Do not like this maneuver!

+1.

Interesting: it appears that while the Pats chose an injured Tarpinian over a healthy Koutovides last year, they're making the reverse decision this year. . . .

1.) Cut big names

2.) Keep unkowns around longer

3.) Let news get out

4.) Laugh at fan angst

:D

I'm with you. But you know, we say this every year it seems, at draft time and at cut time, and yet the Patriots historically great football machine just continues to destroy people year after year. So even though much of it doesn't make sense to a lot of people, it works.

It's kinda crazy how we went from a surplus of established wide receivers, wondering who who be cut to what would seem to be a very limited WR corps and wondering who will make the team. I suppose if we just look at the generic "Receiver" though we're still in pretty good shape. I expect some big changes to the roster in this area by game 1 though.

Updated Potential Practice Squad:

Ebert
Kettani
Kopa/Weems
Silvestro
Tarpinian

Yes. Or at least, this is a potential scenario. From what I understand, the Pats are on the hook for a few million dollars for Branch and Gaffney, had they kept them anyway. If they cut them and then re-sign them after week 2, they get a huge discount. Taylor and Holley will make peanuts, and it's probably not going to be difficult to cut them. So they keep these kids, give them a little experience, shadow roster Branch and/or Gaffney, and then bring Branch and/or Gaffney back after week two.

Gives the kids a little chance to play for real, gives Gaffney time to heal up, saves the team a little chunk of money.

Possible? Sure. Plausible? Eh......who knows.

by the way... this is random, but I've been thinking it all day... Matt Blanchard for PS QB?

The 12 TE set is one step closer :rocker:

Using Pats Picker to look at the current roster after the reported cuts looks like this:

QB (2) Tom Brady, Ryan Mallett
RB (5) Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen, Danny Woodhead, Jeff Demps, Brandon Bolden
WR (6) Brandon Lloyd, Wes Welker, Julian Edelman, Matthew Slater, Tyler Urban, Kerry Taylor
TE (5) Rob Gronkowski, Aaron Hernandez, Daniel Fells, Jesse Holley, Visanthe Shiancoe
C (1) Ryan Wendell
G (6) Logan Mankins, Brian Waters, Dan Connolly, Donald Thomas, Nick McDonald, Dustin Waldron
T (3) Sebastian Vollmer, Nate Solder, Marcus Cannon
DE (5) Chandler Jones, Brandon Deaderick, Ron Brace, Trevor Scott, Jake Bequette
DT (5) Vince Wilfork, Kyle Love, Marcus Harrison, Marcus Forston, Justin Francis
ILB(6) Jerod Mayo, Donta Hightower, Brandon Spikes, Niko Koutouvides, Mike Rivera, Tracy White
OLB(3) Rob Ninkovich, Jermaine Cunningham, Bobby Carpenter
CB (8) Devin McCourty, Kyle Arrington, Ras-I Dowling, Marquice Cole, Alfonzo Dennard, Nate Ebner, Sterling Moore, Malcolm Williams
SS (1) Steve Gregory
FS (2) Patrick Chung, Tavon Wilson
ST (3) Stephen Gostkowski, Zoltan Mesko, Danny Aiken

Total players: 61
Created with Pats Picker: Pats Picker 2012

Need 8 cuts. My guess:

1 Bolden
2 Urban
3 Taylor
4 Waldron
5 Harrison
6 Forston
7 White
8 Sterling Moore or Malcolm Williams (cant decide which to keep)

Nope! Since the New England Patriots are down to two legitimate wide receivers (Welker and Lloyd) on the 53 man roster, the New England Patriots will adapt the "NY Jets pound and ground offensive philosophy" this year. Did you not watch the last preseason game?

Curran with an article about the QB situation, and he's not painting a pretty picture:

Mallett's not ready. Period. His decision-making, his accuracy, his tempo in and out of the huddle, his pocket-awareness, his confidence, it simply didn't show up in preseason. Not just the games but in the practices and the drills as well.

Mallett at backup means Pats are without a net

People should read it.

Bill Belichick is cutting as many wide receivers and quarterbacks from the roster as humanly possible.
