Return of the 10 yard cushion...

Let's do this, it's real simple, please answer if you could, and can you be honest. Blue Koolaid aside now :)

OK

Question 1:

Do you feel as of right now, that Jerod Mayo is playing up to the standards of being the 10th overall selection ? If so, then why, what have you seen to justify your response ?

Question 2:

Across the country, if you had to bet, (not just here in homerville), would more people think (as of right now) that DRC is a better football player than Jerod May ? If so, then why?

Watch the videos, then I'll answer your questions.

Did DRC win DROY? Was DRC fighting a knee injury all season long last year? I didn't think so. Mayo was the best defensive player out of the draft his rookie year. He wasn't healthy last year. I'm not really sure what's so hard to comprehend here.

Oh boy, can we please drop the Mayo is not healthy excuse ? Or is that something that will be used going forward. It's been almost an entire year since he had dinged his knee. Let's safely assume that as of right now, Jerod is healthy. Now re-answer my questions please if you could ? Yikes !

Reading problems? Jerod was the best defensive player from the 08 draft in the year of 2008. Which means he was better than DRC. And every other rookie. In the year of 2009, he got injured, which hampered his performance.

U-N-D-E-R-S-T-A-N-D?

And as for your other question, I'd be willing to bet most people around the country would rather have DRC than Mayo because, like you appear to be, they are clueless about the basics of the game and rely on Pro Bowls to justify their opinions.

If Jerod has a bad year this year, which we have no reason to believe will happen, since, again, he was the best defensive player from the 08 draft in his rookie year, then we can safely assume that he was not worth the 10th overall pick. But again, not sure what would lead you to make that prediction since all indications say otherwise.

Nothing like a couple of loaded questions...

Considering the responsibilities that Mayo has in this defense, I think he's done a fine job for where he was selected. If I have to explain the responsibilities of ILB's in our defense to you, then you've shown yourself as well as everyone else just why you hold this flawed opinion.

Does it really matter? The majority has shown their ignorance time and time again on matters pertaining to sports as well as outside of sports. Being a Pats fan, with Spygate, you should know this. But since you're looking for an answer, I'd say people would go with Mayo. Not sure what you see in DRC, but he really hasn't done anything special. Hell, I wouldn't even put him in the top five of CB's in the league.

Have you watched Jerod over the last 3 preseason games ? I have watched him very closely, even twice on DVR as I rewatch the games.

I am alarmed at what I am seeing, if you have DVR'd the games look back and give me your thoughts. He is not making plays, engulfed by guards and getting consistently abused in pass coverage.

We need to see more, that is really all I'm saying, I just like to call it like I see it. I don't hate the Pats, I love the Pats, I am just giving my honest opinion, not my homered opinion. Please re-watch any of these last 3 games and give me your thoughts. I think alot more is demanded from the investment that was made in the 10th overall pick.

Mayo is on the verge of being a disappointment. You expect more from a top ten pick.

Christ on a crutch. He won DRoY his rookie year, was injured last season, and this season hasn't even started yet.

People need to seriously cut down on the glue consumption.

If you think the problem last night was the CB cushion, you need to stop following football immediately. Walk away and never watch another snap.

There were other issues that added to the awful performance our defense showed last night. But the thread is about the 10 yard cushion...

If you think the 10 yard cushion is a good way to defend the pass in today's NFL, then I suggest you watch games more closely.

If the tackling is solid, then the 10 yard cushion is a good thing. If the tackling sucks, then it's a bad thing. Last night, the latter happened.

I'm sure Belichick has noticed the rule changes. I'm not trying to be snide, but you make it sound like someone needs to alert Belichick that the rules have changed.

Naw, I'm sure BB has his reasons for why they do things the way we do. This is just one of the things he does that frustrates some fans.

If it's 3rd and 5 and you give a 10 yard cushion, it won't matter if you tackle right away or not, you're giving up the first down. How often did teams continue their drives last year because of that? More times than I can remember. Henne and Orton feasted on us and they're not elite. I can understand if it's Manning or Brees, but unproven QBs like Bradford? Which goes back to my original question: Why did we play tight like we did against the Saints and Falcons, both teams with proven QBs and receivers, but play soft against Bradford and his WRs?

Are you saying that the team consistently gives 10 yard cushions on 3rd and 5 in the regular season?

Interesting for you to say that, neither does anyone else!

Who would you take right now if given the choice Mr. Homer ? Tell me !

Given the choice of what? Of taking Mayo over DRC? I would do it 11 times out of 10.

I no longer think it is glue.. I think it may be petrol, which is far more devastating when sniffed. That being said, I am volunteering an awareness campaign:

No. But we did it enough last year to be noticeable.

Wow, "Blue Koolaid" has a really high alcohol content........yikes !!!!!!! I never would have guessed

You can see a doctor for this tunnel vision you know, I recommend it highly, you'll be a better, more objective person for it.

So every player that has had a sensational rookie year is bound to stay great?....What planet are you on?

Theres been MANY a player who was a one year wonder in this league....not saying Mayo is one of them but its far from impossible that maybe, just maybe his rookie year can be attributed to playing aside and being on the field with one of the best ILBs in Pats history - Bruschi

I can remember how we thought Wilson when he was a young player on how good he looked side by side with Harrison..until Harrison went down with injury and Wilson was never the same without him.

You really would take Mayo over DRC? In today's pass crazy NFL? The same Mayo who can't cover TEs or RBs? Really?

Interesting.

Okay, I'm trying to put it in perspective here, who do you feel is a better linebacker up to this point in their respective careers: Ted Johnson or Mayo?

That's why I'm reluctant to argue sometimes. Mayo doesn't cover TE's, he's been playing WEAKSIDE.
