Pats tweet: Hernandez released

Then I'm guessing it has to be more than obstruction to justify the $7M cap hit they're (potentially) taking next year.

They're going to be able to recover the cap hit and signing bonus simply on the basis that he got arrested.

Florio:

...the move prevents the Patriots from ever recovering a penny of the $12.5 million signing bonus from his 2012 contract extension worth a total of $39 million. It remains to be seen whether the Patriots will try to avoid paying $3.25 million in a deferred payment due on March 31, 2014, and whether they’ll try to wipe out base-salary guaranteed of $1.323 million in 2013 and $1.137 million in 2014.

Then again, the Patriots may not care about the money. They’re making a strong statement that they have no use for Hernandez, which makes us wonder what the NFL and the Patriots have learned via their own investigations regarding the murder of Odin Lloyd and Hernandez’s behavior in its aftermath.

I hope they can still recoup the money... why should this slam the door?

28 NFL players have been arrested since the Superbowl? Wow! I did not know the league had this many idiots in it. Goddell is going to have a field day. AH can be their poster boy.

Young, hyper-aggressive men, full of a sense of entitlement, flush with more money than a human being can spend, and jacked with PEDs. What could go wrong?

IF it is murder, he's no worse than Rae Carruth.

I don't know. Wasn't Carruth the one who put out a hit on his pregnant wife/girlfriend and was driving in front of her and blocked her off so the hit man could kill her?

I know murder is murder and I'm no AH defender but that is worse IMO.

How can anyone question this decision like many morons on facebook? It's the right to do for a franchise with certain values. I'm extremely proud to be Patriots fan today.

thankfully now the pats wont have to deal with any of the ah fallout that will continue for a very long time. no questions no nothing. great move by the pats. :rocker: hopefully the pats can sort out the contract situation to their satisfaction.

The Patriots did the right thing today. This is bigger than a football game. Wouldn't want to root for a man like Hernandez.

#Proud to be Patriots fan today.

Obviously, I agree with the organization 100%. I am sick, just sick over this. WHAT A WASTE. I HOPE YOUR BUDDIES WERE WORTH IT, AARON. You have ruined your life and you have hurt my favorite team of all time. I hate you, I pity you and I will miss you on the field. Damn you!

So if he's innocent....a team gets a top 5 TE at age 23 for cheap?....

Ughhhh
Oh my I cannot believe that after this morning we are still seeing the "he's innocent!" crowd.

This is the difference between the Patriots and Ravens.

One cuts bait with a guy for going to trial for murder.

The other celebrates one as a hero and local legend.

I'll be keeping my eyes on the proshop. discounted jerseys are the best jerseys.

When AH's law firm signed that super defense lawyer yesterday, the one that got that shooter off. That is when I said uh oh!

AH wouldnt need that guy unless he was in deep doo doo.

Yup. And don't forget all the hugs from Goodell on that victory tour. Disgusting.

If I understand the idea of the forfeiture clause correctly, it's because the Patriots would have been "deprived of his services" while he was suspended as a result of being in jail.

By releasing him outright, they are saying "We don't want you," and therefore are willing to accept the cap hit.

Unfortunately for him he may have problems paying his super defense lawyer now.

They don't take a cap hit if he is cut, do they?

Good point. The Police only arrest guilty people.

In all seriousness, things look bad and the Pats were probably right just to walk away before it gets even uglier.

I think that's the extent of it but my response was to calling AH the stupidest athlete and biggest dirtbag ever (if he is charged with murder).

In degrees of biggest scumbag, Carruth would win hands down, IMO.
