The team is going to miss danny woodhead a lot - belichick completly blew it on DW.

You make it sound like they just lost 2005 version of Kevin Faulk.

Woody was a nice player and they will miss him in the dump-offs/screen aspect of the passing game but to state that they will miss him A LOT is a bit much. Rushing ave down 2 straight years. Longest rush 19yds.. Longest pass reception 25 yds (40 catches). Hes solid, but not an explosive player.

As evidenced by what exactly? A couple of receptions? What is it about this guy that has everyone convinced of his greatness? He's produced less than JR Redmond his first two years.

I think he can be an effective pass catcher in this offense, still not completely sold on his effectiveness as a runner.

I think you are being a bit too pessimistic.

Granted JR started out strong but Vereen is a much better player/prospect. Way more explosive. Faster. Stronger.

Vereen is an effective pass catcher now. Just needs more reps.

77 career carries does not a HoF career make but he runs with good balance, is elusive and runs pretty hard.

I'm not sure if they will miss him as much as the previous poster alluded to, but they will miss him a good bit. The guy was big in some huge games for us in his time here. I thought he would have been in the conversation amongst fans at the very least for Super Bowl MVP had we won the game. He came out and did his job and was very effective once he shook off the concussion he suffered against the LOLphins in Week 17 of 2010.

As for Vereen, he's shown flashes here and there. But I don't think he's shown nearly enough to call him "Woodhead on HGH". I'd love for him to prove me wrong but, at this point, that's where we're sitting.

No he hasn't, this is what I'm talking about. He's had one game in which he played very well and one catch in another inwhich he ran 80+ yards untouched in a straight line on a blown coverage. Nothing else all that special.

I disagree. I am not even counting that one play in my evaluation of Vereen, though it does show that he has excellent game speed. His end of game carries have been pretty consistently excellent. Teams know he is getting the ball and he still gets yards. He has been very impressive.

Agree completely. Woody was outstanding here.

Woodhead ran a 4.33 and 4.38 at the Combine. The interesting thing was, I never really saw that straight line speed from Woodhead, he always seemed to get chased down. Maybe he lost some speed from the knee injury he suffered while with the Jets.

That being said, I think he has better straight line speed than Vereen. I'm gonna miss Woodhead, I think the Pats will too. Since they carried two similar backs 2 seasons in a row (Woodhead and Vareen), maybe that's why they are looking at Jones. Though I don't think they will sign him. Though I wouldn't mind, he has excellent hands, and coming out of college he ran similar times to Woodhead's at the Combine.

We are definitely in agreement there. I tend to think that Bolden is extremely overrated by many here, and the selection of him to the 53 man roster last season may have been nothing more than a need for a bigger/bruiser RB.

If Jones is able to show something during his workout, then I'm all for adding more competition.

I agree as well, a lot of people love the "udfa feel good story." Bolden may very well be a dime a dozen rb. He had his moments but Ridley was just better imo. A lot of the running game is dependent on a great line(which we have). I'd like to see what Blount's got. He looked very good his rookie season. I'm interested to see what Felix can do if he's signed he was very explosive as times.

If Felix signs here, I will be highly pissed-off if the contract is more expensive than the one Woody signed in SD.

Seems unlikely, given that there's been no rush to sign him.

I couldn't imagine that would be the case on any level, Captain.

I think we'd all be pissed if Felix Jones was offered more money than Woodhead. For all we know, Jones may already be an afterthought in Belichick's mind at the moment.

Like I said, I'm all for any kind of extra competition, so I don't personally have a problem with bringing in Jones for a look--or even offering him something reasonable on the cheap to compete in camp etc, but I'd highly doubt that Felix Jones would see the kind of money that SD gave Woodhead.

I do not see why people would be angry if the Patriots decided that Felix Jones was worth more than Woodhead.

Because some fans fall in love with "our" players. They overlook the weaknesses and just see the positives. Woodhead was a good player for us. I hope he does well for his new team.

Some comments on the comments:

1. This was a awful lot of discussion on a player who might not even sign here. But if he did I'd be OK with it. He's a young guy who has a good ypc average and enough upside to risk bringing him in.

2. Competition is the crucible that brings out the best in players. To me BB is bringing in enough good players at RB, WR, DE that REAL competition will give us the best results when the season opens, as well as protecting us against the inevitable injuries that seem to plague us.

3. No one liked Danny Woodhead more than me. He is the testament to the need to scout small college talent as closely as the SEC. He was also a testament to the mantra "do your job", because by and large, that's what he did over his 3 years with the Pats, During that time he was a highly productive role player for this team. Thank you NY Jets.

That being said, he "was what he was" and that was a solid role player. If he ran a 4.3 at the combine, I never saw evidence of that elite speed here. He ran hard, but never seemed to make anyone miss. He had good hands, but never ran away from anyone. In short he wasn't an "explosive" player. Like we've seen flashes of, from Shane Vareen.

I wish him well in SD. I think he'll be a good signing for them in much the same role he had with the Pats, and he will probably be equally productive. He got a nice raise and he and his young family will live the next 3 years in a beautiful area of the country. I wish him well.

4. By letting him go the Pats are taking a small risk to hopefully upgrade his role with the likes of Vareen and possibly Jones. Woodhead's greatest asset was his reliability. Vareen and Jones might have more talent. If either becomes as "reliable", then the Pats will have upgraded. If they don't then it could be viewed as a mistake to let DW go, but not a hugh one, or even a big one.,

I guess a little competition won't hurt anything. I just hope we don't spend 5 spots on RB, a proven position on this team, while so many ?'s at DB/WR

Running backs get injured more than anyone. Having more than one backup is a good thing.

You wouldn't be angry if Felix freaking Jones' cap hit was more than 2.25 million dollars next season?

Not only are we talking about the position of RB which is generally a lower paying position, we're talking about a RB who would potentially be no higher than our RB3 or RB4.

If Felix Jones got a contract with a $2.25M cap hit, then Jones would be expected to competer for the #2 RB spot.

He could be a good Woodhead replacement. Probably a significant upgrade. Not durable enough to be a lead back, but has some very good skills to be a third down/change of pace back. He is quick and can catch the ball.

LOL, an upgrade to Woodhead? Dude can't get out of bed without tripping over something and injuring himself. I don't mind giving Felix a tryout but don't depend on him for anything beyond 'breather' minutes.
