The Official Patriots Draft (Day 1) thread

I think I'd have a little more patience if not for the fact that the Pats have steadfastly refused to address the pass rush for 4+ years now (spending one draft pick in the top 3 rounds doesn't count). If I was confident that they were going to address it tomorrow, I'd be a whole lot less on edge, but pass rush isn't any more necessary this year than it was last year: it was a critical need then too. Maybe the talent just wasn't there last year... or the year before, but we can't really assume that it'll be taken care of, which is lame.

What the hell? I don't know how you can say this with a straight face. When have we ever picked a good pass rusher?

Wrong use of words. Willie McGinest?

Look at what's left in the draft and gain some perspective.

What about those who say a first round pick should be a 3 down player?

Seeing that the Pats D played in the nickle and dime 54% of the time last year, he will.

According to stats and scouting reports, yes.

If hes already a known shutdown corner in the NFL he should of been a top 5 pick, not 27.

Many scouting reports say he's not a shut down corner. Are you predicting he's a day one starter?

They really need to ban the term "shutdown corner." There are exactly 2 of those in the league. It is doubtful Mccourty or anyone picked today is #3.

He seems like a good prospect who can cover and is a willing tackler. The ST is a bonus. There seems to be knocks on his playmaking/ball skills which go with making so few picks in his college career.

I have no idea if he'll work out but I'd say it is about 99.99% likely he isn't a shutdown corner.

I know Bill Belichick's got good info on McCourty, because of his close relationship with Greg Schiano.

Nothing against you Devin, but ... - Extra Points - Boston.com (Breer's meltdown lol) but obviously BB knew what he was getting and he also knows what we need.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if he doesn't even draft a pass rusher tomorrow. If that's the case some of you had better pick your ledge spot now before the rush.

That's what I'm saying. Quality picks in the 2nd make me feel MUCH better about selecting a CB (albeit one that supposed to be really good) in the first round. As of right now, I'm drinking. This just seems like a gamble to me but we shall see. A true shutdown corner would open up a lot for this defense (ala Revis with the Jets). Hopefully tomorrow yields great results.

Hey, I'm drinking, too, since tomorrow is casual Friday. Cheers!

I agree, but who are the second round prospects that are likely to be there?

No, I'm saying he has as much potential to be a shutdown corner as nearly anyone else. And I'm saying that people need to stop crying.

Not that it helps any but the Saints also picked another CB and they are already stocked deep in the backfield. Wonder if the Saints boards are going bonkers as well.

Amen to that. That guy still thinks Shawn Crable is the second coming of Willie McGinest!

He has the physical tools to be a shutdown corner. That's at least one start. One upside to him is it's hard to get leverage on him (break clean).

Although dhamz is right about the "shutdown corner" thing. We need to stop using it when we mean "a really good cover guy."

Still plenty of good players left to help the pass rush and the run defense.

So why didn't we pick one of them with our first round pick since our biggest need were OLB or DE?

You guys are mental midgets. Have fun in school tomorrow.

I don't know but if the Pats had won the super Bowl last year nobody would really care. And the Saints were weak at corner last year or at lease had minimal depth and brought some guys in mid-season who played well but who probably don't have much left. The Saints can afford to draft for depth.

Because they're still available and we pick all day tomorrow?

Corey Wootton is a good looking prospect, but he's going to have to add some weight to that frame of his.
