Patriots sign former Oregon WR Lavasier Tuinei

Amendola's only 5'11" to Welker's 5'9", and Welker, at 5'9" has been catching passes at a rate nobody's ever done it. Tall receivers outside of Amendola doesn't speak, at all, to why Welker's gone. If it does, the Patriots are really, really stupid.

And the Patriots aren't really, really stupid.

Deus, welker was a post season weakness for this team. That's why he left.

Patriots first exhibition game is against the Eagles, who's new coach just came up from Oregon, and the team had a roster spot available. I doubt there's any more to the mystery.

If it was a regular season game, sure. But the Pats don't even particularly care if they win in the preseason, so I don't see the connection.

As for what's wrong with him that he's available right now, did see this on NFL.com:

Although he is tall and physical, Tuinei struggles to get off the line of scrimmage, as he is a slow mover and worked in the slot to avoid immediate contact.

Doesn't matter how big and physical a WR is if he can't get off the line of scrimmage.

You take a look at him now, while getting a few insights into the Eagles' offense.

You have to be incredibly ignorant to think that Welker was a post-season weakness. He never had fewer than 5 receptions or 50 yards in a post-season game, and his TD/G ratio is higher in the playoffs than in the regular season.

I realize he was productive. But he wasn't someone that could be relied on in the moment of truth. Look at his drops in the last 2 playoff losses, the pats saw enough and I bet Brady did also.

You think the Patriots are so stupid that they blame the 5'9" receiver for not being able to carry a team when the 6'6" 265 TE isn't playing and opponents can focus on beating the hell out of the little guy? I'm not sure you understand the definition of "weakness".

As for Brady, he was clearly not happy that Welker wasn't brought back, so I'm not sure why you'd bring him into this.

So he gets the credit when the team wins and no blame when they lose? C'mon, this is Wes Welker, not Peyton Manning.

Thanks......

Given that I called the blown play against the Giants a drop, and not a bad pass, how it Welker avoiding blame?

You, too, seem confused as to the definition of weakness.

The Patriots are nothing if not consistent when it comes to player contracts. The Pats determined Welker's contract worth and stuck by it, even after WW gave the Pats a last second chance to beat the Donk's offer. There are many examples of former Patriots that tried and failed to push the Pats for more money. Seems Pats brass feels that showing weakness by backpedaling on "final" offers is worse than letting quality talent walk.
That's why he's not on team. (that and WW's agent is a doofus extraordinaire)

The pass that wasnt caught vs the Giants in the last super bowl wasnt Welkers fault. The throw could have been better.

I was an imperfect pass but also perfectly catchable. Welker just dropped the ball.

How many rings did he clock when he was here?

You expect your star receiver to make that catch, especially in the Super Bowl of all places.

"Imperfect" is kind of a huge understatement. Mere "imperfect" passes don't cause receivers to have to spin 180 degrees and jump to catch the ball.

In fairness, while you expect your "star receiver" to make that catch, you also expect your 1st ballot HoF and greatest of all time QB to throw a more catchable ball :)

It's on both of them in my opinion. Bad throw resulting in a difficult yet makeable catch.

Are you saying that Belichick is looking for weaknesses to exploit to win the first preseason game?

That sounds really, really stupid.

Look at where the ball hit welker, he could have caught it all day long. He dropped the ball. Brady put it in a catchable spot and welker couldn't catch. Just like every year in the playoffs.

It was perfectly catchable. Look where Wes's hands were when the ball hit him, he dropped the pass. Star receivers make those catches. Brady put it where he could catch it and welker dropped the ball. Just like he did against the ravens.
