Interesting offseason cuts around the league thread

The only player on that list who's better than Vollmer (Clady) has already been franchised, and he's much weak in the run game than Vollmer. If the Patriots were the Vikings, Vollmer would be better for them than Clady.

What do you think of Markus Zusevics? Interesting prospect prior to combine injury?

The bottom line is that his statement that Vollmer was the best "LT/RT" on the market is incorrect. You may feel differently as obviously it's debatable.

I actually see the market being rather deep at OT, and there are certainly injury concerns with Vollmer.

I also don't like the fact that he gave up 6 sacks last season with Brady hiding the weakness in some of the OL by getting rid of the ball in under 2.5 seconds.

The added fact that he had a recent knee procedure also may be of concern, along with his chronic back issues. I agree with you that I'd like to see him re-signed, but obviously Belichick will have to make that call with the amt of money he deems appropriate. If we lose Vollmer I am not going to worry as much as some.

With Hix's unfortunate shoulder injuries equaling IR time in the past 2 seasons ending in his release last week, Zusevics should see more opportunity in moving up in the food chain here.

For all we know he may have been the favorite for that role anyway, but this should solidify his opportunity. Whether or not he can make the 53 man roster will be determined more by the end of the summer. I still think that they'll target a vet OT or two in free agency should Vollmer move on.

Early numbers on Bowe (not completely confirmed) - 5yrs, 50 million dollars. 24 million guaranteed.

So Welker shouldn't really break the bank.

That's big money for a guy who is consistently in the top ten in dropped pass rate at around 11.5% of catchable balls. The guaranteed money is low, so that is a good precedent for Welker's deal.

Why? Bowe didn't go to free agency. Welker can now do just that.

Vollmer is the best RT in the league.

The teams to worry about are looking for LT's - which Vollmer has proven he can play. The Pats can't play a RT with a bad back LT money if that's what Vollmer gets paid elsewhere.

For what it's worth, I do agree with you that he can play LT, and that he'll likely be in someone's plans as a LT. I just wouldn't entirely agree with the notion that we saw clear cut proof of that while he was here. I think it's open for much debate.

Either way, we're probably going to lose him, so we'll have to try and replace the RT with a combination of several moves:

One would be the continued development of Cannon as a potential replacement, although we should also consider the development of McDonald and Zusevics too. We have guys in the pipeline, so hopefully they can work out. Another move would be a free agent move to secure a veteran OT, possibly one who can play both LT/RT. The last move would be bringing in new blood through a possible mid to late rd draft pick and/or UDFA's.

We'll have to make do with those options because retaining Vollmer just probably doesn't offer any kind of good value at this point due to a couple of different circumstances.

I think the guaranteed money is actually 2 million higher than this initial early report. I believe that it's 26 million guaranteed. 20 immediately and 6 more down the road.

I don't think we see anything like that for Welker's guaranteed money though. I think he maxes out at around 18 or so, just my opinion.

There's many guys I'd rather have. No big deal.

At the same time it would have been great to be able to check Jackson out.

He's a young, durable, 6'4" powerful DE who went 3rd overall in the draft.

Those are exactly the kinds of guys who we need to be looking at because it would provide good value. That seems to be something that many are forgetting when looking out these free agents. It's not just about talent, there are plenty of talented NFL players who could never come here due to their cost. It's about assessing the player's talent in addition to the value and asking price.

I would guess that many of these free agents are immediately wiped off the list for one reason or another including scheme fit in our system, talent, work ethic, leadership, injury concerns, and most of all...value in their asking price.

If Jackson had been living up to his expectations as the 3rd overall pick, he'd have been asking for way too much money anyway, which would have immediately taken him out of consideration. Remember that Belichick couldn't even pull the trigger on a sure thing like Julius Peppers because he had a certain value set to him that he wouldn't go above, and he's one of the great defensive players in the NFL.

I believe Glover Quinn is going to be a FA, any interest?

Probably my favorite free agent safety fit, but I don't think they're going to spend money there.

You simply do not pay an injury prone RT who has been thoroughly average and at times beaten badly as a RT, LT money. You get a real LT.
This board overrates Volmer almost as much as the backup QB du jour.

Wow, look who turned blind homer on us.

why don't people think they will spend on CBs/DBs this year? We have cap space and is our biggest need next to WR. They need a impact player. And have to spend to get it. Anyone that wants an impact players has to spend and we have the $$

I see this year as the 07 of the DBs like it was the year for numerous big time WRs
