I'll watch the Pats, but I really don't think I can take very much of pink flags and pink first down markers.

A MAJOR problem with prostrate cancer is that there is no reliable test indicator apart from the digital butt probe exam. That fails to detect many major cancers. PSA test is trashed because of false positives but at least you can decide whether to get a biopsy. The biopsy feels like someone snapping a large rubber band into your nether regions 12 times as they sample each area of the prostate. Joy. Then to top it off once detected, nobody really knows how to tell the potentially aggressive prostate cancers from the slow moving ones.

Really need $ for some basic research here.

A rubber bildo tests for that?

No thanks.

Originally I think the NFL had done this campaign to raise awareness now I believe they just use it as a marketing tactic to women. As pointed out there is no harm caused by the campaign except to our eyes.

Personally I would prefer the NFL had a fan vote during preseason of charity to support maybe even some players foundations can be in there, then in October they dedicate a week to the top 4-5 charities. Can be done like the madden cover vote get some hype give fans a chance to meet some players all profit going to the charities. Gives the NFl a chance to market it's self far better as helping charities.

If the NFL really does care about breast cancer awareness it can still give monetary support lets face it all the pink hasn't given me any more info about breast cancer I knew about it before the NFL went pink

are they marketing to women yes but they have also raised 5 million since doing this and if not for the NFL doing this every October not many of us would even know its National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so at the end of the day if me seeing a bright pink flag on my TV once a week for the next three weeks helps save one woman's life im more then ok with a lil pink

You can never have enough "pink"...if u know what I'm saying...:))

My gf is the biggest feminist I know. She even mentioned her annoyance of the overboard pink.

Yeah, let's not raise money for all types of cancer research because it's annoying to look at for a few days in October. Somehow, I don't think this conversation would be taking place if the color were blue, green or black.

And I thought I was cynical. :D

What does "showing support" actually do, aside from alleviate people from any anxiety which might result in action?

How about a rankings board? We put ALL the players/owners on a big board and list the amount they donate to cancer research.

Many of them would compete with another to donate more and get all the kudos from that. THAT would actually make a difference.

This pink garbage is no difference from all those idiots who have a "Free Tibet" bumper sticker or pin, they get to claim a halo yet no one expects them to do a damned thing about the situation they're complaining about.

Most people's issue is it isn't "cancer awareness", but instead a distinct type of cancer. The end result is people feeling like breast cancer is hogging the limelight and quite possibly it getting a disproportionate amount of funding. I'm guessing if they were a hair more subtle and made it cancer awareness people wouldn't get bothered; the idea that this has to do with the color used is a bit silly IMO.

I'm also not sure what it's like where other people live, but I can't go a day without being reminded about breast cancer awareness. That combined with a month where we're completely inundated with it is a bit much, however I've lost enough loved ones to cancer, and I'm sure this has a net positive effect for others, that I'm not going to make any bones about it.

When the first flag was thrown early on, the Browns PI, it was hard to see the flag as it seemed to blend in with the players shoes, etc.
