Shane Vereen - RB - Patriots

The Boston Herald suggests second-round RB Shane Vereen could in up on injured reserve once the season starts.
Vereen has only participated in a few full practices all preseason thanks to a hamstring injury. With the Patriots loaded at running back, the Herald suggests that Vereen could even end up with a "redshirt" year if he doesn't get back on the field soon. Since Vereen did participate in a few practices, he's not eligible for the regular season PUP list.

They should change the rule on players hurt in the preseason and make them PUP eligible.

If the injury will be resolved by the first 1/4 of the season then I don't see them putting him on IR, i think it's more likely they keep him on the roster and use him when healthy. If it's going to run to midseason then they IR him. They are deep enough right now and can put him on the roster and go with Green-Ellis, Woodhead, Ridley, and Morris with Faulk on PUP. Morris can be waived when Faulk returns. If they IR Vereen and PUP Faulk they will need to pick up a cut for depth, that shouldn't be a problem as about 1,500 players are about to be cut.

Ugh. Ya can't make the club from the tub.

Has any rookie under BB gone on IR in his first year and even made it onto the final roster in his second year?

i dont know how you surmise that it is "likely" he will be placed on IR. i think reiss is wrong on that one, unless its a very severe hamstring strain/sprain or tear

Tate was on PUP to start his rookie year, played in one game and then went to IR.

Ben Watson, Tate and Wheatley are the only ones that come to mind.

I wouldn't mind keeping a few talented, slightly injured young players on the 53 man roster--It would be nice to get some very talented if raw midseason reinforcements/injury replacements rather than having to pick up street free agents.

Would think Medlin gets in before Morris no?

There is no news on him. That's the way it goes here. Posting what some media site speculates is just a waste of time. They have no idea what will happen. There are still three weeks before the season starts. It's highly unlikely they will IR a 3rd round RB out of the gate. Belichick hinted weeks ago that none of the guys missing practice were seriously injured. They could be back any time. He's most likely dealing with some level of strain or a hammy. No sense rushing him back just to placate the curious...

+1

It says the herald "suggests" that he "could"

That doens't = likely too me.

Couldn't you really make this bit of speculation apply to anyone who hasn't practiced with the team lately?

Not only is it pure speculation but is also speculation based on a false premise--that the Pats are "loaded" at RB. BJGE, Woody, and Ridley are certainly capable backs, but if one of them goes down you're looking at heavy reps for Morris, Faulk, or Medlin. That's hardly being loaded IMO.

it is speculation. The dude has missed tons of time... I don't think for a RB TC time is crucial vs other positions

He's already missed 2 weeks of a short, accelerated training camp. He's so far behind, is it worth it to get him on the field ? Right now, he's probably fifth on the depth chart anyway. I hope and think they will do the same thing they did with Price last year, he'll see meaningless minutes towards the end of the season. Hopefully I'm wrong, he really is a fantastic weapon, and besides Woodhead, gives us the only change of pace and speed we would have had.

I don't want to IR him. I want that talent as part of our weaponry THIS year.

Shawn 'unable' Crable?

No, the conclusion does NOT apply to all who haven't practiced lately. Veterans are in a very different situation, especially those who have played for us in the past.

However, Dowling is in a similar position. Rookies who have no minicamp and only a couple of practices cannot be expected to be very usful during the season. We'll see if Varrne and Dowling can return before the season starts.
