Hype Pre-Draft Thread

They did draft Prince Amukamura a couple of years back in the first round. So it isn't a precedent for them to draft a DB in the first round. I do agree though that they believe in building in the trenches.

The draft is deeper in the back end than it is up front. That's why I expect the Giants to grab a pass rusher to pair with JPP in the first then concentrate on the back end day two. Anything is a possibility, though, and I'd love to see them pass up on Werner. But then I'd be concerned about the Jets taking him.

Why do the Giants always get all the good pass rushers, damnit!

Because they are inconsistent. One year they win the super bowl, the next year they suck and end up drafting in the top 20. That's how they ended up with JPP.

Actually, they are very consistent. The two years they won the Super Bowl, they were a mediocre regular season team. In 2011, they were lucky to make the playoffs facing declining teams down the stretch (they won their division with a 9-7 record).

The Giants are a very good playoff team. They are an average at best regular season team. Really doesn't matter if they win the Super Bowl or miss the playoffs all together. They are pretty consistent that way.

As I Cane it pains me to say this...but I would love for us to snag Werner. Love that guy. And who can deny how awesome it'd be to have a hulking German on each line?

That would be the Shizah! (spelling?) :D

Well, considering the front page has become the political forum and football news has died down, why not have a draft thread on the main forum one week before the event.

This is the second year in a row the Pats have gone into the draft with a massive hole (last year, safety), will we meet WR in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, not at all?

Who do you find more annoying, Kiper or McShay? Or do you just watch NFLN during the draft instead?

Who will be the next Jets bust at #9?

Discuss anything draft related to get our minds back on football and off these tragedies.

What do you all think of Margus Hunt? Seems like a real unique player. Campbell is the only other player I can think of that offers that type of height, but this guys seems to also offer Watt type athleticism.

Hayden, from talking to various execs, should go off the board 20-30 in the first round.

Mayock said on today's conference call that D.J. Hayden is now his top CB. Hayden is also @gregcosell's top CB, as he told me today.

Well, that was a crazy stock climb for him.

Top CB in the entire draft?!

For those that are interested, Mike Mayock is hosting his pre-draft conference call and it is available on NFL.com . It started at 1pm and is expected to run until 3pm. Great stuff!

They are also putting up highlight packages of players as questions come in and Mayock discusses certain prospects. HEAVENLY!

If the team selects a CB with their first pick, I might honestly put my fist through my TV.

If they take a CB in the 1st? Yes. If their first pick is in the second and is a corner then its another matter entirely.

I think the Pats are fairly set at CB. I can't see them drafting a CB high. If they draft a DB in the first, it would be safety.

Personally, I think if they draft a defender in the first, it will be a defensive lineman.

This Hayden rise is akin to Mayo's rise up the draft boards in 2008 (although with JM you could see why he was being talked up so much). I just don;t get it with Hayden.

So, anyway, here's what I would do if I was BB next Thursday.

Trade down out of round 1.

Someone will want a Quarterback. It's guaranteed. Geno Smith's stock is plummeting, he might be sat there at #29 and we could pick up at least a second a third.

Learn from past mistakes

That means both on and off the field. If we need a receiver, pick a damn receiver. If we need a pass rusher, pick one. Not going after those positions early and not having the quality on the field in those positions has cost us rings. Fact.

Speaking of receivers.....

We need at least one. Not in the sixth round or as a Free Agent either. We need quality, we need play-making ability - we need a true #1. A player who can make those sideline catches, who can beat press coverage, who can go up against the top corners. I'm sick of watching us get beat up on the LOS and then see Brady throw it 3 yards short of a first down because that's the only guy open.

They're called Safties for a reason.

McCourty has excelled at FS, A. Wilson should be a decent stop gap for a year or so, T. Wilson is progressing - but make sure we come out of the Draft with a viable alternative for the players listed above.

I'm not convinced the Patriots see a need at S, with the depth chart set as:

McCourty
Wilson
Wilson
Gregory
(Ebner?)

I think the Pats are fairly set at CB. I can't see them drafting a CB high.
And I expect a CB in round one. Maybe I'm just wrong but other than the possible return of Dowling we're exactly where we were in the AFCCG where one injury destroyed the whole defense. No depth at CB and one of the starters is on a one year deal.

I also don't see a Safety unless they plan to move McCourtey back to CB or are wanting to move on from T. Wilson or Gregory. Four safeties is plenty.

So you draft depth at a position in round 1? The Pats are going to draft a guy in round one to be the first guy off the bench where they could draft someone in round 1 who would be an every down player at another position?

I think the second that the Pats got Talib resigned and it was clear that Dennard was not going to miss any time because of jail time, CB plummeted as a team need.

If the Pats draft a DE, DT, or WR; that player has a realistic shot of being the starter. If they draft a CB, the player likely would be #4 on the depth chart.

We saw how the receiving corp (especially the TE position and in the red zone) got ordinary especially in the red zone with Gronk out in the AFCCG. Wouldn't that make receiver more important especially with Welker and Lloyd gone?

We've been reading about his rise for a couple weeks too:

Adam Caplan‏@caplannfl7m
Not b4 Austin, but over others, agreed. RT @LanceZierlein: Beginning to hear drums beating for Tennessee's Justin Hunter as the 1st WR.

Your point (as always) is valid. Although I will add that even a #4 CB can still get plenty of playing time. It's not a position like OL where a backup never plays barring injury.

I could see DE but I don't think Werner, Carradine or Jones gets to them and I'm not sure they'd take Hunt.

I don't have a great feel for the DT but there's none that I like the combination of talent and liklihood to make it to us.

Maybe Bill will finally take a first round WR but there's a legit question mark about every one of them - and lots of depth - so I expect to see a WR in the second round not the first.
